JJ slips an arm over his shoulders then, knocking Shane off centre. “Why do you look so serious?,” he pokes at Shane’s side. Because I have a tramp stamp that says my ass is property of the other team’s captain, is not something Shane can say out loud, so he just goes with, “Raiders home game, you know? Feeling the pressure.” JJ nods seriously, “yes, lots riding on this. Rozanov is just ahead of you in goals this season, yes?” “For now,” Shane mutters. “You will not let him finish first,” JJ declares, clapping him on the back when they reach their locker room. He never does, Shane thinks. / Shane gets drunk, and gets a tattoo. Ilya gets turned on.

“Are you the boyfriend I’ve heard so much about? I was about wondering when we’d be seeing you!” Ilya’s breath catches in his chest, and his lungs feel deflated as he rushes to correct her. To explain himself, or to excuse himself. He manages a weak, “I— uh, no I—“ The nurse schools her expression, gives him a once over, and gets a look on her face like she has come to an understanding on the situation at hand. Ilya can almost guarantee that whatever she has come up with in her head, she is probably very wrong. — basically my take on the hospital scene idk shane can’t keep his mouth shut off the perc 50s

Shane catches a cold and Ilya makes him a tea. The hotel’s carpet, patterned in a taste Ilya found offensive, carried him toward the end of the hall. With each quiet step, the knot in his chest cinched tighter. Excitement tangled with trepidation, the need to touch Shane pressing harder than the fear that this time, the door would remain closed. Perhaps Hollander had already written off their handful of hurried meetings as a fluke. A mistake. But this was Boston. His hometown. And Ilya had already been lucky once tonight. A five–three win, an additional two goals on his record-breaking season. Midnight had only just passed; maybe the day still owed him one more kindness. When he reached the room number Hollander had reluctantly given him in passing, murmuring in the hallway behind the rink before the game, Ilya paused. He glanced over his shoulder, down the empty corridor, confirming no one would witness him slipping into his competition’s room. Then, with a staccato drum beating beneath his battered ribs, he raised his hand and rapped his knuckles against the door. Time slowed to a near halt as he waited, restlessly tapping his foot against the floor for any shuffle behind the door. Nothing came. He knocked again, harder. Most of the Metros were likely out drowning Boston’s nightlife, but Ilya was certain Hollander wasn’t among them. There was a long list of things he still didn’t know about him, but one truth had surfaced early: number twenty-four wasn’t a fan of parties, or drinking, or dancing. Boring, Ilya had declared at the time, unwilling to admit he’d found the abstinence quietly endearing. It was rare, after all, for a man in his early twenties, at the prime of his life, blessed with a generous salary and a face most people recognized, to spend his nights watching juvenile YouTube videos and sipping Ginger Ale alone in a hotel room. He lifted his hand to knock a third time. The soft vibration in his jeans pocket stopped him. Can’t happen tonight. Sorry. Disappointment bloomed bitter on his tongue. He swallowed it down, refusing to give it room to linger. So that was it. Their fling, short-lived, messy, clumsy, infuriatingly fun, was over Even as Ilya tried to accept the truth of it, his hand betrayed him, knocking anyway. At the faint rustle of bedsheets behind the door, he tugged out his phone and typed a quick reply. I know you’re there. Open up, Hollander. Somewhere inside the room, he heard a humorless sound bleed through the silence. Half a laugh, half a breath. Then, a cough. It sounded hollow, dry. Another text. Go away, Rosanov. Ilya’s determination was fierce, an unstoppable force. It was what had carried him this far, onto Boston’s starting line, into the life he’d dreamed of as an eight-year-old with a pair of used skates and only the roughest grasp of English. That same tenacity refused to let him walk away now. He sighed, dragging a hand through his brown curls as he weighed his next move. Someone’s going to see me. It wasn’t dignified, dangling the threat of exposure over Hollander’s head. Rumors would spread fast if he were found loitering outside a competitor’s hotel room in the dead of night, and they’d damn Ilya just as thoroughly as they would Hollander. Still, when it worked, satisfaction curled warm in his chest. The deadbolt slid free, and the sound sparked low in his stomach. “Get in,” Hollander rasped. “Now, you idiot.” “So excited to see me,” Ilya teased, slipping through the narrow opening and pulling the door shut behind him. The television was the room’s only light, its flicker casting long shadows over the rumpled sheets and a small pile of Kleenex on the nightstand. Ilya’s gaze snagged there, drifted to a bottle of NyQuil, then lifted back to Hollander. Red nose. Swollen eyes. Instinctively, he stepped back. “You’re sick.” “You think I was playing like shit for fun?” Hollander snapped, though the bite didn’t land. Whatever fire he’d burned on the ice was gone now. The man in front of him was spent, shirtless and damp with sweat, trousers hanging low and wrinkled on his hips, exhaustion etched into every line. Still, Ilya’s attention lingered. He couldn’t help noticing the shape of his bare arms, remembering the way those fingers had slid up his chest, over his cheek, through his hair. “Not worse than usual,” Ilya shrugged, resisting a smile when Hollander rolled his eyes. “Fuck off,” Hollander muttered. Their usual banter fell flat when every word cost him something, when his limbs dragged as he turned back toward the bed and nearly collapsed onto the edge of the mattress. “You want to get sick too? You’ve got a game tomorrow.” “I am Russian,” Ilya said simply. “Russians do not get sick.”

Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov both need one thing to live their dreams of playing for the NHL: a mating bite. Shane's an omega, and the League doesn't allow unmated omegas to play hockey. Ilya's a Russian alpha, who needs a mate to get a U.S. visa. Their slightly harebrained solution? Bite each other, and let the unfinished bond fade. After five years of stupid texts, awkward heat-care packages, and dancing around their feelings, the bond still hasn't faded and ignoring it has become impossible—something's got to give. -- Contains spoilers for those who have only watched the show, and for The Long Game. A/B/O AU that very loosely follows canon. Happy ending!

Ilya leaned down and pressed an almost chaste kiss to Shane’s lips. “Stay.” Shane dutifully stayed still on the bed as Ilya went to the other side of the room, rummaging in the drawer for longer than usual. Shane fought the urge to turn and see what Ilya was doing until the other man came back, crouching down in front of him. He was holding lube, a condom, and–to Shane’s surprise–the pair of leather handcuffs that usually sat in the back corner of their drawer. They didn’t use the cuffs often, maybe a handful of times ever. Shane didn’t usually like not being able to touch Ilya. But Shane felt something warm and eager stir inside of him. He wanted Ilya to make the choices tonight. He was tired of thinking. Shane has a lot on his mind. Ilya gets a few things off it. Shane frowned at the pot of rice as the water splashed out cloudy again. He wasn’t counting how many times he washed it, but Ilya was stirring the saucepan on the stove, and the rice wasn’t going to be ready at the same time. Shane had been moving slowly, distracted. He turned on the tap again. At the same time, his phone buzzed in his pocket. The Rolex rep, confirming what time the shoot was tomorrow. Or his mom. Or Hayden, or JJ, or someone else wanting to talk about the shitshow last night. He swirled his fingers through the rice grains impatiently and poured the water out again. It ran clear enough. Buzz. Tap back on, cold water up to the joint of his finger. Buzz. Three texts meant it was probably Hayden. Shane didn’t want to talk about the game. If the Rolex rep hadn’t sent the time yet, he didn’t know how early he was getting up in the morning. They couldn’t shoot too late, because Shane had to be back at the rink for video review, which was going to suck. Theriault was pissed. He set the pot back into the rice cooker, closed the lid, and frowned again. Nothing happened. He pushed a button, but nothing lit up. “Fuck,” he muttered. “Piece of-” “Shane.” Ilya put his hand on top of Shane’s gently. His tone it wasn’t the first time Ilya had called his name. “Is not plugged in.” Shane took a deep breath. “What’s going on?” “Nothing. I’m just distracted.” Ilya’s hand trailed up Shane’s arm, and Shane turned a little to face him. Ilya brushed his fingertips across Shane’s temple. “Where are you?” Shane leaned into the touch and Ilya flattened his hand against Shane’s cheek. Shane closed his eyes. “Pittsburgh.” “Pittsburgh sucks. Montreal is much nicer.” Shane let out a little huff. “You didn’t get shut out by them.” “No. But half your team has the flu.” “I don’t have the flu. I played like shit.” “Ah, and hockey is individual sport, yes? You can do everything by yourself?” Shane turned his head and pressed a gentle kiss to the palm of Ilya’s hand instead of responding. He let out another deep breath. “Shane. Sit. I will finish dinner.” Shane didn’t feel like arguing. “Okay,” he mumbled into Ilya’s palm. Ilya took his hand away, and Shane missed it immediately. “And give me your phone.” “Why?” Shane was already handing it over. “Because you will look at it and be more stressed.” Ilya slid Shane’s phone into his pocket. “Sit.” Shane wandered into the living room and sat on the couch. He looked around, picked up the book on the end table he had been ignoring for