  6. "Sorry. Just realized something just now.," Ilya laughs. "What?" "Loons," Ilya says and laughs again. "Loons?" Yuna repeats confused. "When I went to the cottage last summer Shane made fun of me because I never heard the loon call before. I was so scared. I called it stupid canadian wolf bird," Yuna lets out a little laugh, Ilya continues - "I just realized that these ducks on my baby blanket, they look like..." "Loons," Yuna finishes with smile tugging on her lips. "Yes. Loons. Shane will make fun of me," Ilya groans but not maliciously. He takes the blanket out of Yuna's hands and brings it to his face, trying to see if it still smells like home, like his mom. But the smell was gone and his heart lurches. (...) "Tell me the stories. All of them." *** Or: Ilya has the flu when he recieves a package from Svetlana containing his childhood memorabilia from Russia. Mother son duo Ilya Rozanov and Yuna Hollander strikes again ❤

  7. "I can't wait for them to put your tooth back in," Shane tells him when they get back home after the game. "What? You do not like sticking your tongue through my hole?" "Ew. No, I do not like it when you push my tongue into the spot where your missing tooth is." OR boston fans attack ilya before a game but he is determined not to let it ruin his season "I am so fucking sorry." Hayden repeats again. Shane nods, his chest is tight and that is as much of a response as he can manage. Yuna finds the words for him. "It's okay Hayden. We all know it was an accident." The crisis response team has gathered at Shane's house in Montreal. Shane's parents, Hayden and Jackie, mill around the living room. Farah, Shane and Ilya's shared agent joins them over a video call. "I knew we shouldn't have given the kids screens. Let alone ones that connect to the internet." Jackie sighs. Hayden's phone had been glitching so he signed onto Instagram on the girls' tablet to scroll. He had left his account logged in and somehow Ruby had managed to post a video to his account. Not just any video, but a video the kids had taken on the day Shane and Ilya had spent babysitting them. It showed the two men exchanging their vows, dressed up in play clothes standing in the Pike's living room. It showed their quick kiss, and the dance party that followed and the longer, more tender kisses they had stolen when the kids weren't looking. "I just still can't get over how I wasn't invited to my own son's wedding." David jokes. A small laugh comes from around the room. Shane brain is stormy with anxiety but he manages to fire enough neurons to put a small smile on his face. "I didn't even notice the girls were taping us." The video, admittedly, was very cute. If it had been kept private Shane would've cherished it. But despite Hayden deleting it minutes after it was posted, it had blown up and was all over the internet. "It is nice that we have a video," Ilya says, returning from the next room where he had been taking a phone call. He places his hands on Shane's shoulders and tries to squeeze some of the tension out of them. "Of the happiest moment of my life." "You know I still expect a real wedding, right?" Yuna says seriously. "One with an officiant and flowers." "We will have a big wedding." Ilya smiles and leans down to kiss Shane's cheek. "With a giant cake, and hundreds of people on a private island. Maybe fireworks, yes?" As nice as it was to imagine a big wedding to love of his life, the shadow of reality was still looming darkly over Shane's head. "If we both lose our jobs in the NHL it might be hard to afford a big wedding," Shane mutters. "But that's not going to happen. Right Farah?" Yuna says. It takes a second for Farah to unmute herself. "We're not going to let that happen. The commissioner may not be happy about this but you've got a lot of people on your side. The fans, your teammates, and our lawyers are suiting up. We're ready to fight whatever the league throws our way." "She is right. I just finished call with Coach Wiebe. He says we have his full support. Both of us." Ilya states. "We're here for you. Anything you guys need. Really." Hayden adds. Shane lets out a sigh. It's not quite relief, but something inside of him starts to settle. It's tough at first. The first few practices, the first road trip after they are outed are tough. Shane's team gives him icy looks. Some hockey fans travel to Ottawa with homophobic signs and are kicked out of the arena. There's a media circus about it. But soon another hockey scandal comes and takes some of the attention away. A Carolina player tests positive for steroids, and he's benched. There are good changes too. More and more hockey fans bring pride flags to games. Articles are written about the hockey husbands. And Shane and Ilya can go out in public. At first, they start with private restaurants, walking trails. Then there's a charity gala and they are photographed on the red carpet together. And they look good together. Really good. They are asked if they want to be on the cover of OUT magazine together. They discuss the opportunity over the phone, while lounging in their respective hotel rooms. "I don't know. Wouldn't it kind of be pushing it in everyone's face?" Shane worries. "I want it in their faces. They should be jealous of me and my hot boyfriend," Ilya makes a kissy face and smiles. Shane chuckes. "Yeah. I mean it would be fun. And it might be nice to finally have photos together where we aren't in hockey gear." "Yes. I want a photo with you in sexy clothes. We should practice our modeling. You should send me a picture." "The only problem is I think I forgot to pack my sexy clothes." "Ah. No worries. No clothes will work too." The photoshoot goes viral. Not so much with the hockey fans, but the rest of the internet eats it up. People use the photos as reaction pics on twitter. A few influencers try and recreate the elaborate athletic poses featured, which turns into a TikTok challenge of its own. They partner with a charity supporting homeless LGBTQ youth to auction off a signed Hollander-

