  1. Most Europeans who have good magic for hockey stay in Europe. There are a few leagues that don't use magic over there, but most of them do. Russia is famous for it, and famously does shit in the international leagues that don't allow it, and phenomenally in the international leagues that allow it.

Rozanov's powers don't just guarantee him the win. The last Russian with solid Hockey powers who joined the MLH was Varkov, and while he never admitted why he made the switch, it seems obvious to Shane. He still doesn't understand why Rozanov would.

  2. When it happens the puck has just left his stick.

It's a clean hit, but Shane takes it horribly, crumbling on impact and colliding with the boards. While he tries valiantly to keep his head up, he feels himself slide sideways and his last fully coherent thought occurs as his head cracks against both the ice and the bottom edge of the boards.

Immediately, the arena starts to wilt.

“… We just want a future.”

“I have only been in love with one person…”

Shane falls backwards and sinks, the ice turning to water beneath him.

“Holy shit. I love you too…”

    “I love you…”

The words—memories?— are swimming amongst him, angled and distorted; they consume him, they’re are all he can process, even as someone else—a medic, maybe?— on the periphery now, says, "Just stay still Hollander."

  3. “Um,” Shane sighs. “It’s a curse, I guess.”
Icy dread and hot anger coalesce into a hard ball in Ilya’s chest. “What curse?”
Shane tosses his head, runs a hand through his hair. He looks out the window, because whatever is going on with him is clearly too agonizing to experience while looking directly at Ilya’s face. He crosses his arms over his chest, lurches a single step towards Ilya like he’s attached to a string pulled taut.
“Remember rookie season,” Shane says, apropos of nothing.
Ilya cuts a sharp, humorless grin. “Most of it.”
“They put you on Curse Protocol. You said it was a hazing thing. And I told you, do you remember, that I’d heard of guys—”
“Getting their dicks cursed off,” Ilya says.
“Yeah,” Shane says, eyes refusing to settle. He looks fucking hunted, like he expects to be brutally struck down in the very near future. “Well.”

Shane Hollander is not the first hockey player to be the victim of a nasty playoff curse, but this one is a little different. Ilya rises to the occasion in a couple of ways.

  4. Shane inhales, the air stinging as it scores down his throat. He can hear the rattle of his balcony door as his dad reenters the room, his parents' hushed conversation, muffled by the frantic prey-animal thunder of his heart.

    He's so fucking stupid.

Even now, as he tries to figure out what to say, words pool on his tongue, ones that he knows he won't actually be able to voice. The familiar, flat-toned voice from the monthly DOMU videos rings through his ear, perfectly neutral as his brain reminds him that the longer time arcana has to work in the body, the less of a chance you have resisting it.

OR: The Might of Montreal lingers in the gaps as Shane struggles to come to terms with everything he's discovered.

  5. Dr Shane Hollander has spent fifteen years looking for a statue most scholars believe never existed. He finally gets his vindication when it turns up on a construction site outside Florence, perfectly preserved in all its Greek-god beauty and carrying an untranslatable inscription.

It would be the best day of his life if the insufferable linguist dispatched to help decode the text didn't have the exact same face as the statue that's possessed his thoughts since he was seventeen.

  6. His quick hookup should have ended with a casual goodbye. But Shane Hollander turns out to be possibly the most dangerous thing Ilya has ever done, and there's something intoxicating about the way Shane melts underneath him.

He can't have anything Shane represents, and he isn't supposed to ask, "Can I stay?" but he does anyway.

    ~*~

Half of his team has creature-heritage of some kind, but Shane's could end his career. It doesn't matter that he's no more likely than anyone else to lose control and hurt someone. It doesn't matter that the law says he can't be fired for his heritage, or that he's not what anyone would think.

This thing with Ilya is dangerous for him in more ways than one, but Shane can't stop himself from pushing his luck every time Ilya offers him something he's not supposed to have.

  7. All Ilya Rozanov wants to do is play hockey. He’s pretty sure that it’s the only thing that he’s good at. But, when he’s twelve years old and living through the worst time of his life, Ilya discovers that hockey is not as certain as he had thought it would be. Grappling with a heritage and powers that he doesn’t understand, Ilya’s got to think about life off the ice if he ever wants to escape out from underneath the thumb of his father.

  8. When Shane was outed after a hook-up in Mexico gone public, Montréal dropped him, traded to Ottawa like he was not the captain who had begun a Voyageurs dynasty. And Shane didn’t believe in using arcane powers to get an unfair advantage in hockey (that was cheating and he had a very stringent moral code) but he did believe in karma. Good thing that Ilya Rozanov, Etsy Witch (four-point-seven stars rated) also believes in karma, and believes in discounts for cute hockey players scorned.

or - Shane Hollander wants to curse his old teammates. Ilya Rozanov is an Etsy witch. Magic definitely exists.

  10. It’s his Person.

Missed you missed you missed you, he tries to convey with no mouth and no voice and all his heart. He’s reborn the way he died; the name of his Person nestled safe against his tongue.

“Ilya,” Shane gasps, and his heart beats again.

Shane Hollander dies the second Ilya Rozanov’s plane goes down. It just takes a while for his body to catch up.

Thankfully, death isn't permanent — for either of them. Their tangled souls have been given a second chance at life, and they’re going to act like it. Which means never separating again. Ever.

After all, death can’t part them. Why should hockey?

  12. A fiery plane crash claims Ilya Rozanov’s life in January. By April, Shane Hollander is dead of a broken heart. The truth dies with them.

Yuna Hollander will do anything to get her son back, including hiring a shady shaman to resurrect him. There’s just one complication — Shane isn’t coming back alone.

Now there are codependent (not)zombies in her house wearing Ilya and Shane’s faces. When they inexplicably act more like a married couple than the bitter rivals she expected, Yuna is convinced that they came back wrong.

It’s easier than admitting she never understood them from the start.

  13. He shouldn't—he's not supposed to call her that. He's seventeen. He's an adult. Mama is for children, for people who are idiots and emotional, for the soft and tender. Alexei is not soft. He is not tender.

    He cannot be.

  16. It's kind of hilarious and tooth-rottingly sweet that the rookies are all so anxious over meeting Roz's girl. Or, wait, should it be his boy? Fuck, his Jane? Shit, Cliff doesn't fucking know. He probably should, though, but that's something to think about another day. He'll just stick with Roz's Jane for now—makes it easier for everyone, probably. Jane's been haunting Boston for for-fucking-ever, which, shit—he's definitely curious about how long their whole thing has been going on.

He glances over his shoulder, catching sight of Breezy's tense mouth, their nerves apparent as Los knocks his shoulder into Ovi's; all three are muttering together, clearly anxious for tonight to go well.

Still, how they're standing itches at him. There’s something… off about the rookies.

  17. "She's my fairy godmother," Shane says, loud enough for Ilya to hear, as he stares at himself in the mirror.

There's a long, long pause. Then Ilya laughs loudly, a genuine burst of surprise that reverberates off the doorway. "Very funny, Hollander. And you are my cute little house elf. What does that make me?"
