  5. “Do story time, pease” Irina says with a sleepy pout, and Shane could hear Jackie’s soft “aww”. He smiles as he watches Ilya’s gaze soften, staring at his daughter for a moment before nodding once. ‘Story time’ referred to Irina’s nightly bedtime story; she usually needed at least 2 books read with the occasional scene getting acted out before she could fall asleep. Hayden is usually the only other person Irina allows to do story time, enjoying how he changes his voice for each character, so Shane knows this is a big deal. “Once again I am betrayed” Hayden grumbles and Shane pats his shoulder in sympathy before walking down the corridor. He hears Ilya following him and can’t help the fluttering in his chest. Shane and Irina’s lives were never going to be the same again. Shane and Ilya are playing together in Ottawa. They're married. They're happy. But is it time for the next step? This starts one year after The Long Game book ends. Baby Games 1 year after Long Game “Why on earth are you smiling?” Shane wants to know as they head down the snow-covered Montreal street. His words form puffy white clouds that hang momentarily in the air between them. “And why couldn’t we take the team bus with everyone else?” The team is staying at the Four Seasons, like they do every time they play Montreal, and it’s close enough to walk to and from the arena. But the team still provides a bus to transport them the three short blocks. In spring months, many players walk it instead, but this is January, and it’s a nut-numbing minus twenty. “This weather reminds me of Regina,” Ilya says simply with what might be a shrug, but Shane is shivering too much to really be able to tell. His hair is still damp from his shower at the rink after the morning skate, and it’s starting to freeze at his neckline. Ilya’s words sink in, and suddenly Shane isn’t thinking about the cold. Their eyes meet. Ilya’s look incredibly blue in the bright white light reflecting off the snow. Ilya smiles. Shane does too. Then Ilya admits, “Makes me want to smoke.” Shane rolls his eyes. “You’re not allowed to smoke.” “Okay,” Ilya says flatly, like he did that day a million years ago before the World Juniors, and then he winks at his husband. “Hollander!” Someone yells from across the street so loudly that they hear it over the din of traffic moving across De La Montagne Street. Shane’s head swivels out of habit even though he knows better than to respond to anyone in Montreal. When his eyes find the middle-aged guy standing by the bus stop, Shane instinctively reaches out to touch Ilya’s arm. The guy had pulls off his gloves and throws both middle fingers high in the air. “Traitorous faggot!” Shane turns away and keeps his arm firmly on Ilya’s arm. He keeps walking up the street, head down, dragging Ilya by the sleeve on his navy peacoat. “Just ignore it.” “Is homophobia. Is not okay, Hollander!” Ilya’s English gets basic when he is pissed off or upset. Or drunk. And the last name thing also kicks back in. “Yeah. Fuck him,” Shane grumbles. “No, thank you,” Illya retorts, and a quick look shows his head is still turned and he’s glaring over his shoulder at the guy now a block away. “Okay. Well, then let’s get back to the hotel room, and you can fuck me instead,” Shane offers. “My dick will probably be frozen and fall off by then,” Ilya replies. “Why the fuck did I want to walk?” Shane almost smiles at that. Ilya finally stops looking back and falls in step beside his husband. And then he picks up the pace, with a hand on Shane’s lower back, pushing him to keep up. “Let’s get back so we can warm each other up.” No one shares rooms anymore due to the new player contract agreement, so Shane and Ilya have their own hotel rooms. It’s an unwritten rule that they are given connecting hotel rooms. They never ask for them, but they get them every time. Ilya has thought about telling his team’s travel coordinator there’s no need to waste money on two rooms connected or otherwise, but he has the feeling that the team and the league needed the pretense of it all. Pretense was what Shane called it anyway. Yuna called it other words like ridiculous and delusional. Ilya doesn’t give a shit. They could put them in one room, joining rooms or entirely different hotels on opposite ends of a city, he would still find a way to sleep in the same bed as Shane. When they get back to the hotel room, Ilya begins stripping off Shane’s layers in silence. First his scarf, then jacket, then hat. Ilya pauses to run his fingers through the damp ends of Shane’s dark, silky hair. They’re stiff, almost frozen. He brings his mouth to Shane’s. Shane’s lips are cold, but his tongue is warm and eager. Ilya will never get over how eager Shane is for every touch. It turns Ilya’s own desire up a notch every single time. It never gets old. “I hate playing here,” Ilya whispers into the kiss as he moves his mouth to Shane’s neck. “Everyone does. It’s Montreal,” Shane murmurs, his hands undoing the chunky buttons on Ilya’s coat. “They are ungrateful. You did so much for them.” Ilya complains as his hands make their way under the cable knit sweater Shane wore to the morning skate. Ilya had made fun of it when they were at breakfast. Told Shane it made him look like a dad in a bad holiday movie. The kind women watch on TV from November to January. But the truth is, he likes the idea of Shane being a dad, so he likes him looking like one. He just doesn’t know if he can tell Shane that… yet. “I know. It’s okay,” Shane replies, and then his breath hitches as Ilya’s hands – freezing cold – touch his skin just under his ribs and begin moving upward. “Not okay,” Ilya argues, and as soon as the sweater is up over Shane’s head, Ilya’s mouth is on one of his nipples, sucking and licking. “Not your fault,” Shane reminds him in a rough, breathy voice. Ilya knows Shane doesn’t blame him for the way he’d felt forced to leave the Metros, but Ilya blames Ilya.

