Ilya went silent immediately. That was not his brother’s voice. Nor was it Katia’s, his sister-in-law. It was an aristocratic, cold voice. He went completely still.
“Yes.”
“I’m calling from the Child Services Department, Ilya Grigorievich,” the woman continued, and Ilya frowned deeply. “Your brother Alexei Rozanov and his wife died yesterday in a car accident.”
Twice in his life, Ilya had felt like this. The ice around his heart melted just enough for the numbness to vanish and give way to a sharp, stinging pain. It lasted only two seconds before he managed to compose himself. He didn’t want to feel anything for Alexei, so even if Katia’s death carried a trace of sadness—she was a mess, but she always tried to smile at him and cook warm meals for him when he visited Russia—, he dismissed the feeling entirely.
“So what?”
“You are the only living family member of their daughter. Your brother named you as her legal guardian, Ilya Grigorievich.”

“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.
“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”
He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.
When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.

Once they’re back at the cottage Ilya forgets all about that question but unfortunately Shane Hollander, his newly coined "boyfriend" has a mind that thinks too much and a mouth that while good for many things is unfortunately also good at asking questions - questions like "when?" It’s a question he’s rather not answer, not that he doesn't know the answer he does, he just doesn't particularly want to admit it out loud but for Shane, for them and their future together perhaps he can. Suddenly all Iyla can see are Shane's eyes; so full of feelings, his lashes dusted with the tears he won't ever let fall and Ilya's heart flutters in a way that he's become very familiar with, he understands the question now and he knows the answer. Then he laughs, and even he can hear that it sounds more wild than genuine. “English language is hard, yes? I meant my boys, my boys who are my friends. The Centaurs, yes?
