21 – 40 of 60 Works in Good Parent David Hollander
- Good Parent David Hollander ×
-
But it’s true. David Hollander is normal about hockey. He has a life outside it. He goes to work at the Treasury. He goes on long walks. He volunteers at animal shelters. He puzzles. Well—he works on puzzles? Ilya still is not sure how the verbs work there.
The point is: David Hollander built a life outside of hockey that was fulfilling—that remains fulfilling. This, in its roundabout way, and though Ilya could never admit it, saves Ilya’s life.

“What does it fucking matter?” The voice is more familiar like this, in the brief burst of anger that came with those words. David had heard it on TV and in videos on his phone countless times over the last decade. He may not have put it together, except this entire hotel was reserved specifically for the All-Star teams and their families, and there weren’t many Russians in attendance except for- David’s son was secretly dating Ilya Rozanov. -- Or, why David was so calm when the rest of the world found out about Shane and Ilya.

After a moment, Hayden pulls back. Then he hands her the phone—Shane’s phone. “I grabbed this when I was getting his stuff and I saw, well.” He looks away from Yuna, briefly glances at David, then looks away from him too. There’s an oddly guilty look on his face that has Yuna suspicious at once. “Um, has Shane told you guys about Lily?” -- AKA, Yuna and David find out about Lily, Shane’s... girlfriend?, while he's in the hospital. It's a while before they find out about Ilya. Featuring: - high Shane - Ilya angst - theories about who Lily could be - Yuna & "Lily" texting - identity shenanigans

Ilya is recovering after the brain surgery but recovery rerely is a straight line. And Ilya, done with hospitals, is up to mischief. Fortunately, Shane is there to make sure Ilya stays alive. *** This is set between "Hold On (I Still Want You)" and "Come Back (I Still Need You)" and focuses on Ilya's recovery after the brain surgery he underwent. It can be read as stand-alone but I think it's probably best to read at least first part of my series to get some context!

“Hey Siri, call Lily.” After a pause, “Hey Siri, put it on speaker,” was the next slurred command to come from the concussed hockey star. All Andrea could do was watch in a state of both fascination and horror as the call was picked up after two rings. “Shane? Are you okay?” “Ilyyaaa! It’s your voice! How did they do that?” Shane looked at the device in awe. Ilya’s confusion and genuine concern was audible. “What? Shane, what do you mean?” “Ah!” Shane exclaimed, giggling into his hands. “Hi!” He looked up, then in a stage whisper, he said, “my nurse is still here. So be quiiiiiiiet.” ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________ Or, Shane gets ahold of his phone and calls Ilya while under the influence of his pain meds. And of course, he calls Ilya.

Shane basks in Ilya's decision to come to the cottage for all of thirty seconds before panic sets in... Excerpt: Yuna blinked at him. "You can't just go. You’re still recovering Shane. You’re in a sling for goodness sake.” “No, I know. I…” he cleared his throat. “I know. It’s just…” he trailed off, unable to come up with a single valid reason for the nonsense he was currently spouting. Well, nothing other than all the things he couldn’t say. Rozanov was coming! To Shane’s cottage. Everything on the precipice of changing when he didn’t have any vodka in the cabinet. In the freezer? The refrigerator? Where the hell was the vodka supposed to go? His dad sometimes drank vodka…why didn’t Shane ever pay attention to where it went? He should know this shit! His man was Russian!

Shane nearly stops himself right there, runs through all of the ways he could navigate away from the question, but when he opens his mouth it comes right out anyway. "Was he hard on you too?" Or Ilya had been waiting for the other shoe to drop. He just hadn’t expected it to be about this, hadn’t expected, or maybe simply refused to accept, that his father would somehow still hurt him beyond the grave, that the punches and split lips and broken ribs would still, impossibly, ache within him after all this time. or Shane tries to talk to Ilya about his past. It doesn't go as planned.

Basically: Ilya gets concussed and the hospital calls Shane (who didn’t know that Ilya had put him down as his emergency contact) and who immediately races to Boston. (This is set during the hockey season after the last episode. They have come out to Shane’s parents and are ‘officially’ boyfriends, but Shane still plays for the Metros and Ilya still plays for Boston.)

“Because I can’t fucking do this, Ilya. I’m going to my parents’, I- I need a break, alright? Shit.” Shane’s gaze locked onto his keys and he picked them up, stalking towards the door. He needed a break from the arguing and he needed to go somewhere he could breathe and collect his thoughts, so he could process this correctly and talk about it with Ilya civilly. Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place. - Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships). or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue

Yuna thought she understood her son. She thought she understood Ilya Rozanov, too. She was wrong about both. As she watches the boy who loves her son navigate fear, love, and impossible choices, she realizes that acceptance isn’t loud, it’s in the way people stay. Or, Yuna reevaluates everything she thought she knew about Ilya, Shane, and love itself. As fear gives way to honesty, Ilya and Shane finally speak the words they’ve been carrying for years.
