The cocky curl of his lips was all the confirmation Shane needed. You really did time it, you fucker. Ilya’s decisive goal came two point six seconds before the end of the game. Not accidentally. He did it to spite the Montreal Metros. Shane most of all. It was cruel. Ilya Rozanov, with his Russian pride and mannerisms was cruel. Except for the times when he came to Shane’s hotel room. Or when Shane went to his. It was insane how Ilya always changed behind closed doors. How his smile turned genuine, how the weight of expectations lifted from his shoulders, and only the sweet lust remained, cradling Shane in its attentive arms. Ilya on the ice, wearing the colours of his team, and Ilya in the bedroom, wearing nothing, were two different people. TL;DR: Fuck toxic masculinity, everyone is allowed to cry!

  2. Honestly, it was a miracle they had won the Cup this past season, with how divided the team had become. And it was no one’s fault but his own, Shane thought. That’s why he had been so determined to win. To prove himself. To earn back his teammates' respect. To fix the divide. If that meant more pressure on himself, stricter dieting, more workouts, more time spent at the rink, ignoring quips and small acts of defiance against him, playing through any pain or illness, then he had decided that’s what he would do.

  3. It’s not fair. Shane doesn’t want to be with Rose and Ilya doesn’t want to marry Svetlana, but it would be so much fucking easier if they did want to, so much less complicated and actually accepted both legally and by the public. Sure, gay marriage is now legal in both Canada and the States but that’s only the tip of their problem-iceberg. It sucks and it’s stupid and it’s not fair and Shane feels childish whining and drinking about it but it’s not. Fucking. Fair.

  5. I could marry Svetlana. A noise built in his head. A steady, growing sound—and the more he thought about what had just happened, the harder it became to hear anything else. Another rush of noise pulsed behind his eyes. He twisted the tap to icy cold and splashed his face—the same water he’d praised not long ago, feeling sheepish and suddenly not knowing what to say. But they didn’t need words anymore. He’d thought so. His head felt ready to burst. He cupped a handful of water and poured it over his neck, gasping involuntarily. He stood there wet and shaking, water soaking through his shirt. He hated it. He hated how sticky it felt, how it clung to his burning skin—hated it as much as he’d hated that godawful ad shoot where they kept pouring water over him and touching him — “Shane?” Ilya’s voice cut through the noise, both in his head and through the bathroom door. Leave me alone. “Shane, are you okay?” Please leave me alone. Please do it now so it doesn’t hurt later.

Basically: Ilya gets concussed and the hospital calls Shane (who didn’t know that Ilya had put him down as his emergency contact) and who immediately races to Boston. (This is set during the hockey season after the last episode. They have come out to Shane’s parents and are ‘officially’ boyfriends, but Shane still plays for the Metros and Ilya still plays for Boston.)

  8. Right now, Ilya and Shane were running from the bullets that would probably catch up to them if they stopped. But Ilya wanted to stop running. He would take bullets to the chest a million times over if it kept Shane safe. He would stand in front of Shane and protect him from every bullet fired in their direction. He would take the hit because he knew how to deal with it. OR, Shane and Ilya can’t stop arguing over telling the world about their love. Ilya is scared of being outed. Shane is scared of what people might say.

Do you know about kinks?” And there go all of Shane’s plans for the night. Or: Ilya and Shane take an agonisingly long time to negotiate their kinks. Then, finally, they act on some of them.

  12. Shane put God on a back burner sometime between the ages of eleven and twelve. It was around that time that he barely stepped foot off the ice. His dad would joke that he was born with skates on, while his mother cursed out a grown man for a bad play. God, religion, faith came second to the rush of adrenaline as he flew on the ice.

It takes seventeen years and the love of his life being dead for twenty-eight minutes to relearn how to pray.

Or, Shane's game is cancelled and he reads Ilya's would have been last messages in a tiny hotel room with JJ and Hayden at his side.

  16. Ilya Rozanov hadn’t planned on getting a dog. It was the offseason, his life was already complicated, and the universe — according to his mother — was definitely keeping score. Shane Hollander definitely hadn’t planned on it either. He liked structure. Predictability. Things that didn’t bark, shed, or sprint toward chaos without warning. Or: Hollanov getting a dog!

  17. Eva was Ilya and Shane’s miracle child, born prematurely in the summer of their third season together on the Centaurs. The moment they laid eyes on her in the NICU of The Ottawa Hospital was the moment they both felt their life truly had purpose. Eva was smaller than the other babies but already had a head of soft blonde curls. Her tiny hands would grip Shane’s fingers as Ilya sang Russian lullabies, their favorite pastime, and her big blue eyes would marvel at the world around her. She was kind and sweet and truly an angel, which is what made it so, so terrifying when she told them at 5 years old that she wanted to play hockey like papa and daddy. - A 5+1 of Ilya and Shane’s life as parents, through the lens of their daughter’s experiences with hockey.

  18. Shane hears him, loud and clear, but it’s like his words are suddenly shallow and hollow, coming in bits and pieces as they funnel through one ear and out the other, and he swears he’s listening, swears he’s trying to hang onto every word out of his boyfriend's mouth, but that white hot static is louder than ever. His brain feels fuzzy and his eyes blur and whether it’s from unshed tears he hasn’t noticed yet or for another reason completely, he isn’t sure. He isn’t sure how he got from point A to point B, but all he knows is suddenly he can’t breathe. Suddenly, he’s six feet under, water encasing his lungs as they shrivel and expand into nothing. Shane had schedules to stick to, regimens to maintain, plays to study, drills to perfect. He needed to eat the same thing, every day. Train in the best way to keep his mind and body fit by keeping to strict programs. He needed to stick to his plan so that he could ensure that everything also went, well…to plan. He needed all of these things to fall in place otherwise— well he tried not to think too hard about the otherwise. He couldn’t let otherwise happen. Basically he’d treated his body like a fucking temple for majority of his life and had no problems with it yet— And then he turned 30. or Shane starts noticing changes after he turns 30— He doesn't bounce back the same way he used to and it suddenly sends him spiralling. Ilya is there to pick him up and kiss him better when he’s brought to an abrupt halt.

Ilya feels like he knows everything and nothing about Shane at once. He's a child of Nike, his team always wins Capture-the-flag, he's still in touch with his biological father, and he's obscenely lucky. What he doesn't know, is if Shane is the best or the worst person to quest with. // Aristotle's qualifications for a Greek tragedy include dianoia (thought and introspection) and opsis (spectacle and performance). Shane and Ilya bring both to the table.
