“Hollander?” a voice asks from deeper in the flat. It is decidedly not a girl’s voice. “Hollander, what is – oh.”
Yuna looks from her son to the person who has appeared behind his shoulder: Ilya Rozanov, naked except for a towel. Yuna’s eyebrows go back up as she looks from Rozanov back to Shane.
With a sigh that seems to deflate the tension in his body, Shane closes his eyes for a moment, and then finally steps aside. “Okay, maybe it’s best you do come inside.”
Yuna and David just mean to surprise their son before the season starts. Except Shane isn’t home alone – and his unexpected visitor turns out to have a problem that is right up Yuna’s alley. What would they have done without her? Probably something stupid, like pretended to get married.

That’s what does it, as Ilya knew it would. Shane rears back, spluttering, outraged, trying not to laugh.
“Oh, I have committed blasphemy now. They will take back my citizenship, big crime, very sad.”
Shane smoothes his hands along Ilya’s calves, rests his fingertips on Ilya’s ankles. “Fuck Wayne Gretzky,” he says. He looks like he can’t believe what he’s saying. Ilya wonders, distantly, if he can get it on tape to play back to himself when things feel particularly bleak. “We can live in exile together. I don’t care. You’re my, my best, my second best hockey player forever too.”

David forced a smile, “What helped me was- well”, David shrugged, looking a little embarrassed, “When Yuna started to court me again. She would do small things for me, buy me some new clothes, put on music that I liked- that one might not work for Shane. Rearrange our nest, buy new swaddles for Shane.” Or Ilya courts Shane after giving birth to their pup. Shane squirts.
