He'd made it halfway through writing the first note before it felt suddenly far too pathetic. Was this seriously the legacy he wanted to leave behind? No one would talk about any of his wins if he killed himself now. He would be the failed Russian team captain of the 2014 Olympics who couldn't handle the job and offed himself about it. His father would probably follow him in death just to yell at him for embarrassing the family, and Russia, and everyone who had ever rooted for him.

And when he had been made captain in Boston, he had promised his Bears he would get them a cup. He couldn't just leave without doing that. Didn't want to leave and let people think he was a liar, or that he just gave up when things got hard, lazy, useless, stupid boy.

He tore up the note he'd begun, and began his second plan instead.

And oh, Ilya was a weak, weak man. Because Shane had clearly gotten the wrong advice from someone along the line. And as his RA, his mentor and guide in the first year of Shane's college career, he was meant to correct that. Steer his charge clear of such horrible, terrible ideas as asking their “straight” RA to teach them how to kiss behind their boyfriend's back. Say no, malysh, you really don't need to worry about this, your first kiss should be with someone you love and trust and really want to kiss. “Okay,” he said, instead, and thought that at least he wasn't going to be sent back to Russia. He was going to be sent straight to hell.

Jane: We didn't even kiss. The words stare back at him. They fucking taunt him, the same way Ilya does with that wink of his, with his smirk and his deep voice. Abruptly, Shane feels pissed off and a little like he’s grasping for something that’s slipping away. He feels the way he did in that bathroom, the first time he had Ilya’s attention for months and didn’t want to let Ilya escape without stealing more of it. The elevator door opens. Shane does not get off. Instead, he presses the button for Penthouse 1 and hits send on We didn’t even kiss. He watches the floor numbers increase as the elevator carries him back to Ilya. Shane has no idea what he’s going to say to the asshole but he knows he has so many words that are about to burst out of his mouth. Fuck you being the first two. OR Shane goes back for that kiss.
