  3. "Sorry. Just realized something just now.," Ilya laughs. "What?" "Loons," Ilya says and laughs again. "Loons?" Yuna repeats confused. "When I went to the cottage last summer Shane made fun of me because I never heard the loon call before. I was so scared. I called it stupid canadian wolf bird," Yuna lets out a little laugh, Ilya continues - "I just realized that these ducks on my baby blanket, they look like..." "Loons," Yuna finishes with smile tugging on her lips. "Yes. Loons. Shane will make fun of me," Ilya groans but not maliciously. He takes the blanket out of Yuna's hands and brings it to his face, trying to see if it still smells like home, like his mom. But the smell was gone and his heart lurches. (...) "Tell me the stories. 9. “I could marry Svetlana.” Ilya says it the way he does in real life. Loose. Half-amused. Like he’s commenting on the weather or the merits of a toaster. "And I could have a gun. What's new?" Shane thinks. Shane can't hide the hurt in his eyes as he meets Ilya's gaze, calm and collected. "She's American, it would be easy citizenship," he pauses, typing on his phone absentmindedly. "She would do it. Her father is goalie Sergei Vitrov." Shane scoffs, "Yeah, you've told me." "She would help me..." Ilya says in a singsong tone. or; what if Shane never says "Don't Marry Svetlana" and dreams about it? Inspired by the song "Dream Cheater" by Precious Pepala

  13. Instead of Shane, it is Ilya who suffers a concussion during the Boston-Montreal game in April 2017. Dazed and agitated, Ilya briefly starts speaking and responding only in Russian and the medics can’t calm him down. Luckily, Shane started studying Russian after Ilya spoke to him in Russian on the phone from Moscow. For no particular reason. Certainly not because he’s fallen in love with Ilya Rozanov.

In Montreal with lingering concussion symptoms, Ilya is advised not to fly home for a few days, and the hospital won’t release him without assurances that he has someone to stay with him until his symptoms improve. Luckily, Shane conveniently has a condo in Montreal no one knows about and a few days before he has to travel again.

But Ilya’s symptoms don’t resolve after a few days. Which is okay; Shane can handle it. He can take care of Ilya, study Russian, lead his team into the playoffs, and keep Ilya’s continued presence in Montreal a secret. He can do everything, no problem. He is Shane Hollander after all.

  14. Ilya smiles and leans in, his lips a few centimeters away from Shane's. "I thought you would not want me getting germs all over the place. You have game in a few days, you wouldn't want to be sick for that." "So you're allowed to play sick, and I'm not?" he asks. Ilya nods again, the tip of his nose bumping Shane's. — Ilya Rozanov hasn't been cared for while sick in decades. This, predictably, brings up some feelings when the Hollanders try to do just that.

  17. Ilya is sick. Shane comes to the rescue. Fluff ensues. "Ilya was sick, and he was furious. He did not get sick. Certainly not sick enough to get benched for a night, and yet here he was, staring at his reddened eyes as he gripped the sink in his stupid apartment, resisting the urge to cough." Or: What if Ilya had gotten sick and thus not been playing during a Boston/Montreal game in Boston? What if Shane had come to take care of him? What if they had finally had a moment where both of their walls had been down, far earlier in their relationship?

  18. Okay, fuck, he really needs to get in contact with someone who knows something about whether or not his boyfriend is still breathing right now because he can't keep thinking like this. He squeezes his eyes shut, forcing the tears to go away and he calls his mom back, holding the phone up to his ear, hoping that she, somehow, has some kind of update for him; he knows that Ilya made Yuna her emergency contact a while ago, just in case, so if anybody is going to be able to tell him anything it’s going to be her. Unless she hasn’t heard any news, unless he’s dead at the crash site and they can’t identify his body, unless they- ”He’s okay,” His mom says the moment she answers the phone, barely even letting it ring one time and, yeah, she really does know her son. She knows that that had to be the very first thing out of her mouth before anything, otherwise Shane would spiral. (As if he hasn’t already been spiraling.) * OR, the plane from The Long Game actually crashes, Ilya gets injured, Shane rents a car to drive down to him, and he takes care of him.

