Ilya’s heart jumps straight into his throat. For a second, he just stares, watching as Shane reaches past him to press his floor before settling beside him. It’s Anya who breaks the moment. She springs up onto her hind legs, tail wagging furiously, tugging hard at her leash toward him.
“Anya,” Ilya warns, dragging his eyes away, gently pulling her back. “Stop.”
“It’s okay,” Shane laughs softly, already crouching down, his hand reaching out without hesitation. “She’s so cute.”
“Yeah,” Ilya mutters, something sharp and irrational flickering in his chest as he watches Shane give her all his attention. After a week of not seeing him, he selfishly wants it all to himself. “She is a menace though.”
“I believe it,” Shane says with a chuckle, standing again just as the elevator begins to rise.

“It’s nothing for you to worry about,” he says, right before he drops the news. Family dinner: pasta with vodka sauce, roasted broccoli, a tower of garlic bread stacked just as high as ever, even though Ilya, retired now, no longer has the appetite he once had. Usually, he still manages to put most of it away, even if it means he ends up groaning on the coach afterwards, begging Shane to rub his belly. Shane rolls his eyes, but he always does it, if only for the happy little sighs Ilya makes, like a fat house cat.

When Shane was outed half-an-hour before the NHL Draft, he thought it would be the worst day of his life. Every year Shane always drove past their local pumpkin patch wondering if they were worth the hassle of going out into the patch to pick your own pumpkin. Pumpkin carving alone sounded like an entire sensory nightmare and going out into a patch full of plants sounded just as bad. He really didn't have a want to do it growing up, too busy with hockey but now he had a pup of his own and she needed to have a variety of experiences in her little life — according to his mom that was one of the things she wanted to do very badly with him but the first time they carved a pumpkin as a family, baby Shane (around a year old) cried, screamed and wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Shane didn't want Sofia to be afraid and Ilya had been begging to go to one ever since Harris mentioned them at practice earlier that week. Or the one where they take Sofia to a pumpkin patch.

It is soft, and Shane leans into the touch, eyes closing briefly as if the contact alone is enough to ground him. The response is so natural that it gives Ilya pause. “Tell me about your limits.” Ilya doubts he is going to be close to any limits tonight, as Shane looks like he already had a pretty rough night. But he still needs to ask, good hygiene. A small smile appears on Shane’s face, he looks at Ilya deeply, eyes not wandering away as he speaks, “There are no limit, sir.” He looks at the disbelief appearing on Ilya’s face and offers, “I’m the house slave.” Or, Ilya didn’t come for attachment, but Shane, bruised, obedient, and unraveling, becomes the one thing he can’t leave broken.
