  1. He isn’t in control. Everything feels cold and distant and empty. Shane stares at his shaking hand, loosely gripping the door handle, and begs it to move, turn, so he can get away. He can’t be here anymore, and yet there is nowhere else he’d rather be. He’s suffocating; there is no air left in this room, he’s sure of it. He tilts forward without meaning to, leaning his forehead against the door, trying to stay upright. Or, Shane experiences subdrop after the events in Vegas, because he absolutely would.

  2. “But is there anything I say that you would like me to not tease about?” Ilya asked once again, as he put his arm back around Shane's shoulder and used his hand to tilt Shane's head up so he could make eye contact. “... No I don't think so.” Shane said, looking anywhere but into Ilya’s eyes. Ilya could feel all of Shane’s body tense up as he spoke. “All these years later and you are still bad liar.” Ilya said, combing his hand through his boyfriend's soft black hair. Or A comment from Hayden makes Ilya worried that he might have unintentionally hurt Shane by joking about the wrong thing.

  3. He is out of breath when he reaches the lockers' floor, eyes sweeping the corridor ahead with the frenzy of small animals, their twitchy hearts racing as if constantly hunted down. Shane lets out a loud, shaky exhale when he finally sees him. Ilya is standing on the other side of the dim hallway, the crude light of his phone on his face making him stand out, almost ghastly in the dark. He is leaning against the wall by the green exit sign, frowning, and biting his lips. Shane doesn’t call his name. He flies to him like a moth to a flame.

  5. After the miracle recovery, Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander are back together. One day, Shane gets a phonecall from Ilya's doctor. She asks Shane to come in immediately, alone. He is scared shitless. Turns out, there is no need to be because Captain Rozanov is clearly back in the game. And he can skate again. *** This is a part of my on-going "Hold On (I Still Want You)" series and cannot really be read as stand-alone, therefore I strongly recommend getting the context from the first fic!

  6. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Rozy.” That was a lie; he knew perfectly well what was wrong with him, he just wouldn’t admit it to himself. “I thought therapy would help, and I also thought winning the cup would help, but I guess we’re both just too fucked in the head for that.” Ilya laughs softly, nodding. or Shane Hollander studied through conversations, interactions, and therapy. or Shane accidentally gets diagnosed with autism

  7. “No. I did have to. You were upset. Is not okay for you to be upset. Ever.” Shane blinks at him. Rozanov blinks back. Neither comment on his words – on the lines they cross, ever so slightly. When Shane doesn’t protest, Rozanov smiles sweetly, swiping his thumb over the man’s bottom teeth. He feels along the ridges of each tooth, pressing his blunt nail into the gums behind them. “Sweet thing. You come to me if you feel this way, yes? I will make it all better.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Shane has a hard week, resulting in a meltdown. He calls Ilya. Ilya decides to fuck it all better. Spoiler: it works.

  8. Everything was going smoothly. The plan was working soon they could breathe. The foundation was doing great, the camps were working, Ottawa was getting better since Ilya became captain of the team and their relationship....it was so good that they were true with themselves, their close friends and family. Well that's what Shane thought until the wall crumbled and he saw the brutal truth right in front of him. + Everything happens back to back. The boys don't take a break until summer Everything was going smoothly. The plan was working soon they could breathe. The foundation was doing great, the camps were working, Ottawa was getting better since Ilya became captain of the team and their relationship....it was so good that they were true with themselves, their close friends and family. Well that's what Shane thought until the wall crumbled and he saw the brutal truth right in front of him Ilya hadn't been himself for a while now. But their schedules didn't help them to actually talk about serious stuff when one of them flew away or had practice. Anytime they meet Shane would forget about this concern and drown in their lustful time together. ....... It all happened too fast for Shane to catch up. It was just a party And Shane didn't realize that it wasn't just the party it was everything. They both said many things. Things both of them regretted. They had their biggest fight they had in years And Shane didn't hold back. He fired back. He didn't hold back and said some nasty things to Ilya. Why did he ask him ? Why did he push for the answer ? Why did he push him ? WOULD YOU CHOOSE ME? He was an asshole He had been crying since he left Ilya. Would Ilya choose shane? Really!! He already did!!! Ilya gave so much for them. He had left a great team to move to Ottawa and be closer to Shane. God, he made his boyfriend move to his hometown. Away from the friends he made in Boston, even the complicated friendship he had with Svetlana. He had friends and family that supported him and expected Ilya to be cool that his friends and family accepted him as Shane's boyfriend?? It was true that Ilya only had people that were from Shane's side as friends. Their fight really wasn't about the party It was because Ilya wanted...no, he needed to breathe. Ilya and shane had talked briefly, both had games elsewhere not having the time to meet and talk. Only from facetime that was limited by the schedules. But it was enough to give them some air to breathe. But they would talk when they were both home.

