After nearly two hours there, Ilya can confidently say that his husband— the one Shane Hollander— is drunk. Shane who doesn’t usually ever drink. Shane who usually opts for just a ginger ale. Shane who has had far less drinks than Ilya has, or most of the team for that matter. Shane who is definitely drunk but a very cute drunk. He knows Shane is drunk because at some point he came over to Ilya and hasn’t left his side since. That alone doesn’t tell Ilya that Shane is drunk but what does is that Shane has been super clingy and touchy with him all night. OR Shane gets drunk at the Centaurs Stanley Cup win party and is not shy with the PDA— or the dance moves he apparently possesses.

That the heated rivalry between them was inching further and further away from rivalry, and toward something entirely different.
Two days in sunny, perfect Florida.
Or, a joint CCM shoot set in sunny, perfect Florida gets derailed by a natural disaster, and Shane and Ilya are forced to spend actual time together, forced to imagine a future. They find that it’s quite impossible to reason with hurricane season, but that the effects are better than they could have hoped for.

Except he'd been feeling like this for weeks now. Maybe longer. It was hard to tell. The days blurred when you were tired, and he’d been tired for longer than he wanted to admit. Maybe it was something still lingering in his system. That happened sometimes, right? Viruses could hang around. He'd read that somewhere. Post-viral fatigue. Yeah. That was probably it. Some dormant virus still working its way out of him. Or, Ilya and Shane are married with kids, living the life they fought for. But Ilya's depression is rearing its ugly head again.

"Everyone has a mad voice," Ilya said wisely, reaching for a fresh bobby pin. He gathered up the loose strand that had slipped free and started over, completely unruffled by the looming deadline. "You get yours from your dad." "I don't have a mad voice." The statement came from the doorway. Shane stood there holding Mila's tiny pink cardigan—the one with the pearl buttons that perfectly matched her leotard—draped over one arm. He was fully dressed now, ready to go. White dress shirt tucked in, navy tie perfectly straight, the silver tie clip Ilya had given him years back catching the morning light streaming through the window. Nobody responded. They all knew better. Or, Ilya and Shane's daughter's first ballet recital happens to fall on International Women's Day. A holiday that Ilya takes very seriously.

On one side: his rational brain; on the other, the oily, persistent whisper trying to sell him a regret he couldn’t afford. His stomach squirmed with what could either be nausea or anxiety —it all felt the same at this point. Just do it. You’ll feel so much lighter and cleaner once it is all out of your system. The temptation to believe that lie was a physical weight. He was exhausted from the fight. He could feel his dinner sitting like a stone in the pit of his stomach, heavy and stagnant. He knew he probably would feel better if he could get rid of it. But… fuck. Or Shane is struggling with a dangerous urge and is flighting a lonely battle with himself on the bathroom floor. Until Ilya reminds him that he’s not alone.
