“Is it your wedding day?”
Shane sputters. “Sorry?”
“The tuxedo,” she points out. “You look like you just got married.”
“Oh,” Shane says dumbly, glancing down at his rumpled suit. “No,” he adds.

Newly traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, Ilya Rozanov is so close to having everything he’d never thought he was allowed to want. He can see the man he loves more than four times a year, he’s surrounded by a team who supports him through his injury, and Shane’s parents have unhesitatingly accepted him as part of the family.
Except his lingering concussion symptoms have kept him sidelined from hockey, his boyfriend is still two hours away, their schedules are a disaster, and Shane’s team is, well…it’s full of assholes. There must be a way to make this all work out.

He reached into his pocket for his phone and fuck– he was still wearing Rozanov’s clothes. They smelt like him. He couldn’t go back inside now to get his own, that would make for even more embarrassment. I just need to get out of here, far away. He opened his phone and tried to call an Uber, but his vision was so blurry from unshed tears, he couldn't see a thing on the screen. What the fuck was he doing? Ilya is never going to talk to him again and he’s out here on the ground having a fucking panic attack. Or, what if when Shane leaves Ilya on the couch, he only makes it past the front door before breaking down?

Realistically, Shane is more than aware he’s being irrational. There’s absolutely no reason for him to be freaking out the way he currently is. Shane is literally his name. All Rozanov did was call him his own name. Rozanov calls him by his name all the time. But it’s always his last. Never just Shane. Even though he’s been called that his whole life, the word feels unbearably intimate, coated in Rozanov’s annoyingly attractive russian accent. And that thought terrifies him. Or The tuna melt scene went differently, causing Shane and Ilya to realize their feelings a lot sooner.

“Be careful,” Shane frets, one hand hovering over Ilya’s shoulder. “It’s icy, and I don’t want to be a widower.” “Oh, we’d have to be much higher than this for the fall to kill me,” Ilya says, gaze still fixed on the cool black skyline. “At least seven stories.” It’s not until much later, as the waitress is clearing the dishes from dinner, that Yuna finds herself wondering why Ilya knows exactly how high a fall needs to be in order to kill him. Or: Yuna learns about Ilya's past bit by bit over the years.

On good days it was a low pressure system, dull and manageable. On bad days it rolled in without notice, sharp enough to steal his breath for a second, but never long enough to justify leaving the ice. He felt the creeping increase like the buzz of static in the air before a thunderstorm, the way you could detect rain in the air long before it fell. There was a quiet pride in that, even if he didn’t like to admit it. // 5 times Shane hides a chronic flare-up, and the 1 time he lets himself get looked after.

there I saw you standing (must have been a holy light) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

There’s a sudden cacophony of yells. As Shane turns to find the source of the noise, the only thing he can see is red splattered across the ice and a #81 jersey.
For an absurd moment, all he can think is “my parents are at this game. Hayden and Jackie are in the stands. Thank god the kids aren’t here.”
He doesn’t remember moving, but the next thing he knows, he’s kneeling in a pool of blood with his hands on Ilya’s neck, certain that he was about to die.

commotio cordis (comes with the territory) by Anonymous
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.
__________
Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.
Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—
Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.

Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.
It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.

Ilya watches Shane cross the room and grab a chair from the corner, dragging it into the center of the room. Right next to the foot of the bed. Shane pats the back of the chair, making sure to keep his expression neutral. “Sit,” he instructs, sounding more confident than he feels. Ilya raises an eyebrow but gets to his feet. “You do not want me on the bed?” He asks, sounding more than a little confused. “No,” Shane replies simply, patting the chair again. ~ Or: When Ilya shows up unexpectedly at his door, Shane finally gets sweet revenge for Las Vegas. Ilya opened one of his messages. Have you seen the news? Ilya, call me. Now. Please tell me you already fucking know. Jesus Christ, man. That was it. No context. No explanation. Just panic wrapped in vague bullshit. His jaw locked. “Are you fucking serious right now,” he muttered, thumb scrolling harder than necessary. Say it or don’t, you assholes. The half-answers made his skin crawl. It felt like they were all circling something awful, whispering around it, waiting for him to step close enough to get hit. His chest felt tight now, pressure building, so he did the one thing that made sense. He opened social media. Shane Hollander’s name was everywhere. Or Shane was hurt in ways everyone could see, and in ways only Ilya would carry.
