Shane and Ilya had mutually agreed to keep their whatever-they’re-doing out of Sochi. It was an easy decision to make: this was bigger than any MLH rivalry and definitely bigger than a few hotel hook-ups. There was no room for distractions, not with Olympic gold on the line. So it’d be really fucking great if their daemons could get on the same page and stop trying to cause an international fucking incident.

  2. Raised as the Yakuza's Wakagashira, Shane Hollander only knows discipline. The Bratva Pakhan's son, Ilya Rozanov, has only ever been feared. In the criminal underworld, love is leverage, and survival means knowing when to hide the truth and when to pull the trigger. A mafia AU about their forbidden romance, rivalry, violence, and what it means to choose each other in spite of it all. Enemies by design. Lovers by choice. -prev. titled “The Yakuza Enforcer and the Bratva Prince”-

  5. Ilya Rozanov has been saying I love you into the void his whole life.

To his mother’s cold hands at twelve, making promises she can’t hear. To his teammates through fist bumps in tunnel rituals that cost nothing because they ask for nothing. To a sleeping man, in Russian, because his native language is the only container safe enough for what he actually feels. To a country he is slowly losing the ability to love back.

He keeps saying it. No one says it back.

    Until they do.

Finding your soulmate is supposed to be beautiful. You stand in front of someone and you say their full name; they say yours. Your soulmarks appear somewhere on your bodies, and it's supposed to be beautiful. Life-changing.

It's not supposed to happen a week before the World Juniors tournament in a dirty Saskatchewan parking lot. It's not supposed to be Canada's newest darling hockey player and your future rival who whispers your name. It's not supposed to be a boy that your skin blooms for.

And if that does happen, despite the fact that it shouldn't, you're definitely not supposed to lie to your soulmate's face, refuse to say his name in return, and pretend that you never felt your soulmark appear at all. And if that happens, somehow, you're definitely not supposed to kiss him less than a year later. And then later. And then later. And then later, until you realize you never want to leave his bed despite the fact that you've never told him the truth about the bear tattoo on your chest.

or, finding out that his soulmate is Shane Hollander isn't beautiful. Ilya can't pretend that it's not life-changing though.

  8. Shane Hollander is a hockey legend known as "The Golden Alpha of Canada:" and Captain of the Montreal Voyagers. To the roaring crowds, he’s cocky, dominant, untouchable Alpha they want in a hockey star. Yet, behind every goal, Shane hides a secret that could destroy everything he's built up. He isn’t an Alpha at all. Born Omega in a world where Omegas are sidelined from traditional "Alpha" sports, Shane’s entire career is built on a lie: daily suppressants, fake scent, relentless self-control. The cost is soul-deep exhaustion and the constant fear that a single mistake will cost him not just his trophies, but his identity.

Enter Ilya Rozanov, known as “The Dirty Russian” by fans and foes alike, a brutal, magnetic Alpha who’s battled his own demons to make it on the Voyager team. Growing up in the shadow of an abusive father who threw him into sports to "make me fucking rich", Ilya learned to survive by being harder, meaner, and utterly unbreakable. Hockey is his way out, but family obligations and old scars still chain him down..

When a chance encounter lets Ilya see Shane for who he truly is, both men are forced to confront the walls they’ve built, around their histories, their bodies, and their hearts.

  9. Shane is adjusting to a lot of things in his life.

It's just a little more difficult than he'd like to comfort his new owner, in a country where he doesn't speak the language, all while trying to maintain just enough of a physical and emotional distance that he can recover from this when it all inevitably falls apart.

  10. Men do not cry. Ilya knows this, as much as he knows that being strong is only part of the battle ahead of him; being seen to be strong matters more. Ilya is twelve years old, and no longer a child. It has been four long, brittle days since his mother— since her accident.

The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.

Ilya believes he is practiced at both.

