  1. They call it a Lucid Interval. A brief moment of clarity after a traumatic brain injury where the patient appears fine. Awake. Alert. Happy.

After the hit, Shane Hollander wakes up. He jokes with the nurses. He smiles at Ilya. He makes plans for the summer.

Ilya Rozanov just outed himself to the entire world on live television to save him, but he can't save him from this. Shane isn't getting better. He is dying. And these are the last conversations they will ever have.

A story about the hit, the confession, and the long, slow silence that followed.

They weren't saying goodbye to each other; Ilya was too confident that Shane would win.

    Shane loved winning.

He lost, the first lost that Ilya didn't enjoy.

Because he only left Ilya to suffer more.

  2. “So… you and Rozanov, huh? That's a thing now?” Shane freezes, “What?” You're starting to sound like him. They never really talked about that, just moved on like nothing happened. After Scott kissed his boyfriend on the ice, Shane knew it wasn't meant to be anything homophobic, but he'd always still felt hesitant about it. While Scott might know about being a gay NHL player, even he wouldn't understand this. Besides, the media might have focused on Shane and Ilya being rivals, but there had always been much more hostility between Ilya and Scott. Scott gives him a strange look, “You're friends now, right? Or is that all PR?” “Oh.” He tries his best to remain calm and relaxed, even if his heart is beating loudly in his chest, “Yes. I mean, we've been friends for… a long time. Just… the media blew the whole rivalry out of proportion and it was… easier.” Scott nods slowly, sipping his drink, “How, though? I mean, no offense, but he's… well, an asshole.” (Or, Shane runs into Scott, who finds out their secret)

  4. Shane wipes his eyes, still catching his breath. "What, you don't have any Russian towns with rude names?" Ilya's dark brows knit together, his eyes drifting toward the ceiling as he mentally catalogs his homeland's geography. His fingers drum against the countertop, leaving small prints in the dusting of protein powder Shane spills. "There is Dobrye Pchely? Means kind bees." Shane's laughter fades into a soft, genuine smile. "Okay, but that is fucking adorable." He leans his hip against the counter and takes in the morning light catching the stubble on Ilya's jaw. "How is Russia cuter than Canada?" he marvels, voice warm with affection. Ilya's shoulders square defensively, chin jutting forward. "Russia is not cute. We have sensible names, not pant names!" "There's also a town called Dildo," Shane tells him, eyebrows raised in challenge.

  5. Now that he could finally recognize who the man in front of him was, everything flooded back into the forefront of his mind. The nights he spent in Moscow poring over hockey content on YouTube, how watching the teen that was poised to be his rival stirred up newfound ambition to become the greatest instead. He remembered that career-ending hit as well, the way Shane’s body crumpled on the ice, tiny and unconscious, body contorted unnaturally as his teammates crowded around him. He remembered the disappointment he felt at not having anyone else to best, to directly compare himself against. Time had passed, and so too did that disappointment in favor of achieving the greatness that Hollander promised. And with that time, Shane Hollander was just another name of the past. But now he was right in front of him, freckles all in the same spots and gear replaced with ugly knit sweaters. Or In which Shane Hollander never became the hockey legend he was supposed to. Ilya Rozanov did. Somehow, in the midst of a blizzard, their stories intertwined once more.