  19. “C’mon, it’s Christmas.” “I did not know Christmas was for doing stupid things.” “Christmas,” Shane starts, crawling on all fours to get up and tower over Ilya, a new set of determination over his sleepy eyes, “is about being more indulgent.” His face dips down until their noses greet one another as softly as butterfly wings, breaths in sync, and chests brushing. The urge to kiss him is stronger than last night’s storm. Or, Ilya and Shane spend Christmas together.

  20. Fuck, he couldn’t let Hollander see him like this. An echo of his fathers voice played in his head, “ты слаб, Ilya.” You are weak. —— Ilya has a hard time accepting help from anyone, especially when he’s sick. Good thing Shane Hollander doesn’t take no for an answer. Ilya arrived at the cottage before Shane. His boyfriend had one more game in the afternoon before he could get there for their long weekend getaway so Ilya had packed for both of them and made the drive himself. It was weird being in the cottage by himself, he thought as he put their bags down and stared out the window admiring the view of the lake. Then his stomach churned and he groaned walking away to sit down heavily on the couch. He’d started to feel…not well this morning but he insisted that Shane go to his game and he’d powered through the long drive to get here. The cold, clean air of the cottage would be good for him, he thought, and anyway it's not like Ilya ever got really ill. Shane was a different story with his weak stomach and frequent migraines that he’d inherited from his mother but Ilya was always healthy. A workhorse, his father had said once. Strong, Capable, Dependable. But maybe, he could just take a little nap now he thought to himself as he lay down on the couch and closed his eyes. That way he’d be ready to ravish his boyfriend when he showed up. He woke up hours later to darkness and a pounding in his head. Ilya squinted, grabbing for his phone. It was already six pm. Fuck, Shane would be here soon. It took too much effort to swing his legs off the side of the couch and he swayed as he stood up, holding onto the back of the couch for support. “Blyat,” he cursed under his breath as his head throbbed and his vision blurred dangerously. His stomach lurched and he remembered why he’d woken up in the first place. He rushed to the bathroom and made it just in time to fall to his knees on the tile and puke up his meager lunch. Trembling, he stood up and hastily brushed his teeth with shaking hands. Fuck, he couldn’t let Hollander see him like this. An echo of his fathers voice played in his head, “ты слаб, Ilya.” You are weak. Ilya carefully made his way back to the couch, trying not to irritate his stomach or his head anymore than he already had. He sat perched on the edge of the couch, head in his hands, until he heard a knock on the door. Shane let himself in and Ilya stood up, trying to muster up a proper greeting. “Hi,” he breathed. He must have failed because Shane’s smile faltered and his hands came up to cup Ilya’s cheeks. “Are you feeling okay?” He said, his brow furrowing in concentration like Ilya was another puzzle for him to solve. Ilya pouted at him, “now you say I look bad.” “No, no, not that it’s just…you're really pale, are you sure you're okay?” Ilya sighed, “I was a little sick before, I’m fine now.” Shane looked like he didn’t believe him so Ilya pressed forward, crushing their mouths together and raising one hand to grip the back of Shane’s head, running his fingers through his hair. At the small noise his boyfriend made in response Ilya instantly felt better. He stepped back, pulling them both towards the couch when a sudden sharp pain went through his head. It felt like someone punched him in the skull and Ilya dropped Shane’s hands, swearing and sitting down on the couch as the room spun. “-lya?” Shane was saying, his fingers tugging at where Ilya had his head buried in his hands. “Are you okay?” Shane said. All he could do was shake his head carefully in response. Shane sat down next to him on the couch, rubbing comforting circles on his back until Ilya was able to speak again. “Sorry.” ты слаб “No,” Shane insisted, “don’t be sorry, fuck its my fault, I thought you looked sick this morning and I left anyway.” “I’m-” he started to say before Shane cut him off. “If you say you're fine, I swear to god Ilya.” “Okay,” he muttered, a small smile curling at his lips, “Mr. Nurse.” “Whatever,” Shane huffed, he pressed the back of his hand to Ilya’s forehead and Ilya leaned into it despite himself, the cold felt so good. “You're burning up,” Shane pointed out. Ilya hummed in response. “Okay, let me see what meds we have here,” Shane said, standing up and walking away towards the kitchen. Ilya missed him immediately. He returned a moment later with a glass of water, a handful of little red pills, and a thermometer. “Open,” he said, holding up the thermometer.
