  1. Ilya Rozanov spoke like he knew him because he fucking did.

“Oh my god,” Shane shrieked, the sound too loud for the space. “Oh my GOD,” Shane repeated, heart thrumming in his chest just like before.

This was a sick, cosmic fucking joke. How hadn’t Shane put two and two together before? His memory and pattern recognition were what made him so good at his job, his ability to remember the small details others tend to over look is what made him recoil into himself because others didn’t remember minute particulars, others certainly didn’t voice them and make others uncomfortable.

Shane couldn’t believe it. How had he been so fucking blind? So fucking obtuse all these months with the back and forth?

Rose’s comment weeks ago came front and center into his mind.

“He’s really getting under your skin, isn’t he?”

    Shane wanted to fucking die.

Shane Hollander knew Ilya Rozanov. How the fuck could he ever forget?

  2. Shane stuck his hand out. “Shane Hollander.” He waited for… well, he didn’t know what. A flicker of recognition. Possibly surprise? Delight was perhaps a bit much to hope for, but maybe some kind of excitement about meeting one’s soulmate, the same giddy feeling that was swirling in Shane’s stomach just from standing face to face. Ilya Rozanov gave him nothing. Just glanced between Shane’s face and his hand like Shane had offended him somehow, before finally taking it— —and promptly turning back around to light his cigarette. In which Ilya Rozanov is the name on Shane’s wrist, but Shane Hollander is not on Ilya’s.

  3. Ilya Rozanov has spent years wanting Shane Hollander quietly, carefully, never letting himself reach too far. After an injury changes everything, Shane stays with him for a week, and Ilya finally learns what it means to care openly, love honestly, and choose the thing he’s been afraid to want. Or, When Shane is forced to stay with him after a hospital discharge, Ilya finds himself doing the one thing he’s always avoided, loving Shane out loud. A story about caretaking, fear, constellations, printed memories, and finally choosing each other.

  4. “You have no idea who your parents really are, do you?” the Russian asked seriously after a few minutes passed of them staring at one another, though it was really more Shane glaring and heaving while Ilya calmly observed him with an unsure glint in his eye. “I have no idea what I’m doing here and what you want with them. If this is some kind of stupid business dispute, I have bad news for you, asshole. I don't know about their business, I don’t even know what their business is, and I’ve never been involved in their business,” Shane seethed as slowly as he possibly could so Ilya could understand that he genuinely had no idea of what was going on. “Now will you please untie me and take me home? I don’t even care if you knock me out again, just fucking let me go!” Ilya set the glass down to the side of him on the black leather cushion and rose from his seat, unfolding gracefully until he was towering over Shane with cool indifference. He bent slightly, leaned in close enough to Shane’s face that he could smell the vodka the Russian man had been drinking, then said easily, “I think I will keep you, actually.”

  6. Shane picks up on the third ring.

    “What?”

Ilya closes his eyes, humiliation twisting his gut. Still, though, it’s nice to hear his voice. His shoulders sag a little. “Hollander?”

“I don’t–” Shane sighs, long and heavy. “Why are you calling?”

Why is he calling? Ilya couldn’t answer. Not in any way that makes sense, anyway.

Voice wobbling, Ilya says, “I am sorry.” He inhales, breath hitching horribly. “Was mistake.”

On the other line, Shane goes quiet. Then, shuffling around, he says, “What’s going on, Rozanov?”

Or: Ilya calls Shane in the middle of the night, and against his better judgment, Shane comes to find him.

  7. Check the news, Hayden Pike texts him, and it is news to Ilya that he has this man’s number at all, and that he is even saved under his own name and not just an unknown number. Ilya cannot help but to be curious so he does as the message says and checks his Twitter account, even though he has been awake only three seconds and he doesn’t trust Hayden Pike as far as he can throw him.

  8. Did you figure anything out? Shane writes, and flips the page around for Ilya to read it.

Wont like the answer, Ilya’s written, in his quick hand.