Unsurprisingly, Ilya is willing to let Shane put his mouth wherever he wants, and sometimes Ilya anticipates and reads Shane so well that it just about breaks Shane in half. 7. Shane slides onto the bar stool next to him. Elbow-to-elbow. In public, in the light of day, in front of everyone else in the bar. He doesn’t even hesitate. Ilya hadn’t thought Shane would be that brave. or Shane settles into himself. Ilya spirals. Shane walks into the resort bar like he owns it. Shoulders back, relaxed. He looks like he’s on set for one of the commercial shoots that Ilya will never admit he saves to watch when he’s alone. Ilya has seen him in a blazer before, of course. Ilya has seen him in tuxedos, head down and awkward like a kid trying on a grown-up costume. He doesn’t look like that now. He looks like a man dating a movie star. He looks like someone told him he’s Shane fucking Hollander, and he finally believed them. The butterflies that have been fluttering in Ilya’s stomach all morning concentrate into a knot of tension. Shane doesn’t play it cool or pretend not to notice him. He heads straight for Ilya. It’s the first time they’ve been in a city together when the hum of anticipation hasn’t built up under Ilya’s skin. The first time he’s been counting down the days with dread, as well as hungry, unacknowledged longing. Ilya gives himself a pep talk as Shane rounds the bar, and downs what’s left of his liquid courage. It’s time to act casual. What does it matter that Shane has a girlfriend he can be photographed in public with, who can make him smile without the need to hide it, who the world thinks is perfect for him. Ilya couldn’t care less. Shane slides onto the bar stool next to him. Elbow-to-elbow. In public, in the light of day, in front of everyone else in the bar. He doesn’t even hesitate. Ilya hadn’t thought Shane would be that brave. But maybe that isn’t important since they’re nothing anymore, with nothing to hide. Okay, Ilya tells himself. Let’s do this. Shane takes his duties as team captain seriously. Ilya should have expected that, even at the All-Star game, where no one takes anything seriously. Shane brings a different energy than Ilya to the role of captain. He’s calm and focused, attending to details and pre-show rituals like this is any other game of the season. Where Ilya hypes his team up before a game, Shane is the eye of the storm. The rest of the team whoops and jokes in the locker room before they take the ice, and all of them orbit around him like he’s their center of gravity. Ilya is more aware of Shane than he’s pretending to be, which is why he notices Shane circulating. He works his way through the team to speak with each player in turn. He mentions a highlight of their season so far, calling out a standout game or a specific play. He remembers something significant about every single one of them. Of course he does. Ilya wants to roll his eyes, but he has the feeling this isn’t only Shane’s encyclopedic knowledge of hockey at work. Their captain has done his homework. He knows how they shine brightest. Tonight, this is his team. Ilya leans casually against the wall when it’s finally his turn. “Saving best for last? You are here to tell me sweet words about your star player?” Shane’s expression is serious when he says, “Congratulations on not losing every game to Montreal this season.” He can’t hold onto it for long. The corners of his eyes crease and his lips curl up when Ilya dramatically clutches his chest and exclaims, “Everyone else in this room gets compliment.” “I had to think about yours for a while. That’s why I left you for last.” Shane’s eyes dance, bright and warm. “I know you’re not used to a fast center setting the pace. Try to keep up out there, okay?” Ilya doesn’t need to try. He and Shane move together on the ice like extensions of one thought. It’s automatic. Easy. Shane makes a blind pass to him and doesn't look back, like he trusts Ilya to always be exactly where Shane needs him to be. Shane disappears early from the afterparty. Ilya spends half an hour pretending he’s not searching the room for one particular person before he gives up and leaves. Shane doesn’t even glance up when Ilya sits down next to him on the beach. As if he knew Ilya would find him. As if he knew Ilya would look. Before the game, Shane had smelled of a new aftershave or cologne, something cool and spicy. It must have worn off by now, replaced by sunscreen and sweat, or the inoffensive soap from a post-game shower. They’re too close to the ocean, and too far apart from each other, for Ilya to tell. The sunset paints Shane gold. He’d stayed outside today long enough for the sun to bring out every freckle, a thousand constellations across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose. Ilya hasn’t been able to keep his eyes off him. By the pool, Shane’s pretty brown eyes had been covered by dark sunglasses that hadn’t actually hidden anything. Ilya would bet that Shane’s gaze was fixed on the water running down his chest and abs more than on his face. Shane has always been a contradiction. He’s all dedication and focus in the rink, and awkward uncertainty once his skates are off. It’s a combination that had fascinated Ilya in their early days—Shane’s capable self-assurance when they played against each other, contrasted against his willingness to let Ilya mold him like clay into the shape of his desire. He carries himself now like he’s as confident off the ice as on it, finally sure of himself. His fingers brush against Ilya’s in the sand without a glance to see who might be watching. He asks for Ilya’s room number as if it’s a foregone conclusion where they’ll end up tonight. Maybe it always has been.

  8. “You’re sick,” says Shane, albeit shakily because he isn’t sure about this. He isn’t sure about them, or what they are. He doesn’t know if he’s allowed to care or worry because he doesn’t know what to call them. There is no routine or rules. All he knows is he probably shouldn’t be calling the captain of another team, especially not in the locker room. He shuts his locker and grabs his bag. “You are obvious. Did you call me to say obvious things, like sky is blue? Or Montreal sucks. Or that you cry when you come?” It sounds like he’s smiling. Shane’s stomach swoops, tripping over itself in a swell of affection. He rubs his hand over his face, feeling disoriented by the flood of conflicting emotions. “Fuck you,” Shane snaps, habitually. or: ilya always texts shane before they play against each other, but today he doesn’t. shane, and all spectating eyes, can tell someone is off with boston’s captain.

