Hold On (I Still Want You) by velminort
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-11
Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called. Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough." And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up. *** They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time. “Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.” He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle. Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

What they lost (and what Ottawa gained) by mssarahx
Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)

Montreal tried to get Shane Hollander back. Shane and Ilya laughed, stayed married, and won anyway. Montreal realizes they want Shane Hollander back the same way people usually realize irreversible things: too late, through a screenshot, with a sense of dread they can’t quite justify. The photo is innocuous. Shane and Ilya in Ottawa, post-practice, arms slung around each other, Shane mid-laugh like happiness is no longer something he has to ration. Someone captions it culture matters. The replies are feral. Ilya notices first. “They follow you again,” he says mildly, scrolling. Shane squints at his phone. “Who?” “Montreal.” Shane blinks then barks out a laughs, “Oh my god. That’s hilarious.” They don’t start with a call or an apology or an acknowledgment of Shane's contribution. No, they start with interest; Likes on old photos, A vague article about unfinished business, A beat reporter using the word homecoming like it hasn’t already been poisoned. They don't come to Shane first, they go to the press, like they think peer pressure will make the offer taste sweeter. Shane reads headlines aloud like he’s doing a dramatic reading. “‘Sources say the organization has grown,’” he says. “Grown what? Regret?” Ilya hums. “They grow desperate.” The first email arrives a few days later. Shane opens it, reads one sentence, and hands his phone to Ilya. “They miss my leadership.” Ilya scrolls. “Do they miss apologizing?” “Nope.” “Then,” Ilya says, handing the phone back, “they miss the wrong thing.” Montreal escalates to an alarming degree. If Shane didn't know better, he'd think they actually wanted him back and not just the cup's he provided for them. Private calls, followed by carefully worded leaks, culminating in a handwritten letter that arrives in Ottawa like it expects gratitude. Shane opens it at the kitchen counter and dissolves into laughter. “They offered you the bigger closet,” he gasps. Ilya blinks. “They think I am movable.” “They think shelving fixes homophobia,” Shane wheezes. “I’m obsessed with how bad this is.” Ilya folds the letter neatly and drops it into recycling. “We are very happy,” he says calmly. “Somewhere else.” Ottawa, for their part, does not flinch. They know what they have and they know how to protect their own. They don't issue statements, no grovelling post's declaring how much they love Shane, they don't advertise that Shane's happy with them, they just let the fact's speak for themselves. They simply let him exist—loud, married, joyful—and the contrast does the work for them. Montreal’s locker room, however, implodes. Voyagers Group Chat: Jean-Luc: Ok, so this is officially bad right? Marc: This feels worse than bad Luc: The internet is calling it “aggressive flirting” Antoine: They sent him a LETTER Jean-Luc: I don’t get why he won’t even talk to management Hayden: Because the last time he talked, they told him to make his marriage disappear. Marc: That’s not how it was meant— Hayden: It’s how it landed. Antoine: They say they’ve changed Hayden: Did they apologize? Luc: …

“I do sometimes still think about how my life would have been if I never got injured,” Shane started to whisper. Ilya looked at him, he was focused on the ceiling. He grabbed his hand and placed it over his own chest. “But, you know, I’m glad that it led me here. To you,” the fondness that laced his tone opened Ilya in half. Ilya laid on his side, so he could contemplate him better. The sigh of Shane naked, only with the light sheet covering little of his modesty had something divine about it. “Maybe we could have met either way.” AU where neither of them play professional hockey but they make their way to each other eventually (Kids' coach shane and uncle ilya fall in love one practice at a time -and gay bar flirting-)

“Can dogs even get colds from humans?” Bood asks. A couple of players murmur but nobody seems to have an answer. “Maybe she’s pregnant,” Troy unhelpfully supplies and Shane physically braces himself for his husband’s reaction. “Pregnant?” is Ilya’s incredulous reply from across the ice. At this point, they’re not practicing at all anymore; everyone is much more interested in hearing out Anya’s supposed illness and even Coach Wiebe has joined the huddle. Shane and Ilya's dog, Anya, is sick. The Centaurs hold an intervention.

The thing is, Shane's gone non-verbal a few times now to not be scared by it and just ignore it until he feels good again. It usually happened when he was stressed, overwhelmed or overthinking, sometimes all three at the same time when he played a bad game and analyzed it a million times until he figured out exactly what he needed to practice on for the next few days. This time though, Shane was absolutely not stressed, everything was perfect so it made no sense for him to suddenly feel this. He's been at the cottage with Ilya for almost two weeks now, all they've done is talk, swim, fuck and eat, it's been so good, he's had no stress so why was he feeling this enormous pang of discomfort?

“Do not worry,” Ilya breathed against his lips. As if Shane had a choice in the matter. As if worry hadn’t kept Shane awake past midnight for weeks, as if he wasn’t scared to leave the house for too long in case Ilya did something stupid in his absence. He’d promised he wouldn’t. Several times over. Shane wanted to believe him, he did, but the worse Ilya’s depression got the more hollow the promise felt. “I always worry about you,” Shane said softly, pushing Ilya’s hair back from his forehead.

“What’s your favorite Russian word?” Ilya sits with his legs caging Shane in from behind, softly kissing the freckles behind his ears and down his neck. “You.” Shane doesn’t hesitate or have to think about it. It’s so simple, yet it means just about everything to him. “Without you I wouldn’t have a reason to love anything else.” His head tilts to say, angling awkwardly as he does his best to face Ilya and gauge his reaction. It’s subtle, but the twitch on the corner of his lips is enough for Shane to lean forward and press a kiss on Ilya's cheek. “Boring, right?” AKA... Ilya has something very important to ask, and Shane couldn't be more prepared to answer him.

The hotel room key feels like it weighs a thousand pounds in Shane's pocket. He stands outside the nondescript Marriott three blocks from the arena, watching his breath fog in the October air. Montreal won 3-2; a good game, clean, the kind where both teams left everything on the ice. The kind where Shane played well enough that no one will question why he's not at the team bar right now, celebrating with J.J. and the guys. His phone buzzes. Just the room number. 1847. Before the Long Game, Shane and Ilya try to make it work.

“Wait,” Ilya swallows. Fuck fuck fuck. What is he doing? He shouldn’t offer this. They shouldn’t do this. If he were responsible, he would stand up and help Shane get dressed and order him a ride. Offering what he really wants to do is dangerous. It crosses the line. He does it anyway. “Stay,” Ilya sits up, vision swimming. It seems that extra vodka has caught up with him. Shane hesitates, and Ilya feels the need to explain himself a little better. “We are too drunk to have sex, but you can sleep it off here.” ______________ After leaving an after-party for an award show, Ilya and Shane meet up for a hook-up. Ilya realizes that they have both drank too much to have sex, so he offers for Shane to spend the night instead and sleep it off. Before they fall asleep though, Shane says something he shouldn't.