So he doesn’t have to take the pen back, Shane just shrugs. What?

Ilya sits down at the desk for a steady surface to explain.

    3 things
1 its curse. if true we can break it
2 its spell. if true we can break it
3 we are soulmates. if true we are fucked

“No,” Shane mutters, before he can stop himself. Immediately, he slams a hand over his mouth.

or: Ilya and Shane are soulmates, and their bond prevents them from both talking and being apart. Unfortunately, the only thing that’ll make the pain stop is confessing the one thing they can say: that they’re in love.

  9. "Hmm, what was that, Hollander? Were you trying to say something?" Even though Shane and Ilya often only refer to one another by their last names, the way it sounds rolling off Ilya's sex drunk, accented tongue has Shane feeling tingles all the way down his spine. "Fuck off—jesus, ah!—stop talking and fuck me already!" Shane finally snaps. His cheeks are ruddy, voice hoarse from moaning, and his legs are shaking. 11. “Shane, shit, don’t look now.” Rose says. “Paparazzi?” Shane guesses. They’d been on them for weeks. He was no stranger to some pictures here and there, but being with Rose was different. She couldn’t walk down the block without someone shoving a camera in her face. He hoped they hadn’t followed them here. He didn’t want to be at this club and he definitely didn’t want to be photographed. “No,” Rose says. Something in her tone makes Shane turn. It’s not worry exactly, but something in that family, a pace to the left. Concern? Trouble? He tries to follow her eyes, tries to catch what she sees. It’s no use. He doesn’t see until it’s too late. “It’s Ilya Rozanov.”

Shane rolls his eyes and looks away, unable to maintain eye contact. “You don’t,” he whispers, and Ilya pushes himself to his feet, approaching Shane warily, like any sudden movements will scare him away. “Shane,” he says, reaching out and taking one of Shane’s hands, “look at me.” He waits, and waits, for Shane to turn his attention back to him. “Why would I lie? You said you wanted us to be honest, I am being honest.” A tear finally escapes and runs down Shane’s cheek. He doesn’t appear to notice. “You love me.” It’s a statement, not a question.

  16. “Wait,” Ilya swallows. Fuck fuck fuck. What is he doing? He shouldn’t offer this. They shouldn’t do this. If he were responsible, he would stand up and help Shane get dressed and order him a ride. Offering what he really wants to do is dangerous. It crosses the line. He does it anyway. “Stay,” Ilya sits up, vision swimming. It seems that extra vodka has caught up with him. Shane hesitates, and Ilya feels the need to explain himself a little better. “We are too drunk to have sex, but you can sleep it off here.” ______________ After leaving an after-party for an award show, Ilya and Shane meet up for a hook-up. Ilya realizes that they have both drank too much to have sex, so he offers for Shane to spend the night instead and sleep it off. Before they fall asleep though, Shane says something he shouldn't.

