  1. “Y-Yeah, totally,” Shane replied. “D-Do you uh– do you know who that kid with Rozanov is?”

Scott laughed a little, tilting his head in confusion.

“Probably Rozanov’s kid,” he informed Shane, causing his brain to stall completely.

“You didn’t hear?” Scott asked, and Shane blinked, trying to reboot his mind from the crash that Scott had just caused. “It’s why he took time off,” Hunter informed him. “Found out he had a kid, I guess. Or something like that, I didn’t really get the details.”

Of all the reasons he’d thought of for Ilya disappearing for the past month, this had never crossed his mind. A million different thoughts raced through Shane’s mind. How the hell was Ilya a dad, and why hadn’t he told Shane and how the fuck did Scott Hunter of all people find out before him and—

And what the fuck was Shane supposed to do now?

After the tuna melt situation, Ilya suddenly disappears from hockey for six weeks, claiming some sort of family emergency. Shane showed up to the All-Star game ready to try and fix things, only to be shocked to find a little girl at Ilya's side with remarkably familiar blue eyes.

  2. "We're setting you up with a billet situation," Fletcher continued. "It's pretty common for first-year players, especially international guys. Gives you a chance to settle in, learn the city, have someone looking out for you."

"Okay," Ilya said slowly, not entirely sure what a billet was, but not wanting to admit his ignorance.

He could guess from the context – he’d heard of rookies being assigned to live with older single players, veterans who could show them the ropes. Maybe that was what Fletcher meant. Connors maybe, he was probably a handful of years older than Ilya. Or perhaps Becker. Ilya just hoped it was someone who–

"You'll be staying with Nikolai Petrov and his family."

The words hit Ilya like a punch to the gut. For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

"Petrov?" he managed, his voice coming out strangled.

The Bears decide that Ilya should be set up with a billet for his first season. The idea of spending a year living with a man that Ilya is sure hates him is completely terrifying. And yet, it ends up being the best thing to ever happen to him.

  3. Ilya would have been more peeved at how crowded the place was, if not for the sight before him. He leaned on the thick black matted flooring of the boxing ring, half hiding his face in the hopes no one would clock the hungry look on his face as a shirtless Ryan Price and extremely fit-looking Shane Hollander taped down their gloves. 4. “Hello,” Ilya repeats, still kind of stuck on those freckles.

    “Hi?” the man says.

    “Hi,” Ilya says—again.

Oh god, he's said hello three times now. He should literally say anything else. His name, probably. His phone number, preferably.

“Hi,” Ilya says again, because he can’t help it. “I am—”

“Are you Nick?” the man asks, and it comes out as a breathless sound.

  9. “You handled it well. You flunked a bit the questions we had prepared, but you did well.”
“Flunked?” Shane asked, voice pitching up as the words salted over the open wound, the infected gutting from the top of his throat down to his stomach.
“You should have rectified and make your position clear about Scott Hunter. We don’t want you to sound like you’re antagonizing him,” Yuna added, matter-of-factly, her eyes narrowing on the knot of his tie, adjusting it like it still mattered.

Shane’s body shook violently against his will, dislodging from under her touch. Yuna looked up, surprised by his reaction.
Surprise that shifted to horror immediately.

“No, that’s not what I meant–”
“I need to–” he gasped, bringing a hand to cover his mouth, while Yuna tried to grab his arm. Any other time, he could have avoided her, but Shane was falling.

  10. It's already so complicated - their hook-ups and their secrets - that Ilya Rozanov knows it can't continue forever. So, when Shane Hollander, his rival on the ice and current reason for waking up in the morning, suddenly ghosts him and starts playing like an amateur, Ilya is desperate to figure out why and fix it so that their tangled little mess can maybe, one day, last.

When Shane pulls away, he swallows audibly and the breath catches in his throat when he says, “There’s something you should know, too. Um, before.”
Ilya traces a thumb over his lips, pouts his own to show he’s listening. “Hm?”
“I’m a man,” Shane says, carefully.
    Ilya scoffs. “Obviously. I’m not—”
“No, no, I mean—I’m a man. You need to remember that. Because—”
“Oh,” Ilya murmurs. He brings his other hand up, settles it in the curve of Shane’s neck. “I understand."

