“Ilya,” Shane says, slurring just slightly, eyes glassy and bright. “Did you know-“ he giggles, actually giggles, shoulders shaking, “-that you are very handsome?” “Yes, I am aware,” Ilya grins widely as he steadies Shane by the waist, fingers firm and familiar at his side. Shane turns suddenly, interrupting a conversation between a handful of players and executives who absolutely did not ask to be included. “Hello. This is my husband,” he announces proudly, like it’s breaking news. “He’s Russian. And annoying. And very in love with me.” *** Shane Hollander wins ‘Player of the Year’ and celebrates with his husband, Ilya Rozanov. Shane drinks a little too much, but thankfully, Ilya is glued to his side.

With Eleanor on Ilya’s shoulders, he skates over to Shane. “Delivery,” he says, removing Eleanor from his shoulders and placing her on the boards. Her skates clack against the plastic. “One little girl for you.” Shane leans forward and kisses her on the cheek. “You are such a good skater,” he says, unclipping her helmet and brushing her hair off of her forehead. “You’re better than Papa is.” “Better than Daddy, too,” Ilya says with a smirk __________________ Shane and Ilya attend their first Centaurs Family Day with their daughter.

When he played for Montreal, the other guys on the team would often give him weird looks. He knew he wasn't great at making friends but he also didn't think it was necessary to be friends with everyone on the team. Still, it hurt how hostile some of them got over Shane's strict routines. Some even commented about his "psycho behaviour" but usually Hayden would make them shut up. Only when Shane was having panic attacks, the others would be more aggressive about it. They weren't worried about Shane, all they seemed to care about was that he was different. ~ or: Shane's experience with being autistic through his life. And finding peace with it!

“I’m sorry, what's going on?” Shane asked. “I am presenting,” Ilya said, reaching for the envelope in Shane’s hands. Shane pulled his arm back before Ilya could snatch it. “No,” Shane said with a laugh, “I’m pretty sure I am.” Ilya sighed in frustration, rolling his eyes as he pulled a folded sheet of paper from his pocket. “Look at the schedule!” He pointed dramatically. “Hollander–Rozanov!” “Uh, no,” Shane said, putting his finger to the page. “It says Hollander–Rozanov.” - Years after Vegas and after coming out, Shane and Ilya are asked to present at the NHL Awards again. "Is okay now?" Shane swallows and nods. "Yeah, I think. I'm probably worrying for nothing." Ilya nods too. "Yes. You are very good at that." Shane punches him in the shoulder lightly and they smile at each other. or, Shane and Ilya's first barbeque as a married couple playing on the same team. Shane is totally fine. After another last look into the mirror, Shane sighs and calls out to his husband. "Ilya! We have to leave in a few minutes. Are you still getting ready?" Anya comes into the room and Shane kneels down to pet her. "It'll be fine, right?" he whispers to her and she answers by licking his face. "Thanks girl" Shane winces and goes to wash his face at the sink. He dries his hands with a towel and wants to call out to Ilya again when the man in question appeares in the doorway, looking so handsome that Shane almost wants to suggest that they just stay home tonight. But he couldn't do that, because tonight was important. The first barbeque at Bood's house that they would be attending together. As a