Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, star players and fiancés of the Ottawa Centaurs, have shared both love and triumph on and off the ice, including two Stanley Cup victories. But when a devastating hit leaves Shane with partial amnesia, he forgets only Ilya—the man he once loved and imagined a future with. The world knows them as Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander—superstars, champions, captains. Ottawa’s golden boys. Two men who changed the shape of a franchise and, without ever meaning to, shifted the culture of the league simply by loving each other openly. They play on the Ottawa Centaurs, share a line, share a home, share a future. Their engagement had broken the internet for a solid forty-eight hours—rings flashing during warmups, a quiet kiss caught by a long lens, Shane’s hand resting so naturally at Ilya’s back it felt like it had always belonged there. There are haters. There always are. But they are drowned out by the roar of fans who chant their names together, by teammates who treat their relationship as the most normal thing in the world, by families who sit side by side in the stands wearing matching jerseys. Together, they have won two Stanley Cups. Together, they have bled for this sport. And together, they understand the risk. Hockey is fast. Hockey is violent. Hockey does not care who you love. They’ve always known that. Ilya learned it first in April of 2014. Back then, Shane was playing against Boston. A hard hit—late, ugly, the kind that makes the arena go silent before anyone even realizes why. Shane went down wrong, helmet snapping back, body going slack as he hit the ice. Ilya had been on the bench. He remembers standing up too fast. The way his vision tunneled. The way his heart stopped beating—not metaphorically, not poetically, but truly, painfully still—as Shane didn’t move. He remembers gripping the boards so hard his knuckles went white. Remembered screaming Shane’s name without realizing he was doing it. Remembered the medical staff swarming, remembered the stretcher, remembered not breathing again until he saw Shane’s chest rise in the tunnel. After that, every hit carried a ghost. Every time Shane stayed down a second too long, Ilya felt 2014 claw its way up his spine. They talked about it, quietly, late at night. About the risks. About concussions and broken bones and the way the game takes pieces of you and never gives them back. They promised each other honesty. They promised each other presence. They promised that no matter what—no matter the cameras, the league, the rules—they would choose each other first. That promise is tested again in 2017. It happens fast. Too fast. The puck is dumped deep, Shane chasing hard, skates digging in. There’s a collision near the boards—shoulder to shoulder, brutal but clean—and then something goes wrong. Shane’s edge catches. His head snaps back. He goes down. And this time… he doesn’t move. The arena goes deathly quiet in that way every hockey fan recognizes instantly. No cheering. No booing. Just the sharp scrape of skates slowing, players looking around, realizing something is wrong. Ilya sees it from center ice. Sees Shane’s body twisted unnaturally. Sees his stick slip from his fingers. Sees the stillness. The past slams into him like a freight train. But this time— This time Ilya doesn’t freeze. He doesn’t stay back. He doesn’t wait for officials. He doesn’t care about protocol or penalties or the watching eyes of thousands of fans and millions more at home. His fiancé is unmoving. Ilya drops his gloves and sprints. “ILYA—!” someone shouts, maybe a ref, maybe a teammate. He doesn’t hear it. He drops to his knees beside Shane, hands shaking as he cups his helmeted face. “Shane. Shane—hey, love, look at me. Please. Please.” His voice cracks on the last word.

“What are these?” Yuna hears Ilya ask. He’s standing with his back to her in front of the armoire next to the couch, looking up at the shelves. She’d been on her way back into the living room with after-dinner coffee when she’d paused at the threshold. Shane steps toward the armoire, coming up behind Ilya and curling both arms around his waist. “Um, trophies from when I was a kid. Like, minor hockey leagues and tournaments and stuff.” Ilya moves his head from left to right slowly, scanning the array of trophies and medals on the shelf. “Is big business? Making meaningless awards for tiny hockey players?” “They aren’t meaningless,” Shane protests, but he sounds a little sheepish. “Yes, I’m sure the…” Ilya leans in close to read the plaque on one trophy, “‘Sportsmanship Award’ for the U7 Snowflake Classic was very prestigious.” Shane rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing. “They don’t have awards like this in Russia?” Or: Yuna bonds with Ilya, one plastic trophy at a time.

