Shane almost misses the stench of a cigarette beside him after sex.
Shane has never smoked a cigarette in his life, but right now he’s craving the smell. Craving the specific ones Ilya smokes. It’s pathetic.
Shane is sitting up against his headboard, but he’s not alone in bed. Miles, Rose’s actor friend, lays next to him, eyes closed as he relaxes in the afterglow. For some reason, Shane doesn’t feel much of an afterglow himself.
After Rose breaks up with Shane, he sleeps with Miles, but all he can think about afterwards is Ilya.

“That man has a boyfriend,” Rose says, certain.
“He does,” Rae agrees easily, their voice equally certain.
“He’s never gonna tell me who it is,” Rose says.
“Definitely not,” they agree.
“I’m gonna figure it out,” Rose says.
Rae doesn’t comment on that, just dips their sponge back into the blue paint. Silently begins to layer it over the back of Rose’s hand, carefully dabbing to make sure that it fills the creases of her knuckles, the dips between each finger.
It’s impressive, really, how much doubt Rae manages to communicate though the gentle press of a sponge.
Whatever. Rose figured out Shane’s sexuality before he did. It shouldn’t be that much more difficult for her to figure out who his boyfriend was. She does have excellent gaydar after all. Though she really wishes it would more frequently kick in before she started sleeping with yet another gay man.
Or, Shane Hollander has a boyfriend. Rose is going to find out who it is, one way or another.

It starts with Shane running out of Ilya’s apartment after one too‑intimate moment over a tuna melt. He tries to bury it by dating Rose Landry, but the Montreal club night blows everything open jealousy, staring, avoidance, all of it. Rose eventually breaks up with him gently, seeing the truth he can’t say out loud. At the All‑Star Game, things shift from canon. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. Something cracks open. He thinks of Shane. He texts him. Does Shane remember the invitation? And does Ilya go?
