  2. Some nights, alone in another anonymous hotel room, Shane scrolls through old photos on his phone. His face rounder. His smile easier. He tries to remember what it felt like not to think about food at all. The memory feels fuzzy, distant, like something that happened to a different version of him. He wonders—briefly, dangerously—if Ilya would notice if he got worse. Not better. Not “healthier.” Worse.

Shane nearly stops himself right there, runs through all of the ways he could navigate away from the question, but when he opens his mouth it comes right out anyway. "Was he hard on you too?" Or Ilya had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. He just hadn’t expected it to be about this, hadn’t expected, or maybe simply refused to accept, that his father would somehow still hurt him beyond the grave, that the punches and split lips and broken ribs would still, impossibly, ache within him after all this time. or Shane tries to talk to Ilya about his past. It doesn't go as planned.

  6. “It’s one of your superstitions, right?” Hayden asked. “Like my hat. It’s your good luck shirt.” Shane felt a chill run down his spine. He hadn’t thought anyone would notice. In truth, he’d barely noticed himself. It wasn’t something he was actively doing. It wasn’t like his weight circuit or his diet or his night routine. It wasn’t meditation or yoga or cross-training. Those were all things he did with meticulous, painstaking purpose. This was just… this was something else. This wasn’t thought driven. If he was being honest, it barely had to do with hockey. It maybe was one of the only things in his life that didn’t have to do with hockey. If he was stressed, he wore the shirt and it made him feel a little bit better. It just so happened that most of the time he was stressed about something to do with hockey. That was it. It was just a feeling. A feeling of calm that came from Ilya Rozanov’s shirt. OR: Shane accidentally wore Ilya's shirt back to the hotel after it things started to feel Too Real. What if he kept the shirt? 8. Ilya shifted the conversation to his upcoming game against Boston, promising to send Svetlana the details of the post-game bar the team decided to visit that night. Shane listened halfheartedly, his own mind working too hard to focus fully on the conversation happening around him. He was so used to being on the other side of the conflict, the side that Ilya resided in now. He thought of the dinners assuring his friends of Ilya’s tender heartedness hidden behind blunt humor amidst gentle scolding and good natured laughter. His stomach twisted, wondering if Ilya felt a similar way when he just couldn’t click with Shane’s friends off the bat. In the past he had little trouble getting along with others, but every time Svetlana’s gaze shifted to him he felt the weight of her judgement. or, A year into playing for Ottawa, Ilya introduces Shane to Svetlana. When he's hospitalized a week later, the two form an unexpected bond waiting for him to wake up.

  10. “Can dogs even get colds from humans?” Bood asks. A couple of players murmur but nobody seems to have an answer. “Maybe she’s pregnant,” Troy unhelpfully supplies and Shane physically braces himself for his husband’s reaction. “Pregnant?” is Ilya’s incredulous reply from across the ice. At this point, they’re not practicing at all anymore; everyone is much more interested in hearing out Anya’s supposed illness and even Coach Wiebe has joined the huddle. Shane and Ilya's dog, Anya, is sick. The Centaurs hold an intervention.

  11. Shane is prepared for it, of course. After a million analyses, one thing is clear: following Rozanov’s lead in the first part of the game gives him the best chance of winning. So. That's what he does—he follows, and he hides a quiet grin in the collar of not his hoodie, seeing Rozanov furrowing his brows as he analyses Shane's movements with brutal ferocity, probably wondering why Shane is playing so passively. Child chess prodigies Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov grow into being grandmasters. Their rivalry grows during chess tournaments and also makes them feel something more, especially since Rozanov somehow can quieten Shane's anxiety.

  13. “Do not worry,” Ilya breathed against his lips. As if Shane had a choice in the matter. As if worry hadn’t kept Shane awake past midnight for weeks, as if he wasn’t scared to leave the house for too long in case Ilya did something stupid in his absence. He’d promised he wouldn’t. Several times over. Shane wanted to believe him, he did, but the worse Ilya’s depression got the more hollow the promise felt. “I always worry about you,” Shane said softly, pushing Ilya’s hair back from his forehead.

  14. When he does wake up the lights are off and Ilya’s chest is against his back and Shane knows without even having to look at his phone that he probably should’ve left hours ago. He checks anyway, just in case it’s somehow only around midnight. 2.47am. Great. “Ugh.” He screws his eyes shut for a beat and drops his phone back on the nightstand. The sound of it makes Ilya jump behind him and he spares a moment to feel guilty for waking him up. “Why didn’t you wake me, asshole?” It comes out more like a whine than an actual accusation and Ilya mutters something behind him before rolling onto his back. Shane misses his warmth immediately. “What can I say, Hollander? I wore you out. Thought I should let you rest, huh.” * Every time Shane and Ilya accidentally spent the night together.

  16. They lie in silence for a few moments, the only sound being the steady and slow beating of Shane’s heart on the monitor. He’s perfectly content to just bask in Ilya’s presence and form until the doctor comes back, but eventually, he can feel Ilya staring at him. So he opens his eyes and sees an expectant look on his husband’s face.

    “What?” Shane questions.

“Are we going to talk about it?”

Shane’s brows draw down in confusion. “Talk about what?”

A mischievous grin splits Ilya’s face. “That I am your emergency contact.”

“Oh, my god,” Shane groans. “You are not going to make this a thing. It’s not a big deal.”