  9. “Come on, Shane don’t be like this.” “Be like what exactly?” Shane found himself biting out, already regretting the answer the moment the words left his mouth. Hayden groaned, the sound of his tired exhale hanging in the air as he dropped his greasy bag of fast food onto the nightstand. With a soft rustle of sheets, he settled onto the edge of the bed. Shane could feel his eyes on him, though he was still facing away, not being able to bring himself to meet Hayden’s eyes just yet. “Look, I’m just not used to it yet, alright?” Hayden’s voice was low, edged with frustration. “Can you blame me? We used to talk shit about him all the time, and now I’m just supposed to... what? Like Rozanov?” -- Or: Despite the dinner with Hayden eventually ending with an apology, and some sort of truce between Hayden and Ilya, Shane is still struggling.

  10. Ilya considers, then, the idea of a smaller joy, the kind so molecular no one would know how to make him feel sorry for any of it. He thinks of Svetlana and him at McDonald’s, drunk and laughing; sprints, instead of long and dreadful runs; and even then that familiar swath of freckles, all faded from weak winter sun. There are times when Ilya is sorry, and there are times when he is not. (or: Heated Rivalry, as told through so many apologies.)

  11. March 15, 2020. The entire Ottawa Centaurs team is mandated to quarantine in New York, as Harris Drover tested positive with COVID during the Centaurs’ away game against the New York Admirals. This includes Ilya Rozanov, who is quarantining with Luca Haas in a shabby hotel room. Shane Hollander, on the other hand, moved into the cottage with his parents to hide from all the chaos. How will Shane and Ilya keep in touch and stay sane while the whole world is on lockdown? —OR— Hollanov Covid 19 Pandemic AU

  13. Ilya Rozanov would be tempted to enact Cold War levels of biological warfare against his opponent if only Scott Hunter didn’t already look as awful as he feels. The other hockey player faces him, sending a death stare in his direction and clutching his stick in a way that would be intimidating if he weren’t Scott Fucking Hunter and if it wasn’t obvious he wasn’t trying with all his might to prevent himself from taking a nosedive onto the ice. Ilya would manage a quip if he could muster the energy to - something about how the old man should really have taken a sick day - but keeps his mouth shut, totally because he doesn’t want to kick someone when they’re obviously already down, not in any way because his own throat hurts too much to talk of course. Maybe this game will be easier than he thought; the Centaurs seem to be faring at least a little better than their big apple competitors, who seem to be in worse form, if that’s even possible considering how terrible Ilya feels, several of the opposing team coughing into fists or sniffling so loudly it hurts his already pounding head. Barrett has been borderline obsessive since the very start of whatever it is that has been making the rounds of the league, not wanting to risk getting Harris sick and although the team haven’t completely averted it, they are mostly at full capacity; Hayes on top form after being out for the last game, Luca at the tail end of the worst of it, and Boodram somehow managing to skate free from the cold that has been working its way through the rest of the team. In all honesty, they probably should have cancelled. The idea was toyed with this morning, or at the very least presented as a possibility to Ilya when he reluctantly fessed up at morning practice to the fact that he’d been running a fever since last night. It had been the fault of the New York Admirals that they didn’t withdraw, thanks to a stalemate sparked by the word on the street being that their opponents - and particularly their star captain - were struck down with this same flu and might pull out before they could. Neither team withdrew, as had become all too clear with just an hour before the game. I can play, Ilya insisted. And so here they are. Ilya’s stick catches the puck first, Hunter just a moment too slow after him. God, Ilya thinks. The poor guy should just give it up; he is sure good old Kip Grady will be somewhere in the crowds waiting for the end of the last period so he can wrangle his fiance into bed with a blanket and a mug of honey-lemon tea and enough nyquil to dose a horse or just a hockey player with a bad case of man-flu after the game. Although perhaps he is projecting. Someone from the other team - he doesn’t care to register who - checks him, and somewhere in the chaos Ilya ends up being the one to almost take a nosedive onto the ice, his balance off but whether from the loss of his ego or the blade flying from his skate without his knowledge he isn’t entirely sure. For a brief second - less than a second really - he stays like that, staring down at the ice on his hands and knees and contemplating walking out of the rink without so much as a glance back. He’s still considering it as he maneuvers himself off the ice to fix the aforementioned blade issue, but he shakes his head when someone - the coach or a trainer or perhaps someone on the bench - asks him if he wants to tap out. Besides, he doesn’t have his own bed and significant other waiting for him on the other side of this game like Scott Hunter does. Shane is god knows where, on the other side of the fucking country or something at some fucking gala event for one of his fucking sponsors or whatever and so Ilya will be returning to convalesce in his fucking New York hotel room alone after this fucking game, with only a fucking facetime call to tide him over if he’s lucky. This fucking game. This fucking city. This fucking cold. He chokes against the metallic taste coating the back of his mouth, somehow managing to suppress the coughing fit which has been threatening since the end of the first period. If he had to bet, he figures he has the best gag reflex in the entire league, but so much as thinking about the presence of his mouth guard at this moment clattering against his teeth has him fearing he might blow chunks on the ice if he isn't careful. He can only imagine what the commentators might say, the headlines the next morning. He hates this, he hisses as the Admirals level the score. His body not feeling right, not feeling like his own. He’s used to the satisfying hum of muscle memory, being where he needs to be a moment before he even thinks about it. He’s still moving fast, still playing like he always does for the most part, but typically by this point in the game adrenaline is making itself at home; right now, the only thing making itself at home is the fucking crud in his chest. Scott is the one who scored, and Ilya watches him celebrate in envious disbelief, the older hockey player seemingly having taken on a second wind during the intermission. Ilya should ask him for advice on whatever home remedy has seemingly worked its magic, but he has a strong suspicion it has something to do with the man’s fiance in the crowd; a likely promise of the healing properties of true love’s kiss… or true love’s sucking of a dick, he smirks. “Having trouble keeping up, Rozanov?” Scott remarks, although it doesn’t have the intended bite coming from a man who at present sounds like a dying cat. “Oh are you, Hunter?” he furrows his brow, hoping his own hoarse voice sounds at least a little more rugged and less ridiculous. They share a knowing glance. It’s anyone’s game really, with the playing field levelled like this but it is the Centaurs who just barely manage to take the win by the end, a just-missed save allowing them to take back the lead when it really mattered. Ilya doesn’t gloat, and the celebrations are quite frankly a subdued affair, most of the players on the ice already burying their red noses into tissues and in a rush to get off the rink. “Good game,” Scott reaches a hand out to shake Ilya’s, before he hesitates, figuring it’s maybe not the best course of action when he is blatantly contagious. “It wasn’t,” Ilya takes Scott’s hand, shakes it firmly, running the back of his other hand against his dripping nose with a smirk. “But get well soon, yes? Beating you will feel better if actually fair next time.” “Yeah this cold’s a killer. Sorry, I wasn’t thinking; I wouldn’t want to get you sick.” “Too late.”

