Ilya knew sadness could kill, and it could do it quietly like it took his mother. So he stayed charming, desirable, and useful. He never asked for reassurance, didn’t get needy. He would never admit he needed Shane. Right?

Some nights, alone in another anonymous hotel room, Shane scrolls through old photos on his phone. His face rounder. His smile easier. He tries to remember what it felt like not to think about food at all. The memory feels fuzzy, distant, like something that happened to a different version of him. He wonders—briefly, dangerously—if Ilya would notice if he got worse. Not better. Not “healthier.” Worse.

“It’s one of your superstitions, right?” Hayden asked. “Like my hat. It’s your good luck shirt.” Shane felt a chill run down his spine. He hadn’t thought anyone would notice. In truth, he’d barely noticed himself. It wasn’t something he was actively doing. It wasn’t like his weight circuit or his diet or his night routine. It wasn’t meditation or yoga or cross-training. Those were all things he did with meticulous, painstaking purpose. This was just… this was something else. This wasn’t thought driven. If he was being honest, it barely had to do with hockey. It maybe was one of the only things in his life that didn’t have to do with hockey. If he was stressed, he wore the shirt and it made him feel a little bit better. It just so happened that most of the time he was stressed about something to do with hockey. That was it. It was just a feeling. A feeling of calm that came from Ilya Rozanov’s shirt. OR: Shane accidentally wore Ilya's shirt back to the hotel after it things started to feel Too Real. What if he kept the shirt? It’s not a cure for the weight on his chest right now, but this is exactly what Ilya needs. He silently strips down to his boxers and crawls in behind Shane. Anya picks her head up at the movement, and Ilya reaches over Shane to rub her back for a second before he wraps his arm around Shane’s waist. “Mm,” Shane hums, inhaling sharply as he wakes up. “You’re back.” - or, a sweet, sleepy moment between husbands

The puppy sniffed the hard plastic toe of Shane's skate, and then sat down squarely on his foot, as if claiming territory. “If we leave the dog,” Ilya said, “you will think about it all night. You will play like shit tomorrow. And then I will have to listen to you be sad about that for a week.” A defeated sound escaped Shane. “…Damn it.” After a secluded practice session, Shane and Ilya find a cold golden retriever in the middle of a snowstorm - and a sudden power outage. Shane does not spiral (he does). Ilya absolutely does not get jealous of a puppy (he does).

Hold On (I Still Want You) by velminort
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-11
Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called. Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough." And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up. *** They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time. “Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.” He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle. Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

Shane pulled out the vodka handle, wiping the dust off. He stared at it for a long moment. Shane rarely drank hard liquor. It made his head spin and his stomach uncomfortable, wasn’t worth all the extra calories. Wasn’t even really meant to drink on his meds, but. It would make him feel worse. It would make him feel like absolute shit. And that was exactly what Shane was counting on. So he had stumbled over to the bathroom, flipped on the dim overhead light, sunk to the bathroom floor, and drank. or: shane hollander gets super drunk on the bathroom floor after a really bad few days. it is not fun for anyone involved, but luckily ilya is there to pick up the pieces

shane hollander's guide to bottom prep by bisexualbuckley
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-11
Ilya shrugs and runs his hand from Shane’s waist down to his ass and back up. “But you are so good at it. What is English saying? Having it with science?” “Having it down to a science.” “Exactly. Some things come natural to you, yes? Doing your bottom prep stuff. Taking my cock. You are perfect bottom. Made to be bottom. You love to be bottom.” “I do. I love it.” Shane swallows, reminded of exactly where he is and what he’s doing, a cautiously confident smile on his face as he starts to ride more with his legs than his hips. “And you thought I would throw it all away for some Taco Bell.” OR; shane hollander's foolproof bottom prep routine and how his lovely boyfriend takes care of him

The cocky curl of his lips was all the confirmation Shane needed. You really did time it, you fucker. Ilya’s decisive goal came two point six seconds before the end of the game. Not accidentally. He did it to spite the Montreal Metros. Shane most of all. It was cruel. Ilya Rozanov, with his Russian pride and mannerisms was cruel. Except for the times when he came to Shane’s hotel room. Or when Shane went to his. It was insane how Ilya always changed behind closed doors. How his smile turned genuine, how the weight of expectations lifted from his shoulders, and only the sweet lust remained, cradling Shane in its attentive arms. Ilya on the ice, wearing the colours of his team, and Ilya in the bedroom, wearing nothing, were two different people. TL;DR: Fuck toxic masculinity, everyone is allowed to cry!

Something Great by lucy_in_the_sky

It’s not fair. Shane doesn’t want to be with Rose and Ilya doesn’t want to marry Svetlana, but it would be so much fucking easier if they did want to, so much less complicated and actually accepted both legally and by the public. Sure, gay marriage is now legal in both Canada and the States but that’s only the tip of their problem-iceberg. It sucks and it’s stupid and it’s not fair and Shane feels childish whining and drinking about it but it’s not. Fucking. Fair.

Ilya drops to his knees in front of him and Shane’s eyebrows just about jump off his face. “Ilya!” He hisses, but the other just starts working on taking off Shane’s shoes, and when his shoes are off his large fingers start working Shane’s calves, kneading and massaging the stiffness from the game out. Shane holds back his satisfied moan, Ilya’s fingers working wonders on his tense muscles but his eyes keep flicking between the door and the man on his knees in front of him. Or, after the All-Star game, Ilya helps Shane rest his muscles and ease his tensions.