  12. Ilya tracked the movement with his eyes, his tongue darting out to wet his lower lip. Shane shuddered. He had no idea what to call this, this… electricity. He had never felt anything like it before. Deep down he was pretty sure he knew what an outsider would call this but that couldn’t be. He had dated women. Several women. The relationships had been… mostly fine? The women had been lovely. They had been good friends. They had kissed - politely and in front of people a lot of the time - it had been a usual, typical relationship. He was just a gentleman… right? As the air sucked out all his breath, as he plunged deep underwater and felt his ears beginning to pop, Shane could see Ilya moving closer to him. Gently, Ilya placed a hand on Shane’s knee, rubbing his fingertips in careful circles. Shane was sure he should have died from lack of air by now. ** Or: Ilya Rozanov only wants two things: to be a principal ballet dancer and for Shane Hollander to be his boyfriend. Unfortunately Shane doesn't know what he wants.

After a bad hit, Ilya insists he’s fine. After all, he's survived way worse than a concussion. Shane doesn’t believe him—and shows up anyway. Shane was wedged into the middle of the couch, his dad to his left, his mom’s feet tucked beneath her on his right. The Raiders game hummed through the living room, the volume a notch too loud, the voices of the commentators confident in that polished, charismatic way. His mom reacted a half-second ahead of the play like she always did, his dad chiming in here and there. Shane nodded when he was supposed to, smiled when they did, and kept his hands loose in his lap so no one would notice how tightly his fingers wanted to curl as he watched Ilya glide across the ice—fierce, effortless, commanding attention every time he came into frame. Midway through the second period, the Raiders finally managed to set something up in Ottawa’s zone. The puck moved back to the point, a quick pass across the blue line before a shot was fired through traffic. The shot was low and messy, the kind meant to create chaos more than score outright. The Ottawa goalie dropped into a butterfly and kicked the puck away with his pad, sending the rebound skidding into the crease. Ilya was already there, parked in front of the net, jostling for position with a defenseman, his back half-turned. The rebound hit him before he even had time to react—clipping the inside edge of his skate and redirecting just enough to slip past the goalie’s outstretched leg and dribble over the line. For a beat, the arena and everyone inside of it seemed confused. Then the horn went off, the goal light flashing as the puck settled in the back of the net. Shane watched Ilya turn in a slow, bewildered circle, stick lifted like he wasn’t entirely sure what he’d just done. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Shane’s dad groaned, already dropping his head back against the couch. “That’s not even skill. That’s just dumb luck.” His mom laughed, sharp and pleased. “Luck still counts,” she said. “You don’t get those goals unless you’re in the right place. Say what you will, but Rozanov is good at that. He’s always driving the net and causing chaos.” Shane nodded, keeping his expression neutral. “Yeah,” he said. “An ugly goal’s still a goal.” Shane kept his eyes fixed on the screen, but inside he was grinning. He could already picture it later—his phone propped up against the lamp on his bedside table, Ilya’s face filling the screen, hair still damp from his shower and pretending like the whole thing had been deliberate. He’d talk about the importance of positioning, about instincts, about reading the play, like the puck hadn’t bounced off his skate while he wasn’t even looking. Shane imagined himself leaning back on his bed, watching Ilya sell it with that infuriatingly smug face, the pause before the shrug, the way his mouth would twitch like he was daring Shane to call him on it. Obviously I meant to do that, Hollander, he’d say, completely serious. Shane would laugh, remind him of the replay, maybe even send him a link to the video. Ilya would protest, offended on principle, but secretly pleased. Shane felt the grin settle deeper in his chest, a quiet, private thing. He stayed still on the couch, expression carefully mild, already looking forward to later—when the game would be over, when the call would connect, when it would be just the two of them on opposite ends of the screen. It had been longer than he liked since the last time Shane had seen Ilya in person. A road trip that stretched on and on, cities blurring together, flights and back-to-backs stealing whatever gaps they might have had. Over a month now, which felt ridiculous to miss someone this much when they talked almost every day, but the distance had a way of changing the math. Calls flattened things. Screens cut Ilya down to the shoulders and face Shane already knew by heart. Their last time together had been quick, almost stolen. A night squeezed in between travel days, Ilya’s suitcase half-unpacked on the floor, the room smelling faintly of hotel soap and the cigarette Ilya swore would be his last. They’d ordered takeout, eaten it out of the containers, knees knocking under the sheets. Shane remembered the weight of Ilya’s arm slung over his shoulders later, the solid, anchoring heat of his bare skin, the way Ilya had gone quiet in that rare, unguarded way that meant he was tired enough to stop performing. Shane and Ilya had talked about getting together when Ilya passed through Ottawa—had lingered on the idea longer than either of them admitted out loud. Shane had stared at the map on his phone, thumb hovering, quietly calculating the drive. Two hours. Maybe a little more with traffic. Doable. Tempting. He’d been the one to shut it down. “Don’t be stupid,” Shane had said, fond but firm, even as part of him didn’t want to let it go. “I’ve got an early flight the next day out of Montreal. We’d barely get any time.” It had sounded practical. Responsible. Like the right call. He’d memorized that last night instead, like he’d known this stretch was coming—how Ilya fit against him, how steady he felt when he finally let himself rest. He’d stood in the doorway the next morning and watched Ilya pack with methodical care, all focus and muscle memory, like leaving was just another drill to get through. … On the ice, the noise blurred. Ilya’s ears rang in a low, persistent hum that followed him as he skated back into position. He shook his head once, subtle. The goal still echoed in the arena, teammates tapped his helmet. He grinned widely when he was supposed to, lifted a hand to the crowd that booed him, played the part. All he could think about was the shit Shane was going to give him later. The image came uninvited: Shane’s mouth tilting up, eyes bright with it, already lining up the jokes. Great move, he’d say. Really subtle. Ilya huffed out a breath through his nose and forced his focus back to the red line, the faceoff dot, the geometry of the ice. Thinking about Shane during a game was always a mistake.