married couple and players on the same team. Shane totally wasn't freaking out or anything. "Finally" he says and Ilya frowns. "Relax, Hollander. If we leave now, we will be 15 minutes early still." "I just don't want to be late." "Is okay. I am late often. They don't care. Many people to care about even without us." "But I care, okay? So can we just leave now, please" Shane pleads and Ilya looks at him with that searching look in his eyes that tells Shane that Ilya won't let this go anytime soon. "Come here first" Ilya opens his arms and Shane sighs again, knowing that they won't leave before they've talked about this. He steps forward, right into Ilyas arms and hugs him tightly. Ilya's arms wrap around him and Shane's brain immediately quiets down a little bit. It's really unfair that Ilya has that affect on him. "I know you're nervous" Ilya says against his ear and Shane huffs. "No, listen. Is normal, to be nervous when meeting so many new people. But you're Shane fucking Hollander. Best player in the league. They are all so excited to meet you and get to know you and play with you on a team together. They have reason to be nervous because they're meeting you. I bet I will not be able to talk to you all night because they all want you to themselves. And I'll need to break up fights for who gets to talk to you next." Shane laughs, a little wetly and looks up into his husbands eyes. "You'd like that. But I doubt that's gonna happen. I just hope they like me." "Hey" Ilya grabs Shane's chin to make him look at him. "They will. I know it. And if they don't, it does not matter. I'm captain. I will make them run laps otherwise." Shane laughs again. "No you won't. Fuck off." "My own husband, not believing me. It hurts, Shane." He grabs his heart but then gets serious again. "Is okay now?" Shane swallows and nods. "Yeah, I think. I'm probably worrying for nothing." Ilya nods too. "Yes. You are very good at that." Shane punches him in the shoulder lightly and they smile at each other. "Thank you. I love you" Shane says and Ilya replies "I love you too. Now we have to go, or we will really be late." "Yeah okay" Shane breathes out one last time. "I'm ready." He takes Ilya's outstreched hand in his own and they leave for Bood's house. A few minutes later, Cassie opens the door with a smile, her arms full of stuff. "Hey you two! So glad you could make it! It's so nice to finally meet you Shane. Just go through the living room, they're all out back. Ilya, you know the way." With that, she leaves the door open for them to follow her and with a shared look, they walk inside. "Will be fine" Ilya mumbles and Shane tries to relax a little bit. "Hey guys, look who's here" Cassi says when they're standing in the garden and they're greeted by a lot of different voices. Bood steps forward from the grill. "Cap" he greets with a smile and a clap to Ilya's back. "And you brought Shane Hollander. It's nice to finally meet you. Officially" he held out his hand and Shane grabs it and is immediately pulled into a hug. "It's nice to meet you too. I'm excited to play with you all" Shane says and Bood's smile widened. "Are you kidding? We are excited to play with you. You're a legend, man. This season is going to be awesome." Someone shouts at him and Bood yells "Coming! Sorry guys, gotta get back to the grill. I have to keep my reputation as the best griller on the team, you know." He grins at Ilya and leaves. Shane lets out a breath as Ilya turns towards him. "Is fine, yes?"

