Why else would he have Shane on his list of people to contact in an emergency. Getting that call from Cliff Marleau was not how Shane anticipated his life going, but here he is and he has some big decisions to make, with or without Ilya.

“I—” Shane starts, before pausing. He thinks he's going to throw up. He thinks that they got it right all those years ago, with it's the hope that kills you. He thinks he has to be brave enough for the both of them, to actually ask, and he's so fucking scared, but he can't let Rozanov's quiet offer of something go unanswered—he'll regret it for the rest of his life if he doesn't take a chance. “Ilya.”

If the percentage of gay ex-boyfriends Rose has was anything less than 70%, or if her self- esteem had been any lower, she might have been offended or hurt right now. The realization had started slowly. And still, even now, her own experience with Shane and what she knows of him only allows for the picture to change slightly and become one of him actually enjoying sex, but not anything beyond that. He is still socially uncomfortable and hates talking about sex except for that one joke that started out as one of the worst sentences Rose thinks she’s ever uttered out loud. The shy and hesitant version of Shane is still firmly cemented in her mind. Rose is curious, though. She never really stops being curious. It’s impressive, really, how much doubt Rae manages to communicate though the gentle press of a sponge. Whatever. Rose figured out Shane’s sexuality before he did. It shouldn’t be that much more difficult for her to figure out who his boyfriend was. She does have excellent gaydar after all. Though she really wishes it would more frequently kick in before she started sleeping with yet another gay man. Or, Shane Hollander has a boyfriend. Rose is going to find out who it is, one way or another.
