  1. Shane swallows the lump in his throat. “We need your help.” Yuna sounds slightly concerned, her voice tinny through the phone. “Is everything alright? Should we drive over?” “Yeah, um—we have a, uh. A—” “A baby,” Ilya finishes. “You are a grandmother now. Surprise.” “Sorry, did you—” Yuna pauses. They can hear David faintly in the background. “You mean, like, a baby animal? A puppy?” “A wishbaby,” Shane croaks. There’s silence on the other end of the line. “Surprise,” Ilya says again. Shane and Ilya win the Stanley Cup. They weren't exactly planning to also win a baby.

  2. Ilya was going to murder him.

He should have just corrected Scott. Should have said, "No, that's my best friend, we grew up together." Simple. But instead he'd agreed to bring his nonexistent boyfriend on the trip like an idiot.

How was he going to talk Ilya into this?

    -or-

The one where Shane accidentally lets his coworkers assume Ilya is his boyfriend and instead of telling them the truth, he convinces Ilya to play along for the weekend.

  4. “I could marry Svetlana.” Ilya says it the way he does in real life. Loose. Half-amused. Like he’s commenting on the weather or the merits of a toaster. "And I could have a gun. What's new?" Shane thinks. Shane can't hide the hurt in his eyes as he meets Ilya's gaze, calm and collected. "She's American, it would be easy citizenship," he pauses, typing on his phone absentmindedly. "She would do it. Her father is goalie Sergei Vitrov." Shane scoffs, "Yeah, you've told me." "She would help me..." Ilya says in a singsong tone. or; what if Shane never says "Don't Marry Svetlana" and dreams about it? Inspired by the song "Dream Cheater" by Precious Pepala

  5. You look so pretty when you’re angry. Shane blinked, his insides pooling inside him, like hot wax inside the end of a candle. He glanced around at Rose and Miles, who were chattering loudly, paying him no mind. He hadn’t heard from him since he had left, or well, fled, his house that day. Shane had checked the thread between them more than once, just to see if maybe his phone was glitched, that he had sent him a message and it just didn’t make its way through. Shane’s traitorous heart thumped faster as he tapped on the message, half-hoping it was a mirage, some kind of delusion from one too many blows to the head. He was always met with the same two messages, the last ones before Shane had run, and everything had settled like a rock sinking into the calm surface of a lake. Or, Ilya drunk texts Shane.

  7. They were always competing, in a league of their own, but always together. Every conversation they'd had about their future involved their careers ending the way they'd started. Together. Ilya had been with the Ottawa Centaurs for over eight years. He had turned a dying franchise into a team to be reckoned with. The addition of his husband only further cemented Ottawa's place in the league. But as the crowds grew bigger, and the team's points got higher, Ilya felt the flame within him dwindle. -- OR -- Ilya retires, featuring his final game and jersey #81 retirement ceremony.

Ilya tries to soft-launch the idea of retirement to Shane. Or: “Don’t have panic attack,” he starts with a squeeze of his fingers around his, which is probably a bad place to do that, the starting. He makes an effort to speak faster, “After we win Cup, I quit.” There. “Quit what?” Shane searches his eyes, bouncing between left and right and back. Ilya can’t help but laugh at his husband, as if the concept of ‘quitting’ and ‘hockey’ in the same sentence has never occurred to him before. It probably hasn’t. While he takes a deep inhale, Ilya adjusts his hold on the bag of ice on his angry, swollen knee that is in the middle of a suicide mission in protest of Ilya playing a professional sport in his late thirties. “Hockey.”

  12. “Wait, Mr. Raiders fan,” Rozanov calls. Constable Sullivan pauses. “I get a phone call, yes?” “Sure.” He pulls out his own phone. “Do you know the number?” Rozanov nods. The numbers all come out in a rush, as though he’s memorized it in one long string and can’t think of any of them separately. It’s a Montreal area code, the constable notes, as he types it in. As the phone rings, he puts it on speaker and asks Rozanov: “Who is it?” “Shane Hollander.” “Fuck off. Who is it really?” Or: in the midst of the Rose breakup, the Raiders win a game in Montreal. Unable to do what he normally does after Montreal games, Ilya goes out to a club, gets super drunk, and ends up getting picked up by Montreal police for public intoxication. Sitting in a holding cell, the only number he can remember is Shane's.

That was how he found himself sitting at the bar, a few days before the All-Star game, alone. Around him, groups of other players that he vaguely knew were all talking and laughing together. It was for the best, he had to tell himself to stop the jealousy from eating him from the inside out.

  19. Looking back at it now, how he longed for his own bed, he thought maybe his mother wasn’t lazy at all, but maybe her own mind and heart were just simply too heavy for her to lift. He hoped that practice would help his mood lift, and his medication would kick in. He’d be back to being himself. The rink was cold when Shane and he entered, hand in hand, and the loud chatter of his team immediately made a headache bloom behind his eyes. Ilya is having a bad depression day, but at the end of it all Shane is right there to help him.