What is hell? I maintain as follows: by doctorenterprise
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-10
Shane remembers Ilya telling him once that hell is the suffering of being unable to love anymore, and Shane hadn’t understood that then. He couldn’t imagine being unable to love, because they were freshly married and blindingly happy and there was no force in the world that could take it away. But Shane thinks he gets it now, as he thinks about that grey December afternoon and beautiful blond boy in a toque with no one to love and no one to love him. That’s hell, he thinks. That’s hell, and he can barely speak around the swell of emotion in his throat, around the grief he feels at having held Ilya’s young hand for only a moment, for how he can never go back and hold him like he deserves to be held. They’re out - they’ve been out - and Shane can hardly stand it sometimes, how fucking good it feels to see Ilya enter a crowded room and meet his eyes and not feel that cold shock of terror zip down his spine. How plainly he can show love on his face after a decade of closed doors and frantic, not-enough stolen moments and being too terrified to let even his phone know he loves Ilya Rozanov. How he can reach out and tangle fingers with the love of his life and this new world they live in doesn’t try to cave in, or make them leave it, or make them leave each other. It drives him out of his mind daily, thinking about the life they lived together - apart, too fucking apart - for nearly ten years. Sometimes he looks at the slope of Ilya’s shoulders peeking out of a dark cotton tank top on their couch or the point of his toes tapping Shane’s across the space between their chairs or the soft swirl of golden curls darkened in the shower they designed together. Sometimes he looks at those things and his chest wells so full of love he feels like he might burst. Sometimes he looks at those things and feels like he might burst, yeah, but it’s not what drives him crazy. What drives him crazy is the memory of baby-rounded cheeks outside a rink in the prairies in 2008, in the dead of a bitterly cold winter, his first look at the face that would wallpaper his twenties, his whole life. Pinked by the wind, softened by youth, eyes sharp with interest but not familiarity, not yet. Eyes so icy grey they could have been carved from the pavement beneath their feet. A cigarette dangling from lips Shane hasn’t felt yet, but thinks about for months after. It’s the cheeks, though, when he really considers it. Ilya’s eyes are the same, still that same ice-cold grey, but softened around the edges by love and warmth and being loved. His lips are the same too, still full and pink, and they still stick in Shane’s mind like a very lovely thorn, all these years later. The cheeks, though. Soft and round, like a child on the brink of manhood, pink from the wind and maybe a blush - although Shane knows, he’s heard it a thousand times, Russians do not blush, even though Shane’s seen it happen a hundred different ways. They’re different now, sharper and angled in a way that makes air stick in Shane’s chest every time the light catches Ilya’s perfect cheekbones just so. Shane knows the world looks at Ilya Rozanov, a study in curls and cheekbones and mouthwatering iliac furrows, and sees someone dangerous and hot. Shane looks and sees a mouth softened with warmth, a divot between pecs that holds the dangling gold remnants of the only other soul who ever loved Ilya more than Shane does now. He sees a scar low on a golden stomach where doctors took Ilya’s appendix three years ago while Shane waited alone and terrified in Ilya’s Boston penthouse, feeling like a bird in a cage he built for himself. He sees calloused feet, scarred and blistered and worth millions of dollars. And he sees those cheeks. Shane’s life is a montage, or a flipbook of all his greatest hits, all still life images of Ilya Rozanov’s beautiful face growing thinner and stronger and sharper with age right before Shane’s eyes. It drives him crazy. Sometimes he thinks he’s at peace with it all, the years that passed them by and the youth and time and fear they wasted. He doesn’t feel old, really. They’re both thirty-one, they both have many years of hockey and their life together ahead of them. But he thinks about those soft cheeks on Ilya’s seventeen year old face and he knows he will never forgive himself for the years he spent looking at Ilya as anything but the other half of his soul. What he wouldn’t give to go back, to stretch his hand out to the beautiful, pink-faced boy lighting a cigarette against the chill of a Saskatchewan wind in December and tell him he loves him. Too many years passed between that moment and their tearful, overdue profession of love at the cottage. Too many years where it was true and unsaid and only thought about with panic, or denial, or the desire for it to stop. Years ago, a gentle soul stood in the cold with no one to love him, and Shane didn’t fix it for far too long. It drives him crazy. It keeps him up at night, often, just like it does tonight. The house is dark, and Ilya is asleep beside him in their bed, one they’ve shared every single night for a year now - thank god, thank anyone, thank everyone - and Shane watches him like he still can’t believe it. He can’t, not in moments like this when Ilya is still and peaceful and relaxed in a way that makes Shane’s chest ache with love. It feels like a cosmic joke that Shane has ended up here, loved and in love, with someone who eases every ache that’s ever settled itself in his mind, heart, and body. He doesn’t feel special enough for a gift like this - he’s already been given

Shane grabs the mugs off the counter, his steps careful and measured to not spill as he makes his way outside. The outdoor air hits him hard, filling his lungs with the fresh breath of the trees, the lake, and the absence of his anxiety. He doesn't need it out here. Sitting on the dock, down the hill, exactly where Shane left him, is Ilya. He almost cannot see him in the glittering evening light– his silhouette outlined by the tendrils of the lingering sun. Shane steps forward, and lets the light guide him home. or– Shane finds his peace.

why are we always stuck and running from the bullets? by godlightilya
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-01-10
Right now, Ilya and Shane were running from the bullets that would probably catch up to them if they stopped. But Ilya wanted to stop running. He would take bullets to the chest a million times over if it kept Shane safe. He would stand in front of Shane and protect him from every bullet fired in their direction. He would take the hit because he knew how to deal with it. OR, Shane and Ilya can’t stop arguing over telling the world about their love. Ilya is scared of being outed. Shane is scared of what people might say.