  17. “Do story time, pease” Irina says with a sleepy pout, and Shane could hear Jackie’s soft “aww”. He smiles as he watches Ilya’s gaze soften, staring at his daughter for a moment before nodding once. ‘Story time’ referred to Irina’s nightly bedtime story; she usually needed at least 2 books read with the occasional scene getting acted out before she could fall asleep. Hayden is usually the only other person Irina allows to do story time, enjoying how he changes his voice for each character, so Shane knows this is a big deal. “Once again I am betrayed” Hayden grumbles and Shane pats his shoulder in sympathy before walking down the corridor. He hears Ilya following him and can’t help the fluttering in his chest. Shane and Irina’s lives were never going to be the same again. He can’t remember the last time he was this happy. - How the rest of the night went when Ilya and Shane reunited after 5 years.

  20. Shane remembers Ilya telling him once that hell is the suffering of being unable to love anymore, and Shane hadn’t understood that then. He couldn’t imagine being unable to love, because they were freshly married and blindingly happy and there was no force in the world that could take it away. But Shane thinks he gets it now, as he thinks about that grey December afternoon and beautiful blond boy in a toque with no one to love and no one to love him. That’s hell, he thinks. That’s hell, and he can barely speak around the swell of emotion in his throat, around the grief he feels at having held Ilya’s young hand for only a moment, for how he can never go back and hold him like he deserves to be held. They’re out - they’ve been out - and Shane can hardly stand it sometimes, how fucking good it feels to see Ilya enter a crowded room and meet his eyes and not feel that cold shock of terror zip down his spine. How plainly he can show love on his face after a decade of closed doors and frantic, not-enough stolen moments and being too terrified to let even his phone know he loves Ilya Rozanov. How he can reach out and tangle fingers with the love of his life and this new world they live in doesn’t try to cave in, or make them leave it, or make them leave each other. It drives him out of his mind daily, thinking about the life they lived together - apart, too fucking apart - for nearly ten years. Sometimes he looks at the slope of Ilya’s shoulders peeking out of a dark cotton tank top on their couch or the point of his toes tapping Shane’s across the space between their chairs or the soft swirl of golden curls darkened in the shower they designed together. Sometimes he looks at those things and his chest wells so full of love he feels like he might burst. Sometimes he looks at those things and feels like he might burst, yeah, but it’s not what drives him crazy. What drives him crazy is the memory of baby-rounded cheeks outside a rink in the prairies in 2008, in the dead of a bitterly cold winter, his first look at the face that would wallpaper his twenties, his whole life. Pinked by the wind, softened by youth, eyes sharp with interest but not familiarity, not yet. Eyes so icy grey they could have been carved from the pavement beneath their feet. A cigarette dangling from lips Shane hasn’t felt yet, but thinks about for months after. It’s the cheeks, though, when he really considers it. Ilya’s eyes are the same, still that same ice-cold grey, but softened around the edges by love and warmth and being loved. His lips are the same too, still full and pink, and they still stick in Shane’s mind like a very lovely thorn, all these years later. The cheeks, though. Soft and round, like a child on the brink of manhood, pink from the wind and maybe a blush - although Shane knows, he’s heard it a thousand times, Russians do not blush, even though Shane’s seen it happen a hundred different ways. They’re different now, sharper and angled in a way that makes air stick in Shane’s chest every time the light catches Ilya’s perfect cheekbones just so. Shane knows the world looks at Ilya Rozanov, a study in curls and cheekbones and mouthwatering iliac furrows, and sees someone dangerous and hot. Shane looks and sees a mouth softened with warmth, a divot between pecs that holds the dangling gold remnants of the only other soul who ever loved Ilya more than Shane does now. He sees a scar low on a golden stomach where doctors took Ilya’s appendix three years ago while Shane waited alone and terrified in Ilya’s Boston penthouse, feeling like a bird in a cage he built for himself. He sees calloused feet, scarred and blistered and worth millions of dollars. And he sees those cheeks. Shane’s life is a montage, or a flipbook of all his greatest hits, all still life images of Ilya Rozanov’s beautiful face growing thinner and stronger and sharper with age right before Shane’s eyes. It drives him crazy. Sometimes he thinks he’s at peace with it all, the years that passed them by and the youth and time and fear they wasted. He doesn’t feel old, really. They’re both thirty-one, they both have many years of hockey and their life together ahead of them. But he thinks about those soft cheeks on Ilya’s seventeen year old face and he knows he will never forgive himself for the years he spent looking at Ilya as anything but the other half of his soul. What he wouldn’t give to go back, to stretch his hand out to the beautiful, pink-faced boy lighting a cigarette against the chill of a Saskatchewan wind in December and tell him he loves him. Too many years passed between that moment and their tearful, overdue profession of love at the cottage. Too many years where it was true and unsaid and only thought about with panic, or denial, or the desire for it to stop. Years ago, a gentle soul stood in the cold with no one to love him, and Shane didn’t fix it for far too long. It drives him crazy. It keeps him up at night, often, just like it does tonight. The house is dark, and Ilya is asleep beside him in their bed, one they’ve shared every single night for a year now - thank god, thank anyone, thank everyone - and Shane watches him like he still can’t believe it. He can’t, not in moments like this when Ilya is still and peaceful and relaxed in a way that makes Shane’s chest ache with love. It feels like a cosmic joke that Shane has ended up here, loved and in love, with someone who eases every ache that’s ever settled itself in his mind, heart, and body. He doesn’t feel special enough for a gift like this - he’s already been given