  8. Because Ilya knew how Shane liked to be treated, and the Shane Hollander who dropped like a fucking rock from being denied in a filthy bathroom, even after begging for it with half the hockey world outside, would love dirty talk. Honestly, fuck his father, fuck homophobia, fuck English, and fuck his shitty brain from keeping them from having what Ilya was sure would be the best fucking sex of their lives. At the cottage, Ilya lets the most terrifying confession of his life slip when he tells Shane he loves him. On the bright side, now that Ilya's no longer afraid of blurting out his feelings during sex, this obviously meant he could step up his dirty talk beyond foreplay and muttered directions. But when Shane takes one of Ilya's commands literally and shuts down, they have to learn what they never had the safety to indulge in before this: honesty not only in how they fit together but what they choose to share.

  9. While Shane is out talking with his mom about his sexuality and her unquestionable acceptance, Ilya and his father are inside having a heart-to-heart of their own. Shane's father is so… nice. Easy, kind. Not constantly demanding that Ilya performs more, provides more, gives more, wins more, more, more, more— "So, uh." Shane's father cuts through the fog of Ilya's thoughts. "How do you feel about all of this?" What sort of question was that? "Uh, good, I guess." Ilya shrugs, before remembering that David's son is probably out there having a panic attack with his crying wife.

"Because it's none of your business? What the fuck?" "Aw, so you don't kiss and tell?" Hayden teased, laughing when Shane's blush deepened. He shoved at his shoulder, trying to wipe the smile from his face. "Relax, dude. I'm only messing with you. You don't have to tell me anything. But, like, we can talk about this shit. Sex, you know. I don't care that it's between two guys. Honestly, it's kind of interesting-" "Jesus Christ," Shane muttered. "This is not how I thought this was going to go.”

  15. He felt Rozanov’s eyes drag over him lazily, uncaring that Shane was watching him. He’d never been looked at like this, with such…hunger. It made his stomach flip but he did not close his shorts-clad legs even when he felt Rozanov’s eyes drift lower then lower still. His eyes didn’t waver, didn’t flinch at the lack of a bulge that they both knew should have been there. —- Shane Hollander is the first transgender gay hockey player in the league and absolutely no one can know but Ilya Rozanov seems like a good secret keeper.

