Marlow’s eyebrows rose briefly. He’d known that Roz and Montreal Girl had that thing for A While now, but this didn’t seem to be a very casual ‘hooking up whenever we’re in the same city’.
A tinge of guilt sparked in him about invading his Captain’s privacy but then, Jane seemed really worried. And she’s important to Roz, evidently, so he would probably want her to know he’s okay, right?
OR
Ilya gets injured during a game and Marlow follows him to the hospital. He texts a very worried Jane who promises she'll be there soon. The last person Marlow expected to show up in the waiting room is Shane Hollander.

Ilya can hear the squeak of wheels on linoleum floor, feel his body being moved along a hallway. Maybe the light dims in front of his eyelids when he’s pushed into an elevator. Maybe he’s just falling asleep.
How is he supposed to tell?
“Wait; is he okay?”
Ilya knows that voice, hears the panic in it.
“Please; how is he? Where are you taking him?”
Shane’s here? Why would Shane be here in the hospital?
If he’s in the hospital, how badly is he injured?Ilya gets injured during the playoffs, upending all of his and Shane's plans.

She's got her mouth open, too, ready to snap at him to leave, because Shane does not need this right now. He can come back, if he has to, when her son's less fucking vulnerable, high on painkillers and reeling from mood-swings; not that she thinks he will, which, good. Really, she's just about to, when Shane's voice sounds. "Ilyaaaaa!" he lets out delightedly. For another long moment, nobody moves. Rozanov's face has contorted. His brows are furrowed and he's looking only at Shane. Is he confused? Yuna's pretty damn confused. Because– "Il-yaaaa!" Shane repeats, loud and sounding – ecstatic, really. Absolutely ecstatic. Yuna stares at Shane's bruised face and tries, desperately, not to cry. She loves hockey, loves it with all her heart, is obsessed with Montreal and her son's career – but she hates it, too, when it leaves Shane broken, collapsed on the ice. It's not okay. It's never okay, seeing him there, helpless and hurt. It's even worse when she's not there. Yuna and David had been at home when it'd happened. They'd put the game on in the background, as they were wont to do with all of Shane's games, and Yuna'd been ironing as David made dinner, the two of them talking lightly together about nothing much. It'd been perfect, really. Her younger self would never have thought it, but she lives for those quiet evenings with her husband, easy and calm, the smell of good food wafting through the house and the croon of the speaker in the background. A good night, she'd thought. Shane'd been on his A-game. In the face-off, he'd stolen the puck from Rozanov, and raced across the ice, and he looked like he was really, truly enjoying it. He'd been smiling. Yuna'd remarked on it. Then, suddenly, silence. Yuna'd looked up at the sudden hush. The audience's usually a constant white noise, the calling and hooting and booing merging together into one dull sound. The commentators remarked on every pass Shane made, especially tonight, when they were playing Boston. Silence was never – ever – good. She hadn't known who it was at first. There was just a figure in a blue jersey, smashed onto the ice. She'd stood up, squinted. Was it Hayden? But no, PIKE was there, plastered on the back of the figure throwing himself onto the Boston player that'd caused the fall. Was it Gagnon? Then – "And Shane Hollander's down!" the commentator had announced, and everything in Y una went still. Shane's been injured before, of course. It's hockey. Yuna'd been forced to cope with it ever since Shane was nine and first bowled over by one of the other players – bigger than him, bulkier than him, always more aggressive than him. He usually gets up, though. He usually gets up. He doesn't this time. After