  1. Shane Hollander has spent his whole career being told he and Ilya Rozanov hate each other. He's inclined to agree, right up until a hit in his rookie season puts him in a hospital bed and eleven years of a life he never had unspool behind his eyes: secret hotel rooms, a wedding, kids, a fight that nearly ended them, a crash that brought them back. He wakes up to a body that aches for a husband who was never real, and a rival standing at the end of his bed who has no idea what he means to him.
Or: Shane wakes up from a coma grieving a marriage that never happened, and decides the only way through it is to go build the real thing from scratch.

  2. After dying in a plane crash in 2021, Ilya wakes up in a nondescript hotel room, identical to hundreds he has stayed in during his decade-long NHL career. Is he in Hell? Mama is not here. Neither is Shane.

But then the phone rings; a representative from CCM wants to confirm Ilya will be on time to his photo shoot with Shane Hollander.

On the way to the rink, Ilya, who learned from the very best, makes a multi-step plan:

    1. Texting
    2. No sleeping around
    3. Friends
    4. First names
    5. Boyfriends

Ilya made Shane fall in love with him once. He can do it again.

    He has to.

  3. This is a love letter to the all the millenials like me who played it too careful and forgot to enjoy our youth. Shane and Ilya, enjoy it for me, do good. Fuck it good, fuck it right. Life is too short to live it scared.

    The arena is too loud.
That’s the first thing Shane notices; not the ice, not the lights, not the jersey on his shoulders that suddenly feels wrong in a way he can’t articulate. The sound hits him like pressure, like something physical, a wall of noise that vibrates in his chest.
He’s already bent over for the faceoff when it hits him- skates set, stick down, weight forward. His body is exactly where it’s supposed to be even if his brain is still skidding uselessly, trying to catch traction.
There’s only a split second before the puck drops.
    It stretches.
    He lifts his eyes.
    Ilya.
Young. So fucking young. Is he dreaming? Not worn by years of hockey, travel, interviews and losses and victories that stack so high they blur together. He’s young again; sharp boned, bright eyed, unable to grow a beard to save his life. Bears black and gold instead of Centaurs red. 'If I look down am I going to be pantsless too?' He thought absently, no way this was real... right?

  6. “Can I?” Shane asked quietly, staring at his lips.

Rozanov would punch him. Shane would bend time and never come down to the gym in the first place. Simple.

Except no. Rozanov put the bottle down and pulled Shane into his lap.

    What?..

    ...

Shane can travel back in time whenever he regrets something. This is particularly inconvenient for a man prone to regretting awkward conversations.

Somehow, time travel becomes therapy and these two idiots learn to talk.

  7. “Mom?” His mother moved the tea and plate of cookies closer to him, but Shane didn’t let himself get distracted. “I think I’ve had another memory lapse. Why wasn't Ilya in the play-off games? Did something happen?”

    Mom dropped her phone.

Why does she have such a weird look on her face?

    ...

Shane has memory gaps and keeps journals. Then, after the seventh game of the playoffs, he discovers they can send him back in time.

At first, he only wants to fix his relationship with his team.

    Every attempt makes things worse.

    Shane tries again.

    And again.

  9. Shane Hollander has made all the right decisions. Putting hockey above everything, abstaining from cake and lemonade, and never kissing boys, especially Russian boys with crooked grins who always saw right through him. This restraint has secured Shane a legacy as one of the greatest players of all time. Everything he ever wanted, and somehow never enough.

Ilya Rozanov is long dead, lost to fire and water in a plane crash half a century ago. But at the end of his carefully controlled life, Shane can’t stop dreaming about him, haunted by echoes of what might have been.

Given a chance to change the past, Shane has to decide what really matters: hockey, or the only bad decision he was ever tempted to make.

or: fate and Irina Rozanov have unexpectedly romantic sensibilities, and some lovers (no, Ilya that’s gross) are meant to find each other in every universe.

  12. He figures Ilya would be pretty surprised if he showed up to his house out of the blue. Surprised enough to be put off, probably. Shane is way too bad of a liar to think of any plausible excuse. If this is really happening, if Shane is actually by some miracle getting another shot at this, then he’s going to have to play this smart. His impatience to see Ilya again will have to be tempered. He’s not sure how time travel works, but he has the sneaking suspicion that one wrong move could unravel everything.

    Ilya is alive.

Just the thought of it is enough to make Shane crack his first smile in a year.

    --

AU in which Ilya dies in the Centaurs' plane crash. A year later, careless with grief, Shane drives his car into a blizzard and wakes up in Boston, in 2016. When faced with the opportunity to do it right this time, and keep Ilya for good, Shane knows that every decision he makes will be crucial. It's terrifying, but Ilya once told him that he's brave. Now it's up to Shane to prove it.

  15. “I guess your wish came true.” Shane looked at his younger self, and then at Ilya. “What wish?” Hollander asked, halting his fidgeting to pay attention to Shane. “I wished for two of you. If you cannot tell, I am a very greedy man.” Ilya emphasized his words by playfully pinching at Hollander’s ass, his other hand coming out to squeeze Shane’s thigh. - Or the one where Ilya randomly meets a witch and decides to jokingly wish for two Shane's at the same time. 16. Ilya Rozanov's life takes an unexpected turn when a deadly plane crash in 2021 takes his life, right after a fight with his long-time partner, Shane Hollander. Though instead of the afterlife, Ilya is sent back to December 2008, just before his NHL career began, on the very day that he first met Shane. He finds himself in a familiar world, with knowledge of both the future and knowledge of the man he loves and the friends he holds dear. As Ilya navigates this new reality, he rebuilds his relationship with Shane, who is still finding his path in both hockey and his identity as a gay man. With their rivalry blossoming into a different experience than the one Ilya experienced the first time around, the two face challenges around acceptance, family pressures, and the struggles of being openly gay and lovers in the sports world. Throughout their journey, Ilya contemplates his first life, cherishes the present, and strives to alter the course of their futures (and the futures of their friends) for the better. Or, Ilya Rozanov discovers first hand what the butterfly effect is, and how it can drastically alter the future.

Ilya blinks and turns to him. “I am fine. Totally fine. Better than fine, even, before today.”

    “It’s just—Shane’s acting like you’re dying, Ilya.”

“Not as far as I’m aware,” says Ilya. “And I do not think he would learn this before me.”

  18. "It had never really been in Ilya’s plans to start a Youtube channel for paranormal investigation..."

Ilya Rozanov is the playboy darling of the oft-forgotten ECHL who never quite lived up to his full potential, but he’s also known for spending the off-season hunting ghosts with his teammates Bood and Troy.

When they dare to investigate the tragic ruins of NHL legend Shane Hollander's former cottage, they are expecting to be confronted by a cursed haunting, a vengeful demon, or at the very least... some entertaining Youtube-worthy content. What Ilya is not expecting, however, is to form an inexplicable bond with the ghost of a hot hockey player and discover that nothing (literally nothing at all) is quite as it seems.

OR; Shane is a ghost, Ilya can see dead people, and it's entirely possible that they once knew each other in a past life.
