  1. Hayden Pike met Shane Hollander when they were both 17. Now, a decade later, he thinks he knows him pretty well. Or: Hayden Pike figures it out, or maybe he knows all along; not knowing in a literal sense maybe, but in the way one knows one’s best friend, the way one soul knows another: so it’s less a matter of finding out, but more one of - oh, there you are, how nice it is to see all of you. Or: Hayden Pike has always thought Shane Hollander might be gay. Ilya Rozanov was only a little bit more of a surprise. WARNING: some spoilers for the end of Heated Rivalry (the book)

  2. Ilya had realized it the moment he’d opened his eyes a few days prior, too warm under the covers to be comfortable. Nothing had even happened yet, but he'd felt immediately distant from himself. Like somewhere between sleeping and waking, he’d stepped out of his body and into another.

Hayden knows what he saw. Clear as day, right there in the middle of Shane’s text thread with Lily. A dick pic. Hayden keeps mindlessly scrolling Instagram—a pantomime of paying attention, not really taking in anything that’s passing across his screen. Mind racing as a series of realizations wash over him. Christ, no wonder Shane was so cagey about Lily. No wonder he didn’t want to introduce her to the guys. Hayden would like to believe that everyone would be chill with it, but he could think of at least five guys off the top of his head that would a hundred percent take issue with Shane dating a trans woman. He can imagine, far too easily, the kind of slurs that would get thrown around the locker room if anyone ever found out. Towards Lily, sure, but towards Shane too —because Shane had to be gay, if his girlfriend had a dick, right? Or, Hayden finds out something that he was never supposed to, and decides that the only thing he can do is show his best friend that he can be the best ally ever, if he just gives him the chance.

  4. About three minutes ago Shane had smacked his phone down on the bed with too much force. It had tumbled off, landing screen up next to Hayden’s bed. A picture of Ilya Rozanov’s dick taking up half of the screen. Shane had to watch in horror how his best friend picked up the phone, barely glanced at it and then almost dropped it after a second look.

So he had blurted out the first excuse that came to mind, which was ‘I think I’m gay but I’m not sure’. That had made Hayden disregard the picture completely. Instead of asking whose dick it was, he had told Shane to kiss him.

  6. When a particularly hard hit during an All Star practice scrimmage turns to an actual fist fight, Hayden Pike and Ilya Rozanov end up in timeout. or Coach Murdock puts Hayden in a broom closet with his best friend's rival turned boyfriend and he uses the opportunity to give Ilya Rozanov a “shovel talk.” Standalone fic! Ilya Rozanov was a fucking asshole. So was Coach Murdock, who was coaching the All-Star Team and who, after Hayden and Rozanov got into a fight during a practice. It actually went to blows. Shane would be pissed when he found out about it. This All Star Game might be the final nail in the coffin of the fucking fan voted fantasy draft that was some marketing scheme cooked up to get more people into hockey. Either way, Hayden had a split lip and there was already a bruise forming over Ilya’s eye. Yeah, Shane was going to be super pissed. At least he’d be pissed at both of them. At least, Hayden hoped he’d be mad at Rozanov too, seeing as he started it by slamming Hayden into the boards during a scrimmage. Hayden had told Rozanov to fuck off and shoved him and somewhere in the mix it had become an actual fight. Okay, so maybe Hayden wasn’t the best at controlling his emotions and Rozanov knew exactly how to get under Hayden’s skin and burrow in like a tick. Coach Murdock took both of them to a room not much bigger than a penalty box, opened it, made both of them stand inside of it and then said: “Work it out, kill each other, I don’t care but you better come back ready to play hockey instead of boxing.” Hayden ignored Rozanov at first. “This does not seem to be working it out or killing each other. We should listen to our coach.” Rozanov had settled on his own crate and was being annoying. “Do you ever shut the fuck up?” Hayden snapped. Rozanov’s eyes twinkled with amusement. The fucker loved messing with Hayden. “W e, Russians, we talk all the time.” Hayden admittedly did not know enough Russians that weren’t hockey players (who were a mouthy bunch in general) to confirm or refute that. “Well, maybe if you could stop talking, I can calm down and we can go back out there.” “But we haven’t decided if we’re going to figure it out or kill each other,” Rozanov winked. His eyes were very pretty. Hayden couldn’t lie. Rozanov was objectively attractive, especially according to Jackie’s friends, who hated Rozanov as much as anyone in Montreal did but who couldn’t deny that he had a look about him. Rozanov, who could apparently read minds, smirked. “Do you think I’m pretty, Pike?” The blush happened instantly, a family curse. “Oh you do!” Rozanov cheered. “Fuck off!” Hayden bit out. He was such a dick. “Too bad for you, I am taken,” Rozanov grinned and he actually looked like he was stupid fucking in love when he did that. It made him harder to hate but also- “Shane told you I know?” He asked, keeping his voice low. He doubted anyone was listening but you could never be too careful. “I was surprised you figured it out.” Rozanov said with a nod. “He’s my best friend,” Hayden pointed out. “Yes but you are, in Russia we say, not everyone is home. In English, it’s something about a bad knife in the drawer.” He stroked his stubble. “Not the sharpest knife in the drawer,” Hayden corrected and then groaned when Rozanov smiled. “Yes exactly! You are not the sharpest knife in the drawer.” Rozanov was still grinning. “I’m very sharp,” Hayden returned. He had also been the victim of more than one concussion so maybe a little less sharp than average. Rozanov laughed again. Hayden was considering the coach's suggestion of killing Rozanov but Shane would probably be a lot pissed off if Hayden did that. “Tell me, do I bother you, Pike?” Rozanov asked. “Yes,” Hayden answered without thinking. Rozanov hummed. “Why?” “You’re an asshole,” Hayden responded. “Yes, but so is Boiziau and you and him are friends,” Rozanov said. “Why am I special?” “Well, I thought you hated my best friend,” Hayden said. Shane and Rozanov had supposedly been rivals and along the way Hayden started hating Ilya too. “I love him,” Rozanov said like it was simple, like it was easy, like it was breathing. Hayden understood that, but it made his heart warm that someone cared like this about his best friend. “He tells me to stop teasing you, but I do not want to.” Even if that someone was an asshole. Speaking of: “Shane is my best friend-“ Hayden opened. “I am his best friend,” Rozanov corrected. “You are second best.”