Ilya knows that, between him and Shane, he's the more affectionate of the two. He's not sure if it's because he's from Europe, where everyone greets each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, or if it's because he grew up so starved for love and affection that he can't do anything except show Shane how much he loves him at any chance that he has. So, yes, he knows that he's the one most likely to kiss Shane on the cheek when he skates by him at practice or come up behind Shane when he's cooking dinner just to wrap his arms around him or fall on top of Shane while he's reading on the couch, desperate to have his skin touching Shane's. But, Shane… Shane loves Ilya differently. It's quieter. More intentional. — Or, five times that Shane loved Ilya in his quiet way, and one time that he loved Ilya loudly.

5 times Yuna Hollander thought Ilya Rosanov’s mom should be with him, and one time she and Ilya agreed Winter 2008 Yuna had been listening to Shane talk about this Ilya Rosanov kid for weeks. Every day after hockey practice, he had film review to prep for the World Juniors, and every night at the dinner table, he'd tell his parents about another play he saw by this Russian phenom, his eyes bright. He'd been quieter about hockey after he was named to Canada’s junior international team - Yuna worried maybe it was too much. He's just a kid, sports should still be fun, they shouldn't be this intense yet. But seeing how animated he was explaining to David how he'd replicated a backhand shot of Rosanov's that he'd overheard a scout raving about, Yuna felt confident this was the path her son wanted for himself. She'd support him no matter what. The week ahead of their flight from Ottawa to Regina for the tournament had been a flurry of logistics. She had to make sure Shane packed all of his favorite equipment and clothes and backups of each, even though Team Canada was also providing uniforms and gear when they arrived. Shane was a ball of nervous energy on the plane, but now that they approach the arena, Yuna sees him almost bursting with excitement. His cheeks were flush in the cold, the sun highlighted his freckles, and his smile beamed toward her. He'd been taller than Yuna for a couple years now and was still growing. People treated him like an adult, expected him to make decisions about his future, but to her, he was still her little boy. Yuna stops at the door to the arena as Shane notices someone down the alleyway. "Mom, I think that's Ilya Rosanov - I'm just going to go over and say hi, I'll be right back." She follows her son's line of sight toward the kid in the distance smoking and sighs. She’d heard the Russian delegation sends over all these boys with coaches, but no parents. They'd be better behaved if their mothers were here, she's sure. But she knows Shane is excited to meet the only boy people say might actually be faster than he is. They are going to be in the same draft class, might even play in the NHL together one day if this all continues. Coaches and scouts are already been trying to pit them against one another. But they're both just kids, and it’d be nicer for Shane to have a friend. "Okay, honey, I'll just be inside with the other parents." When Shane finds her again in the bleachers of the arena, he's making the face Yuna knows means he was in his head about something. "How'd it go?" "Oh, uh, fine. He said he was going to beat us." That's all he says, but he looks flatter than he did outside. Deflated, maybe. For Shane’s whole mood to shift, Yuna thinks that kid really must've been an asshole. Well, so much for the plan where they're friends instead of rivals. Summer 2009 Yuna has to be honest: she’s glad her son was the second overall draft pick. First would’ve been exciting, and obviously historic, but she’s overjoyed that Shane went to a Canadian team instead of Boston. She just wishes first hadn’t been Rosanov. He was so cocky, holding up the stupid #1 in photos. As they speak with Shane’s new coach at the after party, she knows she's being too effusive about her love of the Metros, but she's just so relieved it all worked out. She'd been on edge for months with all the anticipation for the draft. Even yesterday, she was up all night trying not to wake David, worried it wasn’t the right choice, letting Shane pursue hockey without going to college first. He could’ve had more time to grow before joining the league, while getting a degree as a backup plan. But all of the experts they’d talked to said with his skill level, this would be the best route, with the most impact on the game and the most benefit for Shane. Shane is so talented, and he loves hockey, and she just wants him to be happy. Yuna excuses herself from the conversation to go to the bathroom. Crossing across the ballroom, she sees Rosanov standing with an intense man in a uniform who must be his father and the Boston Raiders' coach. His mom must’ve not wanted to make the trip from Russia, Yuna thinks to herself. She knows it’s far, but she can’t imagine not being next to Shane for this moment. When she's crossing back toward her family, she notices the Rosanovs again. Ilya looks quieter than he did earlier at the post-draft photo opportunity. And younger, standing next to his father. She watches as a scowl come across his face in response to something his father says, and then sees him glance over to where Shane and David are standing. They must be talking about beating Montreal this season. She hopes Shane beats him for rookie of the year. That’ll show them. Summer 2014 “David, how are you so chill about this? Rosanov looked right at Shane when he held up that MVP trophy. I swear, he smirked. The constant interview chirps are one thing, but openly taunting him in a room filled with basically every player and coach in the league?” Yuna paces across their bedroom, vaguely getting ready for bed but too wired hating Ilya Rosanov to commit to it.