  11. It starts with Shane running out of Ilya’s apartment after one too‑intimate moment over a tuna melt. He tries to bury it by dating Rose Landry, but the Montreal club night blows everything open jealousy, staring, avoidance, all of it. Rose eventually breaks up with him gently, seeing the truth he can’t say out loud. At the All‑Star Game, things shift from canon. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. Something cracks open. He thinks of Shane. He texts him. Does Shane remember the invitation? And does Ilya go?

  17. Shane comes home tired and in need of some serious care from his husband. Ilya is more than happy to give him what he needs. Just a very fluffy oneshot of them being soft and happy. Light smut and even lighter angst. There were many things about Shane that Ilya loved more than the air he breathed. He loved the way Shane’s freckles glowed when he blushed, and god did Ilya love making Shane blush. He loved the way Shane’s walnut colored eyes glossed over when Ilya took charge, whether they were in the bedroom or simply when Shane needed the release of giving himself up to his husband. Ilya loved when Shane’s head lay on his chest and he could smell the clean scent of Shane’s shampoo, his ink hair lightly tickling Ilya’s cheek. He would run his hands through it, scrape his nails down Shane’s nape and feel him completely and utterly melt into him. There were too many things Ilya loved about Shane to name, but there was one thing that his husband did that made Ilya feel like he would lose his mind. Now, Ilya knew Shane would never approve of him saying that he had an oral fixation, but Ilya didn’t really know what else to call it. Shane just liked having things in his mouth… all the time. Ever since Ilya had known Shane, his husband always seemed to have something in his mouth, or at least seemed to relax when he had things in his mouth. Whether it was a hoodie string, a straw, the collar of his t-shirt, his knuckle, or even his bottom lip. Shane just was always sucking or biting something. Ilya didn’t really think much of it at first. Well that wasn’t totally true, Ilya always thought it was hot when Shane had something in his mouth, especially when they were younger. It was hard to sit there and watch Shane chew and suck on a hoodie string when it could’ve been Ilya’s dick instead. And lord did Ilya love when Shane sucked his dick. Ever since their first time together, when Shane was inexperienced and desperate, he was so good. Shane was always so good, especially for Ilya. It was satisfying when Shane would simply drop to his knees without being asked, his hands burning against the backs of Ilya’s thighs as he took Ilya’s cock in his mouth like it was second nature, like he belonged there. He certainly acted like it. Ilya never realized how much Shane sucking him off was for Shane as much as it was for him. Ilya never really thought about it back then, he was selfish and took Shane for granted and Ilya regretted it with his whole soul. But as they grew and their relationship grew and they stopped being stupid about their feelings, Ilya started to truly notice all of Shane’s little mannerisms. Ilya saw how much Shane loved to be good. He loved praise, he loved reassurance, and he loved being told he did a good job. When Ilya took control, Shane was allowed to simply be Shane. He wasn’t Shane Hollander the hockey player, he was Ilya’s Shane. So when Shane came home from his game, sweaty and tired, his bag hitting their wooden floors with a thump, Ilya knew, even before he saw his husband, what he needed. Ilya had seen the game, and had seen how hard Shane pushed himself for them to win. Ilya knew that even though they won, Shane would need him. “Shane?” Ilya called from the living room, muting the tv and casually walking over to the front door where his husband was leaning against the wall as he toed off his shoes. Shane was wearing a simple white shirt and athletic sweats, his eyes droopy and tired and his hair sticking up in wild places. “Hey,” Shane greeted, exhaustion dripping into his voice as he pulled himself to stand upright, wobbling a little as he did so. Ilya went to his side, a hand resting heavy and comforting on the back of Shane’s neck. He brought Shane into his chest, his husband’s cheek pressed flush against his bare flesh. “You played so hard tonight,” Ilya murmured into Shane’s hair and he felt Shane’s body go limp into his own. He was already braced for it and easily took his husband’s weight. “You made everyone so proud, made me so proud. You deserve rest, lyubimyy,” he stroked a hand through Shane’s hair and kissed the top of his head. Shane’s arms came up limp and heavy to wrap around Ilya’s waist, his hands splayed across Ilya’s strong back. “How do you always seem to know what I need?” Shane mumbled, into Ilya’s pectoral, his lips warm and soft on Ilya’s skin.
