    Imagining that conversation made Ilya nauseous. Yes, no fucking doubt, Shane would be open to it if Ilya explained the reason. "I'm not going to ask him to do that."

    Set during The Long Game, an alternate version where the plane scene doesn't happen. Instead, there's this: a car crash, a therapist's duty to report, and an urgent reckoning with priorities.

Yuna said she wanted it on the mantle, and I don’t actually know where that goes.” he adds, sobering a touch with his actual question, but it doesn’t last long. “But I need you to come over here and help me. It is very important. For Christmas.” he adds and starts twirling the end of the garland with one hand. (ie. ilya is spending christmas with the hollanders for the first time and shane surprises him with misteltoe and ilya becomes a bit of a menace about it)

    Ilya had been talking about himself when he’d said it. Making a joke. Sailing a little close to the wind, sick of listening to the background hum of homophobic bullshit. But someone had been filming. The video went viral. The Raiders panicked under the terrible PR. Now he was here.

    Sent to Queer Studies 101 to appease twitter. Because he’d been cancelled. For being a homophobe. If was fucking ridiculous.

    He turns to the professor. “So, can you help me take on Putin and NHL at same time or I need more advanced class for this?”

    Shane Hollander is benched following the fanmail video that outed his relationship with his rival Ilya Rozanov. While walking alone in Montreal he passes by a sports bar showing the Metros losing without him and he meets two unlikely companions.

     

    “Didn’t mean to interrupt,” says Shane in soft English, looking at the bartender only, “Uh, just saw the game was on when I walked by, wanted to know the score.” He swallows thickly, “Guess we’re losing?”

    The man who’d called him a homo ducks and with considerable effort, puts the table back where it had been before. He mutters something that Shane thinks is an apology to the bartender. The other man shakes his hand and reaches for a nearby chair. 

    In English, the man who’d called him the pride of Montréal says loudly, “A ginger ale for Monsieur Hollander, yes?”

    Shane hesitates, then nods at the bartender, who wordlessly starts to pour. The two men finish righting the place and gesture for Shane to sit with them. Shane shouldn’t. But he does as the bartender comes over and sets a glass of ginger ale in front of him. 

    “So,” says Shane as casually as he can, “Uh, I guess you’re both Metros fans?”

    This is a one shot from my larger fic, "Growing Outward", which is basically book 7 of the Game Changers series if it was about Luca Haas. In that fic, Luca moves in with Ilya for his rookie year and slowly gets adopted by Hollanov. He also starts to develop a crush on fellow rookie, Eric Young. Some people wanted some scenes from Eric's perspective, so here we are!

    This scene is briefly alluded to in Chapter 13: Navigating of "Growing Outward" from Ilya's perspective, but this can be also read as a cute stand-alone fic if you really wanted to.

    “Was a terrible problem, then. When I was twenty. And twenty-two and twenty-four. Twenty-five. And I would think, this is going to kill me. I would think, then, that maybe I had spent more time wanting to see you when I could not than I had spent doing anything else. Even hockey.”

    Is Ilya going to tell Shane he has a weak backhand in their wedding vows? Yes, yes he is. Will Shane speak Russian? Did he secretly get help from Svetlana to prep for this? Is anyone going to mention the secret sex condo? Can Ilya avoid having to thank Scott Hunter in his actual vows? He’s certainly going to try.
