Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.

During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. Shane was pissed, he was so unbelievably angry at Rozanov for being so fucking fine about everything but also not texting him back for six whole months. Then just walking on stage at this stupid award show and acting all Rozanov.It pissed him off that Ilya had followed him into the bathroom too, even if that is what he was hoping for. It pissed him off that he had followed so quickly that Shane hadn’t even had the chance to check if they were alone before the Russian came in.

When Shane learns that Ilya's plane has crashed and he doesn't even know who Ilya's emergency contact is or if Ilya's alive, he has a stunning realization that Ilya dying without anyone knowing what they are to one another would be a torment.
Ilya is injured in the plane crash, Shane does a lot of coming out.
“I love you,” says Shane, “I love you so fucking much, Ilya. And when you’re less loopy, I think we need to talk about how the stupid plan doesn’t work anymore.”
Ilya’s mostly out of it by now, but he snorts, “Hollander wants to deviate from plan? Must be very serious for me, yes?”

The brush off Shane received when he suggested Ilya try medication was hardly surprising to him. What he found shocking was that he had actually done it. Without telling Shane, no less. And if that wasn't startling enough, finding out the entire hockey community knew because of one ill-timed picture Cliff Marlow took practically knocked him off balance.

“Who knew Rozanov would be the poster boy for Prozac?” Hayden muttered with a huff. “God, he’s gotta be floating on cloud nine with that dose. Normal people take like what, ten or twenty? Sixty must mean he was damn near suicidal.”“Probably,” JJ agreed, shrugging. “I wouldn’t know, I don’t need to medicate myself to cope with life.”
“If he’s all doped up, how come he’s still always such an asshole?” one of the rookies questioned, earning a few laughs.
Shane just felt sick to his stomach. And angry. At his team and Marlow and mostly at himself. Ilya had done exactly what he asked and now, he was getting mocked for taking care of himself. In what world was that fair?
“Maybe that’s why he’s so aggressive on the ice,” another theorized. “He's trying to kill himself and take another player with him to make it look like an accident.”