  7. “I don’t want to look at you right now.” Ilya’s voice is raw but firm. “I don’t want to talk to you. Go home.” Leaving the towel bunched up on the counter, he tries to leave. No fucking way. Shane steps into his path and stops him. There is no way he’s letting Ilya walk away like that. And why the fuck is Ilya the one who is upset? He’s the one who brought up that stupid party in the first place. And he’s the one who can’t answer one fucking question. “Would you choose me?” Shane discovers how tired Ilya is of hiding and how much it hurts him that no one knows. Shane also discovers that he’s the asshole in this scenario and decides to change that, fuck the consequences. He can panic about it another day.

  11. Five times Ilya lied (but not really) to his teammates about Shane, and one time he didn’t have to.

Inspired by two Cliff Marlow lines: In the airport, when their game with Montreal gets cancelled and he tells Ilya, “Whoever she is, she’s gonna get over it,” and the scene in the locker room when he says, “Wow, this Montreal girl works you up, brother—you’re straight up blushing, Roz.”

  12. And so Shane steps into the Voyageurs' locker room, Luca on his heels, leaving the door open just a crack so Ilya and the others can hear what's going on. The room goes quiet immediately, all faces turning to Shane in shock. Hayden's the first to react, scrambling up from his stall, eyes wide. "Shane? What's going on?" "I just wanted to see if any of you were willing to talk? So quiet on the ice today. I thought you'd have things to say to me, all things considered." Shane sweeps his gaze over his former team, uses his disappointed-Captain-voice and feels a smidge of smugness when it clearly hits them as it always has. "So say them to my fucking face, not behind my back." --- Shane needs to clear the air with the Montreal Voyageurs. Post-Book 6: The Long Game.

  13. Smacking a kiss onto Shane's cheek like he did after the All-Stars, Ilya grins in challenge. Shane's not taken off his helmet yet, so the angle was awkward, but when he glances nervously at the team around them no one seems judging, so he smiles shyly. Ilya's open affection is a lot to get used to. Even after a while with this team, he still fears they'll react badly, but they never do. In fact, their team members seem elated. "You tell him, Captain!" Bood laughs. "We should hang a banner. Danger: Beware of Ilya Rozanov's husband." "Why do you get a victory kiss and we don't, Roz?" Troy calls teasingly. --- Or, the one in which Hollzy gets kisses.
