  2. Ilya avoids skin contact with known sentinels as much as he can. It’s unlikely for compatibility to be high enough for a physical reaction. Ilya’s already managed to be a difficult guide. He can’t risk exposing his secret for the sake of camaraderie. But Hollander is pretty, and Ilya is not thinking about him being a sentinel, or the danger, or the pull he’s felt since he laid eyes on Hollander in person. He’s just thinking that he wants to touch him.

    So he does.

And the touch sparks, bright and instant.

    OR

Shane is a sentinel and Ilya is a guide. For the sake of their secrets, they should keep their distance. They don't.

It saves both their lives (and ruins them)

  3. Ilya Rozanov is on top of the world. Fast cars, a hot boyfriend, a successful hockey career. Sure, he hasn’t fallen in love with his boyfriend yet, but like everything else falling in love just requires hard work. He’ll get there eventually.

When Shane Hollander crashes back into his life, Ilya starts to question if the top of the world might actually be more of a home shaped place with a fluffy orange cat and an annoying hockey player. But Ilya can’t just ditch his plans to go to Paris with his boyfriend and run off with Shane Hollander instead. Right?

  5. Shane Hollander has built himself around routine, his life blood is hockey. Struggling to understand his team off the ice and the people around him, he carves out a few silent hours to himself. It's just him and his skates. But the hard fought peace is fragile, like cracks in too thin ice. It only takes a slight impact to shatter. Shane is fighting to hold his team and himself together as everything comes crashing down around him.

Someone hacks into Rose Landry's phone in a club, they then release the images of Shane's texts online and all hell breaks loose. Shane is left to pick up the pieces. Ilya makes some choices in the aftermath that change everything. Shane decides to stop hiding and Ilya is a possessive asshole who makes it everyone else's problem. With far less reason to hide himself anymore, Shane begins to show more of who he really is behind the polite, media worthy façade. They instead find a team who are ready to fight the world for each other and a found family that has far reaching threads.

Maybe Shane can have both Hockey and Ilya. The world will just have to deal with it.

  6. Shane is hiding something that could end his career. Ilya is the kind of person who doesn’t stop until he finds it. What starts as rivalry turns into fixation. Because something about Shane doesn’t make sense, his control, his scent, the way he reacts. And Ilya doesn’t like unsolved patterns. He likes breaking them open. Even if it breaks Shane with it. Not instinct. Not luck. Not being an alpha. Control. So when he watches Shane play, he sees it immediately, something precise, something careful, something just out of reach. Something hidden. And Ilya has never been good at leaving things alone.

Flight 771 shouldn't have been any different than any of the hundreds of other flights that Shane has taken over the course of his career, aside from the fact that it was taking him towards his lifelong dream—towards the Olympics.

It shouldn't have been any different.

  11. The truth was, yeah, Shane married Ilya, but he’d married hockey first. He married hockey the second he signed his rookie contract with the Metros, and his courtship began long, long before. And his marriage to hockey wasn’t like his marriage to Ilya. Hockey wouldn’t ever love him back. Ilya wasn’t going to chew Shane up and spit him out at some nebulous point after he turned thirty and before he turned forty, his joints busted and his mouth full of dentures and his brain fucked to hell and back. And that marriage—his first marriage—had always come before his second, illicit shotgun wedding.

It wasn’t ideal, maybe, but that was just how things were. Hell, it was probably the same for Ilya, too. The fuck was Shane supposed to do about it? Nothing, nothing, nothing. He liked his life just the way it was. He didn’t want to do anything different. He still doesn’t. And that’s the worst, most shameful part of it all: at the end of the day, some part of Shane will always wish he could wind back time like adjusting a watch; erase that Instagram post before it ever hit the internet and go back to the life they’d had before; the life that was slowly killing them both.

  12. “Ilyusha,” Vasilisa says. “We are keeping this up indoors also.”

    “Is sun umbrella. For sun.”

    “There are lights.”

Ilya looks at Shane over her head. He looks exhausted, thinner than Shane likes, and happier than Shane has ever seen him.

“You see what you did,” he says. “Tyranny, everywhere, and everywhere, enablers.”

  13. It's 2006 and Shane Hollander, in a gay panic, hooks up with his girlfriend Jessica. The consequences of that night – well. It might be the stupidest thing he's ever done. But also, maybe, sort of the best.

  15. When Shane was outed half-an-hour before the NHL Draft, he thought it would be the worst day of his life. And when he proceeded to slide all the way into the third round, he wasn’t sure how he would survive. Then his new team banished him back to the OHL for two years until he aged out, and Shane burned at the humiliation.

On his good days, though, Shane could admit that it’d made him stronger. He was a better player now, and more comfortable in himself, and more ready to take the NHL by storm. Every time he’d thought that he was finished, he’d been wrong.

So maybe he’d survive playing on the same team as Ilya fucking Rozanov.

    ~ ~ ~

Shane is outed publicly 30 minutes before the first draft pick is announced. Ilya goes #1 overall to the Boston Bears. Shane is picked #65 overall in the third round… also by the Boston Bears.

  16. It’s Ilya who brings it up. He’s in his kitchen, making himself some kind of soup that Shane is already searching for recipes of—it’s called rassolnik. Leaning with one hip against the counter, he asks, “What about your sex dungeon?”

“I don’t have a sex dungeon,” Shane says, both grossed out and intrigued by the idea.

“The apartment, moya lyubov,” Ilya replies, fondness sheathed in annoyance. He slurps loudly, laughing when Shane makes a face at him over their video call. “What will you do with the apartment?”

    “Sell it, maybe.”

    --

Or, Shane doesn't sell the secret-sex-apartment building. He starts renting it out, and somehow ends up with a gaggle of Russian tenants-turned-friends, several stray cats, and one very spoiled hamster.

  18. He told his team he was gay because he trusted them.

For weeks, Shane has made excuses for every stare and every uncomfortable silence. He has swallowed his anger every time one of them treated him like a freak, has spent almost two months twisting himself into something smaller, trying to convince them that he is still the same man who has led this team for years.

In return, for his efforts, they did this.

They went to a store—or, worse, sat together online—and selected every fucked up piece of this costume. They found a women’s jersey with Ilya’s name on the back, bought fucking fishnets in his size, found a cheap set of bunny ears plus tail, grabbed those ridiculous shorts, then brought all of it here so they could laugh when Shane opened the bag.

Shane presses the heels of his hands against his eyes, refusing to cry in Miitty’s guest room. He's not going to give them that.

    He wants Ilya.

  19. “Boys, I appreciate the thought you’ve put into this so far,” Yuna said. “But there’s no way you're hiding this for ten years. It is going to leak. We need an actual reasonable plan for you to come out safely and be happy so you can do this on your own terms and not be miserable.”

    --

The ten-year plan was never going to work. Fortunately, thanks to Yuna, Shane and Ilya now have a new and improved plan that could have them safe and happy in just a year or two's time. They just have to want it bad enough.

Ottawa a year early. Support from friends and family. Therapy. Rebranded images. A more confident and secure Shane. A public friendship hard launch. A relationship soft launch.