As he kept gazing at Ilya, he suddenly felt like his pants had gotten weirdly uncomfortable. Like they were suddenly too tight. He glanced down at himself and felt like his heart was about to jump out of his chest when he noticed the bulge on him. What on earth was that? He stared down at himself for a moment, in shock. Then, he decided he would try to push it down; maybe that would help. He startled even more when his own action made him let out an undignified, weird sound. Like a groan, but not really. Why had that felt so good? He just stared at himself for another moment, horrified. He tried it again. He had no idea what he was doing, but it felt wrong. Like, he shouldn’t do something that made him react like that. He glanced up, realising he was still very inappropriately watching the naked priest, and exhaled when he hadn’t been spotted yet. ⋆ ˚。 ⋆୨♡୧⋆ ˚。 ⋆ OR Shane has led a sheltered life with his family, growing up deeply religious in a small village somewhere in medieval Europe. His quiet world is disturbed when a new priest takes over the town's church. OR Shane is really fucking gay, and he has no idea that it is even an option. ⋆ ˚。 ⋆୨♡୧⋆ ˚。 ⋆

"He seems to understand immediately what's going on, because he turns Ilya towards him, even though he's considerably taller and has much more body mass than David. No matter how big a child grows, to their parents they will always remain a child. This has to be a nightmare. Ilya is convinced it must be. Because there is no way that what he’s watching happen is real life. The SUV ahead of him, the one that is carrying Shane, is swerving out of control, having hit a patch of black ice. The driver in Ilya’s vehicle has already hit the brakes, their SUV skidding to a stop. But the one in front of them is still going. And then Ilya can’t do anything but watch as it suddenly flips. Once, twice, a third time before it drags across the road, still upside down. Finally, it comes to a stop. The Centaurs end up in a car accident on a snowy drive.

"Sorry. Just realized something just now.," Ilya laughs. "What?" "Loons," Ilya says and laughs again. "Loons?" Yuna repeats confused. "When I went to the cottage last summer Shane made fun of me because I never heard the loon call before. I was so scared. I called it stupid canadian wolf bird," Yuna lets out a little laugh, Ilya continues - "I just realized that these ducks on my baby blanket, they look like..." "Loons," Yuna finishes with smile tugging on her lips. "Yes. Loons. Shane will make fun of me," Ilya groans but not maliciously. He takes the blanket out of Yuna's hands and brings it to his face, trying to see if it still smells like home, like his mom. But the smell was gone and his heart lurches. (...) "Tell me the stories. A few days before Shane’s seventeenth birthday, he told his parents he’d broken up with Elise. “It just didn’t work out,” Shane said, not really looking at either of them; instead, he was staring at the TV, obviously not really watching the hockey game he’d put on. There was a faint rosy tint to his cheeks. Or: in which Yuna and David try to figure out what's going on with their son through the years while trying to be good, supportive, non-overbearing parents.
