JJ patted Hayden on the back when the video sprung from the collision to Hayden's punches. Honestly he was pretty impressed with himself. He was able to get a few good swings at Marlow in before the refs separated them- but that wasn’t important right now. He could feel good about it after he knew Shane was okay. Besides, for some reason Hayden wasn’t focused on his form while punching. He didn't even notice the rest of his teammates' fighting for Shanes honor. For some reason his gaze lingered on Rozanov. Rozanov who looked pained at Shane crumpling. Rozanov who seemed scared for his rival. Rozanov who wore his heart on his sleeve while skating up to Shane. Did Hayden get punched so hard he started seeing things? - Or, Hayden starts putting together the puzzle of Ilya Rozanov while on his way to the hospital to visit Shane. Too bad he has no idea that Shane Hollander is also a part of this puzzle.

“Shane, honey, you might want to check your caller ID before you answer the phone.” He choked on a gasp at the sound of his mother’s voice. “Oh my god. Oh my god. Goodbye. Can we pretend you didn’t hear any of that? Oh god. Bye!” He hung up and dropped his face in his hands. His face felt hot, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

He sees the moment Rozanov realizes Shane has remembered what the package is, which is probably at the same fucking time that Shane himself remembers what the package is. Shane's package gets delivered to his neighbour; it would have been less mortifying if his neighbour wasn't a nosy asshole with no shame. Sadly, Shane is into that

“You smoke,” Shane says, amused. He fumbles with finding the ledge on the cap to snap it off and get the joint. He ends up just squeezing the top of the tube until it pops open. Ilya watches him take out the joint and hold it between two fingers to his lips. Ilya pinches the bridge of his nose, sighing. “Yes, I smoke” he starts, “but I do not do drugs.” aka Ilya gets high and unexpectedly soft plus a bonus cat

“You’re being difficult.” “I am not being difficult, Hollander, you are the one being difficult and annoying.” “I just don’t see what the big deal is,” Shane had his phone pressed between his ear and his shoulder as he moved around his kitchen, making breakfast, “It’s not like it’s some kind of classified information.” “Is just not important,” Ilya said evasively, and Shane could hear the sound of his fridge opening on the other end. “I think your birthday is very important,” Shane said stubbornly, setting his glass down a little harder than he meant to, so that it clacked against the countertop, “I don’t know why you’re acting like this about it.”