  17. Shane remembers Ilya telling him once that hell is the suffering of being unable to love anymore, and Shane hadn’t understood that then. He couldn’t imagine being unable to love, because they were freshly married and blindingly happy and there was no force in the world that could take it away. But Shane thinks he gets it now, as he thinks about that grey December afternoon and beautiful blond boy in a toque with no one to love and no one to love him. That’s hell, he thinks. That’s hell, and he can barely speak around the swell of emotion in his throat, around the grief he feels at having held Ilya’s young hand for only a moment, for how he can never go back and hold him like he deserves to be held. They’re out - they’ve been out - and Shane can hardly stand it sometimes, how fucking good it feels to see Ilya enter a crowded room and meet his eyes and not feel that cold shock of terror zip down his spine. How plainly he can show love on his face after a decade of closed doors and frantic, not-enough stolen moments and being too terrified to let even his phone know he loves Ilya Rozanov. How he can reach out and tangle fingers with the love of his life and this new world they live in doesn’t try to cave in, or make them leave it, or make them leave each other. It drives him out of his mind daily, thinking about the life they lived together - apart, too fucking apart - for nearly ten years. Sometimes he looks at the slope of Ilya’s shoulders peeking out of a dark cotton tank top on their couch or the point of his toes tapping Shane’s across the space between their chairs or the soft swirl of golden curls darkened in the shower they designed together. Sometimes he looks at those things and his chest wells so full of love he feels like he might burst. Sometimes he looks at those things and feels like he might burst, yeah, but it’s not what drives him crazy. What drives him crazy is the memory of baby-rounded cheeks outside a rink in the prairies in 2008, in the dead of a bitterly cold winter, his first look at the face that would wallpaper his twenties, his whole life. Pinked by the wind, softened by youth, eyes sharp with interest but not familiarity, not yet. Eyes so icy grey they could have been carved from the pavement beneath their feet. A cigarette dangling from lips Shane hasn’t felt yet, but thinks about for months after. It’s the cheeks, though, when he really considers it. Ilya’s eyes are the same, still that same ice-cold grey, but softened around the edges by love and warmth and being loved. His lips are the same too, still full and pink, and they still stick in Shane’s mind like a very lovely thorn, all these years later. The cheeks, though. Soft and round, like a child on the brink of manhood, pink from the wind and maybe a blush - although Shane knows, he’s heard it a thousand times, Russians do not blush, even though Shane’s seen it happen a hundred different ways. They’re different now, sharper and angled in a way that makes air stick in Shane’s chest every time the light catches Ilya’s perfect cheekbones just so. Shane knows the world looks at Ilya Rozanov, a study in curls and cheekbones and mouthwatering iliac furrows, and sees someone dangerous and hot. Shane looks and sees a mouth softened with warmth, a divot between pecs that holds the dangling gold remnants of the only other soul who ever loved Ilya more than Shane does now. He sees a scar low on a golden stomach where doctors took Ilya’s appendix three years ago while Shane waited alone and terrified in Ilya’s Boston penthouse, feeling like a bird in a cage he built for himself. He sees calloused feet, scarred and blistered and worth millions of dollars. And he sees those cheeks. Shane’s life is a montage, or a flipbook of all his greatest hits, all still life images of Ilya Rozanov’s beautiful face growing thinner and stronger and sharper with age right before Shane’s eyes. It drives him crazy. Sometimes he thinks he’s at peace with it all, the years that passed them by and the youth and time and fear they wasted. He doesn’t feel old, really. They’re both thirty-one, they both have many years of hockey and their life together ahead of them. But he thinks about those soft cheeks on Ilya’s seventeen year old face and he knows he will never forgive himself for the years he spent looking at Ilya as anything but the other half of his soul. What he wouldn’t give to go back, to stretch his hand out to the beautiful, pink-faced boy lighting a cigarette against the chill of a Saskatchewan wind in December and tell him he loves him. Too many years passed between that moment and their tearful, overdue profession of love at the cottage. Too many years where it was true and unsaid and only thought about with panic, or denial, or the desire for it to stop. Years ago, a gentle soul stood in the cold with no one to love him, and Shane didn’t fix it for far too long. It drives him crazy. It keeps him up at night, often, just like it does tonight. The house is dark, and Ilya is asleep beside him in their bed, one they’ve shared every single night for a year now - thank god, thank anyone, thank everyone - and Shane watches him like he still can’t believe it. He can’t, not in moments like this when Ilya is still and peaceful and relaxed in a way that makes Shane’s chest ache with love. It feels like a cosmic joke that Shane has ended up here, loved and in love, with someone who eases every ache that’s ever settled itself in his mind, heart, and body. He doesn’t feel special enough for a gift like this - he’s already been given

As she watched Rozanov skate half circles around Shane's unconscious body in the unnatural quiet of the Boston arena, Jackie Pike's heart raced. Her whole body shook as her brain struggled to make sense of what was happening. A few moments later, she recognized the Russian's expression. She'd seen it on the faces of other WAGs when their men went down hard. It was the physical manifestation of her recurring nightmare - Hayden motionless and bleeding after a hit, thinking she was about to lose the love of her life. Nothing else existed but that body lying on the ice. This was exactly how Rozanov looked at him now, and the only possible explanation was love. Or, A 5 + 1 story about five people who observe the relationship between Shane and Ilya unfold in real time and come to their own conclusions about what's going on. Plus, a bonus chapter featuring the family dinner that Shane’s parents invite themselves to right after meeting Ilya for the first time.