Shane nearly stops himself right there, runs through all of the ways he could navigate away from the question, but when he opens his mouth it comes right out anyway. "Was he hard on you too?" Or Ilya had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. He just hadn’t expected it to be about this, hadn’t expected, or maybe simply refused to accept, that his father would somehow still hurt him beyond the grave, that the punches and split lips and broken ribs would still, impossibly, ache within him after all this time. or Shane tries to talk to Ilya about his past. It doesn't go as planned.

  15. He chuckles, low and smooth. "Ah, I see. Tell you what- your parents come by, we have dinner, yes? Have a little chat, all of that. But when they leave, and I get you to myself… let me take care of you, hm? For being brave." His heart skips a beat, his stomach swoops low and flutters. His cheeks definitely get warm, and he nods a little dumbly. "Yes, yeah. Please." Back at the cottage, Shane unravels a little after talking to his parents. But Ilya is here to pick up the pieces and help hold them together- and Shane deserves a little reward after facing his fears.

  18. A squawk, followed by an incensed, “Jesus! It’s Hayden! Hayden Pike! Shane’s best friend? A guy you’ve played against for years?” Oh. This is… not good. Ilya very slowly lowers himself down on the bed, spine straight. “Why are you calling?” Pike huffs. “Trust me, I don’t want to be.” “Okay, then, why? How do you know… Lily?” A beat. Then, “You’re Lily.” Protectiveness rears its ugly head. Severely, Ilya declares, “This is none of your fucking concern.” “He’s asking for you.” OR: when Shane gets hurt on the ice, Hayden Pike reaches out to Boston Lily.

Shane gets a sudden urge to push Ilya away and get dressed, to go to one of the guest bedrooms and hide under a blanket until this is long forgotten. All of this would be forgotten. But he doesn’t. Instead he reaches for Ilya’s face, leans forward, cradles it in both hands and tries to drag him upwards. Away from his thighs. “Look at me,” he says, desperately, “kiss me, kiss me, please.” Ilya’s eyes are wide as he pulls away, “Shane,” he says, voice stern, “from when?” Shane doesn’t know what to say, doesn’t know why he thought Ilya wouldn’t notice, why he thought it could still be something unsaid between them, something that was clearly there but wasn’t that big of a deal. “It doesn’t matter, Ilya please-” Or: Healing is never linear.
