  1. “Why was the fucking balcony door open?”

“I had a cigarette,” Ilya admits in a guilty rush. “You don’t like the smoke. I was—trying to get it out before you came. And then you were here, and I—”

And then Shane was here, and any hope of thinking about absolutely anything else had vanished into the chill of the night air. But he can’t say this, can’t say that the world narrows to a fine point when Hollander enters a room, that Ilya can finally fucking get in air when all he has to do is touch Shane like breathing and not carry Cups and build legacies and grin and bear it for cameras and share a last name and an ankle-weight of a country with his father.

“Sorry,” Ilya tells him again, hating the way his voice trembles.

  2. Ilya has never been the jealous type. Not with Svetlana, or Sasha, or the women he's met on his pilgrimage around the MLH circuit in Canada, or the States. Not the ones in clubs under the streets of Moscow, St. Petersburg, anywhere else Sveta could drag his aching soul.

No, Ilya has never been the jealous type.

    Well. Other than with Shane.

Or: five times Ilya gets jealous (and one time Shane does, too).

  3. “You like this.” Ilya said more like a statement than a question.

    “Like what?”

“When I said that this is something serious.”

    Shane blushed and looked away.

Ilya gently grabbed Shane's chin and brought his face up to meet Ilya’s eyes.

    “I like it too.”

    OR

Shane and Ilya don’t hook up until a little later on in their story, but not for lack of trying or interest. When they do finally get together, things move faster and feelings are expressed sooner. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t difficult moments to overcome on the path to their happy ending.

This story is an exploration of a completely alternative timeline in the Hollanov love story—using a combination of the show and the original Heated Rivalry and Long Game books. There will be pining, yearning, big emotional moments, and angsty roadblocks. With, of course, a very happy ending for our boys.

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov got married in secret and for two whole years, they lived their life quietly.

    They broke apart quietly, too.

The worst part is that none of it feels right. Not their continued rivalry on the ice, not the divorce papers on Shane’s table, and definitely not the idea of saying goodbye. There are too many wounds untouched, too many things left unsaid, and too much love between them still.

  5. "You will bend for me many times, I think, before this production is over." Shane means to say no. He means to tell Ilya Rozanov—arrogant Bolshoi principal dancer and professional pain in his ass—to fuck off and stop moving set pieces without permission. Instead, he ends up on his knees in a dressing room, which is definitely not how the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s stage manager is supposed to handle conflict resolution. Three weeks until opening night. One impossible rivalry. And absolutely no way this ends well. or: Ilya comes to Winnipeg for The Nutcracker. Shane tries very hard to hate him. The mind- blowing hate-sex doesn’t help.

When a poorly timed phone call and an open window leads Shane's parents to a massive misunderstanding, he's stuck pretending he's still dating Rose. Which works fine for a month, until Ilya's jealousy starts to flare and Shane's parents witness a fight entirely different from the one they have on the ice.

"See? Shane's probably just in the kitchen,” Yuna murmured softly, putting her purse down on the side table beside the door. “Maybe he’s—”

“Okay, you were maybe telling me the truth,” a voice suddenly called, cutting her off before she could finish her sentence. “At least partially.”

Yuna frowned, the deep, accented voice catching her off guard. Before she could piece together where she recognized the voice from, though, she saw Ilya Rozanov walking through her son’s apartment. He was barefoot, his hair slightly damp and his clothes casual. Sweatpants and a white T-shirt that clung to him after a shower.

From the kitchen, David heard his sons’ voice ring out, too. “What do you mean partially?” Shane responded, gesturing at his phone as Ilya showed him something on it. “That’s exactly what I told you.”

  8. “Hollander, you’re hot,” he says, blinking.

“You’re not so bad yourself,” he replies, chasing his lips.

When they kiss, Ilya feels the temperature of his mouth against his, the heat of his breath, how wet his forehead is. He pulls back, frowning.

    “No, you’re too hot. Sick.”

  9. Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is. On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone. Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

  11. The Montreal vs. Boston rivalry is a thing of legend.

Only Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov know what lives underneath it.

When someone calling themselves The Loon begins leaving cryptic and threatening messages, Shane and Ilya understand two things:

    Someone knows.

And they cannot ask for help without explaining why.

The Loon believes something sacred has been corrupted.

    They intend to correct it.

  19. Odd-Man Rush: The situation that occurs when a team enters the attacking zone and outnumbers the opposing players in the zone.

    Or,

Shane doesn’t know why he still feels so off-kilter. He should be the happiest he’s ever been—he won the Cup, he feels like he’s maybe starting to have a few friends on his team, and he’s finally starting to believe his parents when they tell him he won’t get traded again. He should be on top of the world, but sometimes he still feels like the lone defender on an odd-man rush, skating as fast as he can to prevent what feels like an inevitable outcome.

The problem is that he’s not quite sure which outcome it is that he’s trying to stop.

  20. Two days.

Shane and Rozanov filming together, surrounded by the CCM filming and design team, none of them aware that their star rivals were secretly fucking every chance they could. That every game the world saw them go head-to-head in was only foreplay, leading to apartments and hotel rooms. That the heated rivalry between them was inching further and further away from rivalry, and toward something entirely different.

Two days in sunny, perfect Florida.

Or, a joint CCM shoot set in sunny, perfect Florida gets derailed by a natural disaster, and Shane and Ilya are forced to spend actual time together, forced to imagine a future. They find that it’s quite impossible to reason with hurricane season, but that the effects are better than they could have hoped for.