  19. Sometimes, it feels like they’re two planets caught in the same volatile orbit. Shane spends his nights wondering why the girls in the rinkside seats feel like white noise while every single highlight reel of Ilya Rozanov feels like a secret rendezvous. Ilya spends his afternoons wondering if the heavy thrumming in his heart whenever Shane pins him against the boards is hate, or if it’s the only thing that makes him feel human. All Ilya knows is that he would have been there to tell him that a lost game wasn’t the end of the world, and he would have iced the bruises on Shane’s back. Their story is a road movie. It’s a double-feature. Two boys striking out across a field of wildflowers in Ottawa, while desire, like a monster, crawls up out of a lake nearby. All of us are wondering if these two boys will find a way to figure things out. One cuts a lock of his hair with a steak knife in the restroom of a gas station. He knows he’s desperate to subvert expectations. Expectations of being the golden boy, the very best, the pride of his family. The other smothers a cigarette on the ground with the toe of his scuffed-up boot. He presses down on it, hard, and it almost feels like a part of his bruised heart gets smashed into the tile too. One boy, half-destroyed, and the other, half-complete. Both screaming into the space between their faces as they run across a field, watching the sky around them transform from dark night into the coming of dawn. It’s not just the warmth of the glow of sunrise they’re feeling, no. There’s something more there that makes their hearts flutter, something that settles into the pits of their stomachs as Shane grabs onto Ilya’s hand. The world still looks the same to Ilya, but when he squints a little harder, he realizes it burns brighter. It’s shinier, and it’s sunnier. It’s better. OTTAWA, 2005 There is a kind of love between them that Ilya doesn’t quite know how to describe. A love that blazes in innocence, born on a Tuesday afternoon in a downtown community rink. Warm, damp grass grazes Ilya’s palms as he leans back on his hands outside the arena, letting himself bathe in the slow midday heat. It feels like soft kisses across his face. Something he never knew and felt in the biting winters of his childhood in Moscow. It’s nice. Shane braces himself with a wince as he feels the ice beneath his palms etch into his skin like a blade after a particularly hard fall. He feels the glaring floodlights burn holes into his back, right through his jersey. “How do you do it?” “Do what?” Two boys with their shoulders pressed against each other’s as they lean over the boards. Shane with his custom skates that are glossy with crisp red lines running across the middle. He’d leave behind clean lines in the ice as he weaved around the slower skaters. Ilya looks back down at his own skates. They’re rentals, and a jarring industrial blue. Not the shiny finish of Shane’s skates, no. It’s the kind of plastic that makes you scrunch your nose up in disgust. He runs his fingers across the dozens of scratches and scuff marks. He’d leave odd-shaped gashes in the ice after ramming himself into the boards in an effort to slow down. “I wish I could skate like you.” Ilya bumps the toe of his skates against the boards. “Well, if you come here every Tuesday, I can teach you,” Shane says, glancing behind his back. “Oh, really?” Ilya asks, his accent still clipped. “Yeah.” Ilya never returns to the rink. His family moves again, chasing work and a life that he’s never quite entirely sure belongs to him. He clutches a small, crumpled hockey trading card Shane had signed for him as a joke. All he can think about in the car is the distance growing between them as the engine revs, away from the only boy who didn’t care that Ilya was the “weird foreign kid” that nobody wanted to get close to. A sign overhead whizzes past, and Ilya can barely make out the words on it as he clambers to peer through the backseat windows.