  16. For as long as Ilya has remembered, there were five letters neatly printed in the crease of his arm either in vivid black or as a ghost of his memory. He is four when he learns that it is a soulmark. He is six when he realises his parents do not have each other's names. He is eight when he works out the name is probably from the English speaking world. He is ten when he works out it is a boy’s and receives a slap across the face for asking. He is twelve when he buries his hopes with his mother. Fate is what men make for themselves, hopes and opportunities his father states harshly, hand on each son’s shoulder at the funeral but Ilya sees the pill bottle in his dreams as if it is as real as the alcohol on the coffee table and thinks maybe what his father made was graves for more than just his mother. He is fourteen, fresh off international scouts noticing him for the first time, when his father takes him to a clinic with a leaking ceiling and a stone faced doctor who takes a stack of notes and a bottle of vodka, the expensive kind, and lasers the soulmate mark off him as Ilya screams and begs. He carves each letter of Shane’s name into the wooden slat under his bed as tears of pain and frustration blur his vision and he promises himself he will escape. He’s sixteen when he feels the scar at his arm tingle as he watches the Canadian junior team face off against the Americans. Shane. It cannot be. His arm tingles every time Shane has the puck. It does not matter, his father hisses, realising the same moment Ilya does, grabbing his arm and viciously stabbing his still lit cigarette into the scarred flesh. ‘That is done with, Ilya.’. His arm burns but not as harshly as the eyes Ilya cannot pull from the screen. Another burn. Another. Every hit perfectly placed for the letters that no longer show on Ilya’s flesh. He’s seventeen when he meets his soulmate, and he knows it's him, he can feel it, and Shane is so kind but Ilya has been trained to only respond to harsh demands and expectations, informing him there are many Ilyas’ in Russia. Hope blooms and he’s ready to follow, anywhere really, anywhere that isn’t back to where he came from because Shane is where he is supposed to be but he has to check and its heavy, the weight of his father’s victory when Shane says ‘yeah I guess you are right’ and leaves with his handshake and his polite smile and the remains of Ilya’s heart in his hands. He’s twenty seven when Shane tells him he’s pretty sure there are millions of Ilya’s in the world but only one for him, face set and determined as he stands barefoot and ready to fight. One arm is still in a sling and bruises are fading into his face, and to Ilya he has never looked more beautiful. Ilya got used to taking what he could get, ignoring the imprint of his own name on Shane’s foot, aided by Shane’s quirk of keeping his socks on and how shy he is in general, reaching for his clothes before Ilya has come down from the high and retreating back behind the wall only Ilya is allowed to pass. “Mine is gone, my father-” “Your father is dead,” Shane snaps, and then the anger seems to drain out of him as he grabs Ilya’s wrist with his good hand and slowly traces his hand up his arm to the crease of his elbow, touching the scarred flesh, “I’m here.” Simple. Ilya could say a thousand different things and they would be a thousand different people’s words. Shane grows nervous in his silence and takes a step back, a cold horrible feeling spreading in Ilya’s stomach when he does it. He’s blowing it. The moment he hoped for, denied he hoped for, hoped for again, and he’s blowing it. “Ilya…I get it ok? I’m weird and boring and you probably think that I’m no fun and wish it was someone else but-” “No!” Shane was the one who walked away from Ilya. Only so far though, only ever so far, as if they were not just soulmates but linked by a red string of fate carrying across the oceans, between continents, drawing them both to the ice that could unite them. Hockey has been Ilya’s downfall and his salvation, his family in ruins and yet Shane in front of him. It was the excuse for him to be forbidden, it is the very reason he probably should still be forbidden and yet it is fate. There is nothing more natural in the universe than stepping forward and dropping to his knees and pressing his index and middle finger to his own name at Shane’s ankle. “I am sorry. My mark…” “It’s still there Ilya,” Shane murmurs as he awkwardly crouches and returns his hand to its former place, over the marred skin, “It feels…right? Mine is where no one can see it. Yours is…no one would know. But we know, Ilya. We know. Come to the cottage. Give us a chance.” “I did. I said to you,” and he has to pause and regain his composure, the wall that only Shane gets passed on his side, “I tell you, many Ilya’s in Russia. That day. In juniors. I….was waiting.” “I know,” Shane murmurs, “M’sorry. I was scared. But Ilya….m’not afraid anymore.” Ilya cups his chin and feels Shane tremble under his touch, “This is a lie I think.” Shane inhales and then exhales deeply, and Ilya thinks there are many better places for this conversation than kneeling on the floor of the hotel room Ilya should have left days ago but he couldn’t bring himself to leave the city while Shane was still in the hospital. “Okay, I’m terrified,” Shane says flatly, blinking rapidly as he makes himself hold Ilya’s gaze, and no matter how hard it is with people when it matters he always holds Ilya’s gaze, “But I’m not afraid of us anymore, Ilya. Come home.” Home.

He exits the airport half-hoping that Shane has chickened out of the whole thing. 19. When Shane was freshly sixteen, Yuna came home to find him freaking out by himself at the kitchen island. He was perched on one of the bar stools with his entire torso slumped across the counter and his arms extended in front of him, hands balled into fists on the granite. His head was buried between his shoulders and he didn’t sound like he was breathing. Yuna didn’t say anything for a solid thirty seconds.