Ilya and Shane join the Pike family for ice skating. “Have we ever done this before? Skated like. Not for hockey?” Ilya laughed. “Guess not.” “It’s kinda nice.” “Yeah,” Ilya said. God, Shane loved that smile. It was a beautiful day. The air was crisp, the sky a bright blue above Ottawa’s nicest outdoor rink—well, nicest with all-ages family skate hours, and mozzarella sticks and hot chocolate in the adjoining shopping center. The crowds skewed just young-family enough that they didn’t usually get recognized and mobbed, maybe a fan or two but not enough to spoil a day. Shane squinted against the glare of the sun, vaguely missing the controlled familiarity of a rink. It was almost too bright against the outdoor ice. “Sweetie—sweetie, please go to Uncle Shane, Daddy’s got his hands full with your sisters.” came Hayden’s voice, a note of panic in it. Jade was half-dragging Hayd behind her, while Ruby clung to him like she was still unsure she liked skating at all. Shane turned just in time for the littlest Pike, Amber, to careen into his shins. “Oof,” he said easily, smiling as he took her mittened hand. “I don’t want to fall again,” Amber said, looking at Shane with bright eyes, and Shane’s heart just about melted. He kept losing track of how old Hayden’s kids were, but whatever age this was it was one of the cutest. “I’m not going to let you fall,” he said. “Wanna do one loop with me?” Amber sniffed, shuffling her skates. Shane was starting to feel useless. “Amber, Amber!” Arthur Pike’s little voice piped up behind them, approaching fast. Shane turned and his heart went hot in his chest. Ilya was hand in hand with Arthur, who was small for a seven (eight?) year old. Both of them had bright pink cheeks, knit scarves flowing behind them as they zoomed up and slid to an easy, excited halt. “That was so much fun! Can we go around again? No, wait—Amber, do you want a turn with Uncle Ilya?” Amber slid closer to Shane, shaking her head shyly. If it were anyone else, Shane suspected, Ilya would’ve drawn back in mock affront. But Ilya was so damn good with kids—better than any of them, in Shane’s opinion. “No, that was Arthur loop. Amber loop is different,” Ilya said, swinging Arthur around to come up next to Shane and Amber. “What’s an Amber loop like?” Amber asked. Ilya smiled at her, and Shane felt hot right down to his toes. “Can I show you? We stop if you don’t like, of course.” “Okay,” Amber said, smiling back. “Okay! Great.” Ilya turned his eyes to Shane. Even now, Shane felt himself blushing. Ilya’s smile deepened. God, he might be blushing too. “I take your other hand. Yeah? Good! Okay, here we go.” The four of them made a little chain. Shane, Amber, Ilya, Arthur. Arthur could kick and scurry all he wanted, while Ilya kept a hold of him and a steady pace for Amber, and Shane took the spot closest to center ice to anchor them. It was…easy. It was fun. It felt so natural, it was insane. When was the last time Shane had experienced something new on the ice? It was literally new! A different attention paid to his body and his mind, and it was out here on a version of the ice he loved so much, miles away from games or pressure or the public eye. The love of his life linked to him by their friends’ kids. The kids screamed in delight, kicking their feet because they knew Shane and Ilya had them. Somewhere distantly, there was music. Ilya was laughing, doing one of the silly voices that all the Pike kids liked best. Shane caught his eye. They shared a smile. It was private because it was theirs and no one else’s, but it was also out in the open, hidden from no one. His love. His love. Something simple and obvious and miraculous all at once. Ilya’s hair’s a mess. His whole face is rosy, his handsome frame ridiculously dreamy in his tailored winter jacket on the ice. Shane loved seeing him like this, getting to appreciate Ilya’s body doing what it did best (well, second-best), wearing his too-fucking-sexy wardrobe instead of their usual gear. He was hot in his gear too, obviously. But this was a rarer treat. “I love you so much,” Shane called to him as they skated in their little line. “I love you too,” Ilya called back. And then, quieter but not quiet enough, he said something in Russian that made Shane hiss Ilya! Thankfully, Jackie was back from the bathroom and loping toward them on the ice. “Thank you for skating with me, Uncle Shane and Uncle Ilya! I had so much fun!” Amber said through giggles. Ilya bowed low on the ice. “Any time,” he grinned. Arthur called his thanks back too, already tugging his mom and sister to the rest of the family. And then it was just Shane and Ilya on the ice.

“Ilya?” Shane calls, and Ilya spins around to see Shane holding the most damning thing he could’ve found in Ilya’s suitcase—that damned Montreal Metros hoodie. “This is mine, isn’t it?” Ilya freezes. “Eh?” “How do you have this? I thought I’d lost it ages ago.” There’s no good way for Ilya to say the truth, which is that: you left it at my house in Boston after you broke my heart for the first time and I kept it so I could wear it occasionally and jerk off while thinking about you when I thought I would probably never be able to have you again and it was the last bit of you I could have, so Ilya settles for the next best thing, which is: “It… it is not yours.” Shane shoots him an unimpressed look. Ilya is really struggling with the fact that he wants to keep Shane forever and steal his clothes and leave dumb hickies on him and wake up to him in the morning. He's working on it.

“Don’t blink, dorogoy,” says Ilya. Shane feels his body tense, bracing in response to the unexpected Russian. “I don’t even know what that means!” he says, irritated. Ilya smirks. “That’s what makes it fun.” The puck drops. Ilya wins the face-off. Five times Ilya calls Shane pet names in Russian, and one time he finally understands them.

"How about you tell me everything that’s on your mind but in Russian? I won’t understand but maybe it’ll help?” Ilya never speaks his mind in English, not really. Besides, feelings don’t really have a place in this dance they’ve been doing for years. Shane discovered that easily enough on the couch in Ilya’s house, flayed open under his gaze by a single utterance of his first name. He bolted like a spooked horse before the afterglow could even set in. But God, what if Shane could finally get a real glimpse into it? To see what Ilya won’t tell him, can’t tell him? The emotions he keeps buried so deep under the Hollanders and that asshole persona? Before he can think better of it, Shane pulls up his Google Translate app. or, a re-imagining of the phone call confession in episode 5

“And what about the sad Russian gay kids who want to see me succeed?” “The sad Russian gay kids have already seen you succeed. You are an MLH champion married to a man.” “Yeah, in another country,” Ilya added. Because that is the full picture. You can succeed, sure, if luck is on your side. But even then, you can’t do it there.
