Then Scott Hunter looked at him, really looked at him with no panic or consternation or grief, just something heavy and piercing that made Ilya feel like his heart was on the outside of his ribcage. “Be safe out there, okay?”
“Okay,” Ilya said, softer than intended.
In real life, they both turned around and walked away into the night. But in Ilya’s memory, that never happens. They just stand there, eye-to-eye, until the sun comes up and it’s too bright to see anything else.

Shane and Ilya had mutually agreed to keep their whatever-they’re-doing out of Sochi. It was an easy decision to make: this was bigger than any MLH rivalry and definitely bigger than a few hotel hook-ups. There was no room for distractions, not with Olympic gold on the line. So it’d be really fucking great if their daemons could get on the same page and stop trying to cause an international fucking incident.

Finding your soulmate is supposed to be beautiful. You stand in front of someone and you say their full name; they say yours. Your soulmarks appear somewhere on your bodies, and it's supposed to be beautiful. Life-changing.
It's not supposed to happen a week before the World Juniors tournament in a dirty Saskatchewan parking lot. It's not supposed to be Canada's newest darling hockey player and your future rival who whispers your name. It's not supposed to be a boy that your skin blooms for.
And if that does happen, despite the fact that it shouldn't, you're definitely not supposed to lie to your soulmate's face, refuse to say his name in return, and pretend that you never felt your soulmark appear at all. And if that happens, somehow, you're definitely not supposed to kiss him less than a year later. And then later. And then later. And then later, until you realize you never want to leave his bed despite the fact that you've never told him the truth about the bear tattoo on your chest.
or, finding out that his soulmate is Shane Hollander isn't beautiful. Ilya can't pretend that it's not life-changing though.

"It had never really been in Ilya’s plans to start a Youtube channel for paranormal investigation..."
Ilya Rozanov is the playboy darling of the oft-forgotten ECHL who never quite lived up to his full potential, but he’s also known for spending the off-season hunting ghosts with his teammates Bood and Troy.
When they dare to investigate the tragic ruins of NHL legend Shane Hollander's former cottage, they are expecting to be confronted by a cursed haunting, a vengeful demon, or at the very least... some entertaining Youtube-worthy content. What Ilya is not expecting, however, is to form an inexplicable bond with the ghost of a hot hockey player and discover that nothing (literally nothing at all) is quite as it seems.
OR; Shane is a ghost, Ilya can see dead people, and it's entirely possible that they once knew each other in a past life.

Shane’s mom walks back in, then. Her angers melts when she sees them, a fond smile washing away the last of it from her face. “I’m not sure anyone would believe me if I told them you were this sweet together.” “Not always sweet,” Ilya says with laughter curling around the accented syllables. “You raise a menace, Mrs. Hollander.” Yuna nods, a quick little thing that screams satisfaction and pride. “Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” or: in a world where soulmates share each other's pain, Shane's in the hospital after the hit from Marleau revealed his soul tether with Ilya to the world. Yuna Hollander is there to make sure her boys get whatever the fuck they want from the NHL. A direct sequel to achilles, come down

“We knew when his words came in that he’d–” Yuna’s voice cracked around the idea, that specific word escaping her. “That he won’t have to know what it feels like to lose his soulmate.”
Because Shane was always going to go first. How must it have felt, to look upon her son and see those words, and know with complete certainty he would go first? Maybe it was better, having as vague of a word as Ilya did on his chest. At least he couldn’t think about it, couldn’t imagine scenarios in which it could be said.
“I assume,” Yuna said, pausing to take a deep breath as though to steel herself, “he said yours last night.”
Ilya nodded, admitting what he didn’t dare say out loud.