  11. They met at thirteen in a locker room that smelled like sweat and cheap detergent. Shane thought he'd forget the loud Russian boy with the crooked smile. He didn't. Years later, they're drafted to the same team. Teammates. Strangers. Except Shane still knows exactly where Ilya is on the ice without looking. Some habits never die.

  12. “I think you don’t hate me as much as you want to. I think you’re curious about me. I think-” Ilya leans in, voice dropping even lower. “I think you watch my highlights. Late at night, when no one is looking.”

Shane Hollander is bred for greatness: son of a future Prime Minister, Canada’s golden boy, first overall pick. Ilya Rozanov is Russia’s answer: the President’s son, cocky and brilliant, everything Shane is supposed to beat.

Their rivalry begins at seventeen with an overtime goal and a blown kiss. It evolves in hotel rooms and stolen hours between games they’re supposed to hate each other through. For seven years, they hide what they are while the world watches them compete, until one catastrophic hit forces Ilya to make an impossible choice in front of twenty thousand people.

What starts as Cold War propaganda becomes something neither of them can control. And when you’re in love with your rival, winning and losing stop meaning what they used to.

  14. Ilya knew he had fucked up the moment he'd said it. But he hadn't been able to help it.

He had known earlier that day when he had double checked his refrigerator to make sure the Canada Dry ginger ale he had bought the day before hadn't sprouted wings and flown away. And he had known when he had researched easy recipes of things he could make that fit Hollander's strict performance diet earlier that week that they were playing a dangerous game.

The two of them were Rozanov and Hollander, and that was all they could ever be. Ilya knew that. They were Hollander and Rozanov to the public, to the media, to their teammates, to their coaches, and they were supposed to be that to each other as well.

But Ilya had called him Shane. And then Shane had left.

  15. “Is captain's job to overcome all… factors. He got too full of himself. Never reached his real potential. Is shameful.” Okay, this is bullshit. Shane shoots Ilya a look, and the fucker won't still look at him. He also doesn't react to Grigori's words like he's heard them before. Well Shane hasn't and he has a few points he'd like to make. He fucking done being polite. Because what the fuck? “Respectfully, I disagree,” says Shane and instantly feels four pairs of eyes on him. Or, when Shane meets Ilya's father at an event and hears him shittalk his son, he has a few things to say about it.

  16. "I’m sorry, I am just—” He drops his fork to wave his hand around, the way he does when he's searching for the proper word. He knows enough English words to describe what it is he’s feeling, but they don’t feel like adequate descriptors. My father, the man I loathe, is dying, and there is nothing I can do to save him. Everyone in my life expects so little of me, and I feel as though I may disappear. I feel like, if I did disappear, perhaps the world would be all the better for it. You are the only man in my life who has made me feel happy to take up space. Shane, tell me, what is the English word for this?

Ilya Rozanov's okay, not good, probably bad day.

Set during a liminal space of my design between the All-Star game and Ilya's father's death.

  18. Ilya was a machine. He was an animal trained. He brought the cigarette up to his lips and sucked in. His chest burned. Yesterday the door was ajar when he passed by his parents’ bedroom. Standing still in the hallway he watched for a minute as his mother, sitting like a soldier at her vanity, used her fingers to spread a thick peach-colored paint across her left cheekbone and around her eye. Ilya took another breath. He lit his lungs on fire.

He doesn’t know how he ends up in the downstairs coat closet.

No memory exists of moving, of going down the staircase and shedding his ruined clothing until he’s only in his underwear, or opening the door and ripping all of Mama’s coats down to the floor. Vaguely, he recalls trembling in the cloud of her scent, stale and unhappy under the haze of old cigarettes.

What he remembers is flashes. Alexei, furious tears in his eyes, telling Papa he’d found Ilya. Papa, scowling down at him, snapping, “Ilya, get out of this closet right now.” One of Papa’s cop friends, saying, “Jesus, Grika, look at him. He’s in h—” and Papa replying coldly, “Not another word.”

Papa, kneeling in front of the closet, saying in an uncomfortable, painfully false, soft voice, “Synok, come out now. You cannot nest here.”