  12. Ilya has been thinking about his mother again. Not that he ever really stops but lately...Yes, lately he is thinking about Irina Rozanova but also about Irina Sokolova. About Irina before Alexei or Ilya. Before Grigori Rozanov. Irina Sokolova - the champion figure skater. The world championship title she won. The routine she developed and agonised over and perfected but never took to the Olympics.

And he has been doing something stupid. Something he absolutely should not be doing. But he is one year away from reaching an age his mother never got to see and he needs...something. He’s pretty sure it’s this particular something.

But Dr. Galina has been implying that perhaps it is only stupid in the way that falling in love with your arch-rival is stupid. So maybe he should just give up already and get on with it.

“Just talk,” Ilya begs, not even caring how pathetic he sounds. “Please.”

“Okay, okay,” Hollander breathes. “You know. I keep thinking. This isn’t right. There’s something fucking wrong.”

“Of course there’s something wrong, Hollander! Your building is on fire!”

    “I fucking know, Rozanov!”

  16. Ilya widens his eyes, moves his hands in an impatient “get on with it” motion. He has the urge to say it for him, end both their misery. Shane blinks rapidly a few times, takes another deep breath. “I want to stop,” he says simply.

Ilya lets out one humorless laugh, “Stop what?”

Shane ignores him. “At the All Star Game, I told you I liked you. And you said about Russia and your family. And I looked some things up. I get it. I get it better now. I know we can’t but I can’t stop wanting to be…more. Unless we stop.”

  17. ~And from your lips, he drew the Hallelujah

Ilya Rozanov leaves Boston and signs with Ottawa, trying to fight a slow slide into emptiness and find meaning in his life again. Shane Hollander is a lonely, struggling artist who lost his spark. When they meet by chance, they both have to decide what's worth living for.

Or…Shane never gets the chance to become a pro hockey player, so they meet later in life. Basically, they’re both sad boys, but the healing will be worth it (mostly soft fluff, very low angst). More baggage, fewer hangups.

~You see I used to live alone before I knew ya.

    ——————————————————

“So maybe we would have played together,” Ilya said.

“Yeah. Maybe we would have been rivals,” Shane said, and that got a grin out of him. He couldn’t quite imagine it, but he thought that would have been fun, facing off against Ilya Rozanov. In another life.

Ilya nodded slowly. “And yet here we are, meeting anyway. Maybe we were meant to.”

  18. “But we have always kissed, we -”

“I know.” Shane says, face blushing crimson. “But like I said, I don’t want to do that anymore. We can still see each other, because I like what we do, but we have to keep that part out of it. Please.”

Ilya breathes in and out. He tries to be rational. Shane’s requesting that something change in their arrangement. It should be a simple answer. Yes. Of course. If that’s a boundary he wants to set, then Ilya should obey it.

But the feeling of loss is so overwhelming he can barely stomach it.

or, after Vegas, Shane doesn't let Ilya kiss him anymore when they hook up. Ilya doesn't take it very well.

  19. In another life — or maybe the next one, or maybe the one before — Ilya Rozanov learns that some roads only lead to one place. No matter how you take them, the wolves are always waiting at the end.

Maybe that's why, in December 2008, Ilya wakes up with the distinct, inexplicable sense, that he has already lived this life before.

Some things, it turns out, are inevitable. The question is whether he is.

Lately, playing hockey wasn't even as much fun as it used to be. Games were always the highlight, but even that, it didn’t feel as good since his team had been falling apart.

And all that because he came out as gay.

He didn’t really fault them for taking some time to accept it, so Shane let them talk. If that helped them digest the news, so be it.
He let them distance themselves from him, let them gossip around to other teams, let them make him the butt of jokes he didn’t understand.

Shane didn’t mind, all things considered.

    Everything was fine.
