“You don't get sick?” Shane asked, accusatory, after a few more seconds. “Da. Of course not. We are not weak like boring Canadians.” He saw Shane’s brittle resolve crack and crumble, and Ilya grinned in response. He swooped down to kiss him again. It was mostly true; but in reality Ilya was taking a moment to be selfish for himself. He knew he wouldn’t be able to see Shane for a while, and he was already a bit…disappointed? His mother had been a beta, kind and warm, but in contrast Shane burns like the sun and sometimes Ilya wonders if he is simply incapable of taking the intensity, if he is destined for the cold. For years he had tried to keep the distance between them healthy, not risk the lingering aftereffects of too long in his presence but when Shane had hit the ice, Ilya had felt something inside him freeze, something he felt would never thaw if Shane did not come back to him. Not just come back either, come back to him. All his life, Ilya has been pushed to want but only the right things and his heart cannot take the strain of his mind trying to bludgeon it into submission any longer, cannot take hit after hit like stick to puck demanding he should not and cannot desire Shane that way. Cowards tell the truth wrapped in lies and it felt like lies if Shane could not understand a damn word he had said. OR: things go differently after Shane's accident.

Right now they don’t have to consider the consequences of this reckless night they’re about to spend together; a night where all their unspoken rules are being tossed out the window in favour of simply letting their bodies be honest. They can figure all this out later, but now…now Ilya needs Shane naked and writhing beneath him before he combusts. (Or, what happens in the hotel room in Florida.)

“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course.
