Rozanov's attention was always fleeting, never really guaranteed. Only resting on Shane for as long as he remained interesting. He could always find someone else. Someone less boring. The thrill and the danger of sneaking around had kept Rozanov around for as long as it did but now it seemed to have come to an end. And maybe it was better that way. OR: In which Shane goes into subdrop after Vegas and worries that Rozanov might have enough of their arrengement.

"One second, Ilya was soaring across the ice, misdirecting the Montreal player that was on his tail, and the next he was knocked off his skates, falling face first into the ice. There was a sickening crack as his helmet slammed against the ice and he saw stars, blinding pain flashing across his forehead and down the bridge of his nose." Hollanov hurt/comfort one shot! Ilya gets laid out during a game against Montreal, and Shane shows up at his apartment to take care of him. Very fluffy.

Shane has never been religious. But he found himself praying, to something, to anything, to the wind that can anchor every wish he had for Ilya—to keep him safe, to keep him healthy, to make him happy again. He thinks of Ilya’s cross on his necklace, and thinks of his Mom. Is he going to meet her now? Will he get the chance to tell her how wonderful her son grew up to be? Will he be able to tell her that he tried to love him for the both of them the best way he knew how? Or: what if it's Shane's plane that almost crashed?

He has his diet that he hates but that's fine, too, because he also has the self-control to stick to it. And maybe that's it's own reward, how good it feels to be able to be in complete control of at least one part of his life. Or, Shane isn't okay, no matter how much he tries to convince himself otherwise.

Sometimes Shane can't understand what Ilya is saying. Can't figure out how to get the sound from his ears to whatever part of his brain can translate the sounds he can recognize as English. Sometimes it's easier when Ilya speaks Russian, when Shane knows he isn't expected to respond. It's nice. But Shane doesn't think there's anything better than Ilya singing to him, soft and sure.

Shane opens his mouth a few times, like he tries to get words out without succeeding. “But it hurt you too,” he says finally. “You just wanted to check on me, your fucking boyfriend, after I got hit. And I pushed you away.” Usually, hearing Shane refer to himself as Ilya's boyfriend sends a warm shiver down his spine. But now, with that almost venomous voice, the shiver is instead cold as ice. OR, Shane gets injured during a game and Ilya is once again forced to see him unmoving on the ice. Neither of them handles the aftermath well.

“You are offending an invalid.” “You’re not an invalid,” Shane replies, slight exasperation bleeding into his voice. There’s probably panic in it, too. He elects not to think about it. “You’ll be fine. You’ll go to rehab, you’ll play, and the plan will stay intact. Okay? Charity, Ottawa, and us.” “Charity, Ottawa, and us,” Ilya repeats dutifully, head lolling on the pillow so he can get a better look at Shane’s face. The repetition soothes something in him. They are words that Shane has repeated enough that the edges have been smoothed into something blunt. Charity, Ottawa, and us. “Sit, Shane.” or: early into the year where they both still play for their respective teams, ilya suffers a crash on the ice