that, everything blurred into one. David had sprinted upstairs, and he’d grabbed the overnight bag that they'd never used, that was needed only for emergencies, and then he'd been down and Yuna'd remembered how to breathe again and they were in the car, rushing- rushing-rushing to where their son was, miles away, being carted off to hospital in Montreal. They'd got there as soon as they could. It wasn't soon enough. But the doctor had calmed them, reassured them, told them, "Your son's alright, Mr and Mrs Hollander, he's just got a fractured collarbone and a mild concussion. Don't worry." Then he'd added, with a friendly grin, "He'll be out for the playoffs, though, I'm afraid." A Voyageurs fan. As if Yuna cared about the playoffs.–Shane would, though, she remembered, and told herself to give a brittle smile and thank him. She did. She's here, now, sat at his bedside. It's not a familiar position, not like it would be for a lot of hockey families. Shane's just that good. Yuna's overwhelmingly glad it's not. She doesn't think she could cope if he got himself in here every season. It's been a few hours since he'd first woken up, blinking dazedly at her and David, drugs pumping through his system to keep him relaxed and pain-free. It'd been startling, actually, the easy grin that slid onto his face when he'd spotted them. Shane'd smiled slow and smooth and genuine. It'd crinkled his eyes up and he’d been squinting, too, because of the bright lights, and he’d looked happy. Happy and loose in a way that made Yuna realise he was usually so, so tense; so, so stiff. He'd been slow to wake. He'd shifted, and grumbled to himself, and Yuna and David had rushed to his bedside to be right there when he finally blinked himself to consciousness. His head flopped a bit, and he’d muttered something she couldn't quite make out that sounded like "Ill-ya," and repeated it over and over again. She still doesn't know what it means. He'd stopped saying it when he realised she and David were there, had quietened down and looked at her and then beamed. Then his grin had gotten smaller, regulating, but he'd greeted them in a soft, slurred voice, and very quickly gotten tired again and drifted off. That'd been around midnight, Yuna thinks, maybe later. David had exhaled and kissed her and gone off to book them a hotel for a couple days. Yuna couldn't bring herself to go with him. Because he knows her, and he loves her, and probably because he feels better if Shane has one of them there, he'd gone without protest. She'll join him tonight, she thinks. When Shane's been awake for more than just a few minutes. She just sat with him, watching him breathe; she checks the clock and the heart-rate monitor every so often. She'd managed to get a few hours in around three a.m., crashing in the stiff armchair in the corner of the private room Shane's in, and she'd woke up again at half seven, her phone glaring in the dull dark of the room. One of the nurses must have switched the light off when they'd seen her asleep. Yuna's thankful. Now, the little numbers on the screen say 08:47. Visiting time's started. Not that anyone'll be by for a couple hours yet, thank God, because Yuna really can't deal with people right now. Except David. He should be here shortly too, the only saving grace. Him, she always wants by her side. As if summoned by her thoughts, there's a gentle knock at the door, and it's pulled open. David walks in, circles under his eyes, but they're certainly not as bad as hers are bound to be. His expression softens when he looks at her, and she smiles a little helplessly. "How's he doing?" he asks lowly. "Alright, I think," she says honestly. "But –" "It's never easy seeing him like this," David agrees. Yuna lets out an exhausted sigh. "Yes," she says. "Yes. Nothing's changed since you left. He's just..."

Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.
——————————————————
During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. As they race against the clock to save Ilya's life, Shane reckons with the secrets they have been forced to keep and fears that they might never get to live their truth out in the open.- Language:

“I have a secret,” Ilya whispers.
Half-awake, Shane blinks at him sleepily. “What is it?”
“I cannot say.” Ilya’s eyes flicker between Shane’s. “But this secret, it is why things are complicated. It is why I didn’t go to Russia when my father died.”

Shane loses his game to a blizzard and his boyfriend to a bad hit, all in the same night.
Snowed in with his parents in Montreal, he watches Ilya get stretchered off on live TV, and discovers that when your relationship is a secret, no one at the hospital thinks to call you.
In Ottawa, Ilya wakes up with broken bones, a serious concussion, and a neatly edited brain. The months where he was lonely and depressed and fighting with Shane? Gone. He’s mentally living in the soft, hopeful beginning of things—and the more everyone tiptoes around him, the more wrong it feels.
The Centaurs step up. The Hollanders dig in. Shane tries to convince himself that “temporary amnesia” is not the same thing as losing him.
They’re still together. They’re technically fine.

Ilya Rozanov doesn’t like asking for help, especially at four in the morning. Unfortunately, his appendix doesn’t care about pride. When the pain gets bad enough to force his hand—and Shane is hours away—he calls Yuna. She answers before the second ring. Ilya is dreaming about his mother. At least, he thinks he is. The dream is already slipping away by the time his eyes open and he jolts awake. He can’t remember what she was saying, or even if she was really there, but the feeling of her lingers in his chest. He has just enough time to register that before something else cuts in. A twisting, terrible pressure low in his abdomen. It’s deep and wrong and sudden enough to make him suck in a breath. He lies there in the dark, staring up at the ceiling, trying to get his bearings. It’s nothing, he tells himself because he has a team breakfast tomorrow and he doesn’t have time for this. He can’t afford to be dramatic about a random ache in the middle of the night. So he stays still. Doesn’t shift, doesn’t test it. He waits for it to fade on its own. It doesn’t. It gets worse. Just enough that it’s impossible to ignore. It pulses, sharp in a way that makes his jaw tighten. Sleep is clearly not happening. He closes his eyes anyway, stubborn about it, but every breath seems to set it off again. He wishes, as he does every night, that Shane were there beside him. But Shane is in Montreal, and Ilya is in his Ottawa house, alone in the dark. If Shane were here, he’d probably be sprawled half on top of him asleep, and Ilya would have to nudge him off his chest which would probably wake him up. Shane would probably already be asking what’s wrong… Okay, he thinks. Enough. Ilya shifts toward the edge of the bed, moving carefully, like that might make a difference. Maybe he just needs water or maybe there’s something he can take for the pain. His feet hit the floor and for one stupid second he thinks it’s fine— Then the pain spikes, sudden and blinding, and the room tilts violently. His knees give out before he can grab anything, and he goes down hard onto the floor, the impact jarring and loud in the quiet house. He lies there, gasping, curled around the pain, knowing with cold certainty that this is not something he can ignore. The anger comes next, sharp enough to almost cut through the pain. He’s furious with himself for lying there and being weak. He’s had so many hits on the ice, he’s lost count. He knows how to push through discomfort; it’s practically a job requirement. This shouldn’t be enough to put him on the floor. And then a worse thought slips in, quiet and horrifying that makes him feel so alone, alone and scared. What if he dies like this—alone on his bedroom floor, the house dark and empty, no one even knowing something is wrong. The idea makes his heart race, panicked and uneven. What if he never sees Shane again? The thought is unbearable. He tries to shove it away, to replace it with something simple. He tells himself to get up. To move. To stop being ridiculous. He digs his hands into the floor, tries to push himself upright. It’s not determination so much as instinct. He drags himself across the floor, slow and awkward, the movement setting his stomach on fire. His phone is still on the nightstand. The distance to it feels ridiculous, like it’s on the other side of the house instead of just a few feet away. He gets there eventually and fumbles it into his hand, fingers slick with sweat. The screen lights up the dark. 4:07 a.m. He opens a text to Shane anyway. The blank screen stares back at him. He can picture Shane waking up to it, groggy and alarmed before he’s even fully conscious. Texting him in the middle of the night would send him straight into panic mode, and Ilya can’t do that. He doesn’t want to be the reason Shane spends the rest of the night terrified hours away. He doesn’t know what he would even say. Hey, I think something’s wrong feels like too much. Another spike of pain rips through him, sudden and brutal, bright enough to wipe the thought clean from his head. His breath catches, vision blurring, and his thumb slips off Shane’s name as the decision is made for him. He calls Yuna. He isn’t entirely sure why. Maybe because she’s listed as his emergency contact on a dozen work forms and in his phone, so his brain goes to her automatically. Maybe because she’s close by. Maybe, secretly, because he loves Shane’s mother very much, and she’s the kind of person who will know exactly what to do. She answers before the second ring, and Ilya opens his mouth and realizes he has nothing. The words are tangled up and useless. English refuses to cooperate. For a split second he thinks, If I were still in Russia, I wouldn’t do this. I wouldn’t call anyone. I wouldn’t be this weak.

“Who did this to you?” he seethes, barely recognizing his own voice as blood pounds in his ears.
Shane doesn’t answer. Just shakes his head as he stumbles forward, crashing into Ilya with what little strength he has left.
Ilya’s arms come up immediately to hold him, to cradle him in the circle of his arms. But the question remains on his lips, and he repeats it, the words still laced with venom. “Who did this to you?”
“I don’t want to tell you,” he says. “You’ll kill him.”
“You are fucking right, I will kill him,” Ilya says, his hand coming up to wipe a bead of blood from Shane’s face.
“I’m not worth that,” Shane responds, and Ilya immediately wants to counter that he’s worth all of that and more. There’s nothing that even remotely compares. And anyone who dares to do so much as lay a finger on Shane Hollander will have to answer to him and the wrath of everything he has at his disposal.
“Shane,” he says, softer this time, hoping maybe a shift in tone will lead him to what he needs. “Who did this?”
Shane pulls back slightly, his face devastated as he says, “Your brother.”
