(Read: he stayed up for 15 hours taking every self assessment he could find, reading research papers on autism and scouring social media for posts from people like him who weren’t diagnosed until adulthood. It was hard to deny after that, that the doctor might have known what she was talking about.)

Shane gets in the car and slams the door shut. “What was that?” his dad asks, voice slightly worried. “Nothing,” Shane says unconvincingly, looking down at his hands, tearing at the skin around his fingernails. “Didn’t look like nothing, bud. It’s unlike you not to say bye to your friend like that. Or slam the door.” “Ilya Rozanov is not my friend, Dad.” *** Shane Hollander thinks he's ready for 8th grade. For the most part, he is. Enter: Ilya Rozanov. Shane is not ready for the way his life is about to change.

Get the fire out from the wire (I'd share a life and you'd share a life) by LoneswaggingRanger
Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-01-04
While Shane is out talking with his mom about his sexuality and her unquestionable acceptance, Ilya and his father are inside having a heart-to-heart of their own. Shane's father is so… nice. Easy, kind. Not constantly demanding that Ilya performs more, provides more, gives more, wins more, more, more, more— "So, uh." Shane's father cuts through the fog of Ilya's thoughts. "How do you feel about all of this?" What sort of question was that? "Uh, good, I guess." Ilya shrugs, before remembering that David's son is probably out there having a panic attack with his crying wife.

Yuna shot up. “The elevator!” she screamed in horror. “What?” David shuffled on the bed next to her, fumbling for his glasses on the nightstand. “Are you okay?” “He was there. In the elevator, when—” She broke off, startled by the sudden crash when David knocked over the clock from the nightstand, the sound of the shattering glass echoing loudly through their bedroom. Yuna wakes up the night after Shane and Ilya came out to them.

Across the Stars by Strange_johnlock
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-03
Ilya adjusts the blanket around Luna, shifts his gaze away from her sweet face and towards the sky. It is full of stars, bright here, far away from the city. Hundreds and thousands of them, and the same person who has placed the freckles on Shane Hollander’s cheeks and nose must have sprinkled them onto the firmament. “Ah, husband withdrawal makes me a romantic, I think,” he whispers, and Luna makes a sound that must surely mean she agrees, but thinks he has gone mad. ___ Ilya deals with Shane being away on his first road trip. The Hollanders are there to help. And Shane, well, he is full of surprises.

Anesthesia is a Blessing by cyrenae
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-03
“Wow… who is that handsome guy? Another nurse?” Shane giggled. “Hi handsome!” Ilya had to try everything in his power not to lose it. Thank god Yuna was filming this. This moment had to be treasured one way or another, and he was already looking forward to the moment Shane would see this once the anesthesia wore off. “Not a nurse. Your husband of 3 years, Ilya.” “Husband??” Shane almost got up excitingly, which led to the nurse having to calm him down a bit. “Oh my god nurse, I hit the jackpot! Look how handsome my husband is!”. Or: Shane gets in an accident on the ice and goes under for surgery. Ilya is absolutely unprepared once he wakes up.

Shane swallows the lump in his throat. “We need your help.” Yuna sounds slightly concerned, her voice tinny through the phone. “Is everything alright? Should we drive over?” “Yeah, um—we have a, uh. A—” “A baby,” Ilya finishes. “You are a grandmother now. Surprise.” “Sorry, did you—” Yuna pauses. They can hear David faintly in the background. “You mean, like, a baby animal? A puppy?” “A wishbaby,” Shane croaks. There’s silence on the other end of the line. “Surprise,” Ilya says again. Shane and Ilya win the Stanley Cup. They weren't exactly planning to also win a baby.

Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Ilya had not expected the way Shane's parents' cared for Shane to ever extend to him. Except, they kept trying to do exactly that. Shane said it was just them. Being them. So when they casually mentioned that he was family now… Ilya wanted to believe them. He did not know how to be in a family, though. He didn’t think his was ever functional enough to count as an experience of a real family. Could he count the years with just his mother? Were the two of them enough to make up a family? He wasn't sure. Ilya just knew, he did not want to get it wrong with Shane. Or Shane’s family. And so he had to go when they called.