weeks, and stared blankly at a page until Ilya came back in with two bowls. Shane ate listlessly. When they were done, Ilya pulled him back against his chest and Shane let himself relax a little into the other man’s arms. They stayed like that for a while, Ilya’s breath soft against the top of Shane’s head and his arms strong around him. “You are stressed,” Ilya said into his hair eventually. “Very observant,” Shane said quietly, no real bite to it. “Mmm. Nothing gets by me. Like Pittsburgh goalie.” Shane turned to complain, but Ilya kissed him gently. “Still. You are very stressed lately. You are thinking too much.” “I’m sorry. We haven’t seen each other in weeks, and I’m-” Shane gestured with one hand, and Ilya caught it in his firm grasp. “No apologizing. Come to bed. You need to relax.” Shane reluctantly stood up from Ilya’s embrace. “The dishes first.” “Yes, yes, dishes. Then bed.” Ilya had already loaded most of the dishes into the dishwasher. Shane rearranged them properly and slotted their bowls and forks in. Ilya kissed him again as soon as they made it into the bedroom, backing Shane up until the bed hit the back of his knees. They stayed like that for a while, kissing gently and then deeply, until Ilya pulled back and his eyes searched over Shane’s face. Shane made a frustrated little sound and leaned back towards him, but Ilya put his hands on Shane’s shoulders and guided him down to sit on the bed. “You are thinking too much. Let me make your brain quiet, yes?” Ilya said. His voice was even, but Shane could see he was half-hard in his sweatpants. Shane was almost embarrassed at how quickly he nodded. He didn’t want to think anymore. His whole body, tired and tense, craved Ilya. “Only one bed, hm?” Ilya said, looking at Shane with raised eyebrows and a smug grin spreading across his lips. “What was I supposed to tell my parents? ‘Hey, this is my boyfriend, and I’m super excited to bring him around over Christmas, but we need separate rooms to sleep in.’ They’re supposed to believe that we’re like, grossly in love, or whatever.” Or: Shane needs a fake date to the Hollander family's Christmas celebrations to get his parents off his back about his love life. Ilya fucking Rozanov is very likely the worst possible person to play Shane's fake boyfriend. Except, Ilya is kind of convincing...

Like with everything, on the ice it was simple—he wanted to win, he wanted to beat Ilya. He was his fiercest competitor and his equal. Off the ice, that faded away—for him, at least. Ilya always saw him as an equal, even when they were too young and dumb to admit it. But for Shane, when the skates were off and cotton sheets were beneath him, he didn’t want to be Ilya’s equal. He wanted to belong to him. It was why the briefest touch was enough to make him fall to his knees. It was why he’d beg just to see his cock—to touch it—to taste it. Desperate to take anything Ilya would give him, and too shy to ask for it. Because what right did he have to ask Ilya Rozanov for anything? No, he had to earn it with his words and tears and tongue. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“When did you start feeling like this?” she asks. “It started in Detroit in December, last year.” “Do anything out of the ordinary then?” “No, I do not—” he comes to a complete stop, and Ash walks ahead of him for a few steps before turning. “What? What is it?” The picture swirls in front of him like vibrant water colours splashing on a canvas. Cliff beckons him over to where he and Victor are perched on their bikes, and Victor holds his phone out to him. The headline is clear: Is Rose Landry dating MLH star Shane Hollander? A pit forms in Ilya’s stomach, cramping uncomfortably as if carved with a rusted knife, and distantly he recalls feeling the same way back in December. There is no fucking way that’s been the problem. •— or, hot off the press from my tl after episode 4: ‘ilya is the first alpha to go through rejection sickness’