It's hard when you're living / and you don't feel much / and you're down and you're hoping / that things are gonna change Apathy wasn’t quite the word for it; it was something much deeper than apathy was. It was like a numbness, like a void had taken root in Ilya’s heart and swallowed him whole. He wasn’t even moving on autopilot– no, he was incredibly aware of his every movement, every decision, every thought. It was inertia, pure and simple, that kept Ilya moving. There was no outside force to stop his motion, not when his brain was this empty, so he simply kept gliding along, wondering when the feeling would come back. If the feeling would come back.

The Phone Call by Rain_And_Books (Huni_obri)
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-15
“I’m fine,” Hayden snapped, voice cracking just a little. “You’re on drugs. You’re confused. Let’s maybe not talk about your... your marital activities.” He looked away from the man, finding the floor much more intriguing. “But it’s true! And you’ve heard them before.” The Russian explained, and Hayden paused. “No. I didn’t. I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” Ilya smiled. And Hayden groaned; it was one of those cocky smiles that he had whenever he was about to be an asshole. Which was always. Or Ilya gets sent to the hospital after he collapses. Now, all drugged up, he starts explaining to Hayden what happened during the phone call when he and Shane were at the cottage. Hayden sat on the chair watching Rozanov, contemplating every life decision he had ever made. Why did he agree to come with Shane to the hospital again? Oh, right, cause he’s a supportive friend and loves Shane. Rozanov’s chest rose and fell with his breaths. The man was still unconscious, the drugs they gave him knocking him out. Shane had to run home to get a couple of things and left Hayden all by himself. He had asked him to watch over Ilya in case he woke up, because he didn’t want his husband to be left alone. And now Hayden had to suffer through watching Rozanov. Though as long as he remained asleep, Hayden would be fine with it. Of course, Rozanov did not care for his comfort. Hayden had just started to relax, or as much as he could relax in a plastic chair that seemed designed to punish the human spine, when the steady rhythm of Rozanov’s breathing stammered. Hayden straightened instantly. “No,” he muttered under his breath. “Absolutely not.” Rozanov’s brow furrowed, the crease between his eyebrows deepening. His fingers twitched against the sheets. Once. Twice. Hayden leaned forward despite himself, eyes fixed on the bed. He told himself this was his responsibility. That Shane had trusted him with this. That if Rozanov woke up and tried to rip out his IV or start a fight with the heart monitor, it would technically be Hayden’s fault. His eyelids fluttered. Hayden groaned softly and scrubbed a hand down his face. “You have got to be kidding me.” Rozanov’s eyes opened, slow, unfocused, glassy with medication. For a long moment, he just stared at the ceiling, breathing shallow and uneven, like the air itself was an inconvenience. Then his gaze shifted. And landed on Hayden. Rozanov squinted, clearly trying to piece together reality. He then slowly moved his head away from Hayden and around the room. “Where is… Shane?” “Gone,” Hayden said. Then, because he wasn’t a monster - because he saw the hurt appear on Rozanov’s face and he didn’t want to see that expression on anyone’s face, even if he was Rozanov, he added. “Home. He’ll be back.” Rozanov’s face relaxed slightly, even though his body remained stiff. His fingers curled in the sheets again, knuckles whitening. “You stayed.” “He left me here,” Hayden corrected. “Against my will.” That earned him a faint huff of breath that might have been a laugh if it hadn’t sounded so painful. Rozanov closed his eyes for a second, regaining his composure. As much as he could in his highly medicated state. “You look,” Rozanov murmured, “miserable.” “Thank you,” Hayden said. “I’ve been working on that.” Another silence stretched between them. The machines filled it, beeping steadily, unbothered by the tension coiling in the room. Hayden shifted in his chair, suddenly aware of how close the bed was, how fragile Rozanov looked despite everything he knew about the man. Rozanov swallowed. “I don’t remember… coming here,” he admitted. “You collapsed on the ice,” Hayden said before he could stop himself. “Scared the hell out of Shane.” Rozanov’s eyes flicked back to him, something raw and unsettled flashing across his face before he masked it. He stared at the ceiling again, jaw clenched, like he could will himself back into unconsciousness. He remembered the sudden collapse of Rozanov. Montreal and Ottawa were playing against each other, and as soon as Ilya’s body collided with the ice, Shane became an absolute mess. Thankfully, Rozanov fainted towards the end of the third period; otherwise, Hayden was sure, the paramedics would have had to deal with two hockey players in need of medical assistance with Shane’s impending panic attack. Hayden exhaled slowly. Great. Wide awake. Alone together. This was going to be a long wait. “I want Shane,” Rozanov complained. Hayden sighed. “He’ll be here soon. He just needed to go grab some of your things.” Hayden explained again. He knew Rozanov was medicated, but he really didn’t want to keep repeating himself for the entirety of Shane’s absence. “But why couldn’t he go later?” Ilya whined. Hayden resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Somehow, this particular brand of Rozanov chaos was… almost amusing. He had half a mind to take out his phone and record him, just to spite him afterwards. “Because we didn’t expect you’d wake up already. He thought he’d come back to you still asleep.” Ilya frowned, as if Hayden had just told him the world’s greatest injustice. “But Shane is supposed to be here when I wake up.” “I know,” Hayden said, through gritted teeth. “He will be. Soon.” Ilya stared at the ceiling for a moment, then turned his head again, eyes unfocused. “He usually is.” Hayden paused, unsure where this was going. And kinda scared. Rozanov on a normal day was an ass, Rozanov high on drugs… “Usually is what?” “Here, when I wake up,” Ilya clarified. “Or when I fall asleep. Or in between.” He hummed thoughtfully. “Especially in between.” A lopsided smile appeared on his face, his eyes closing as if he had lost himself in a memory. Hayden felt something cold settle in his spine. He had a bad feeling about where this was going. “Okay,” he said quickly. “We don’t need to-“ “Because we have sex,” Ilya said, plainly. Hayden choked on absolutely nothing. “Yep. There it is.” He said, mortified, and then muttered. “I’m gonna kill Shane.” Ilya blinked at him,
