  1. Shane discovers that surviving four kids is harder than any playoff game and that Ilya is unfairly good at it. Hayden, meanwhile, comes home to a peaceful house, sleeping children, and the unsettling realization that his long-time on-ice rival has somehow charmed his entire family. Ilya has won a Stanley Cup, League MVP, has stared down a full arena booing him, survived a thousand chirps, and has survived Shane’s endless complains about his occasional smoking habit. None of that prepared him for bedtime at the Pike house. Why did he agree to this again? Oh right he loves Shane. Shane, admittedly didn’t look as confident in the situation either and was filled with additional dread when he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. HAYDEN: Running late. Pls don’t let them eat anything that comes in a spray can. SHANE: ??? HAYDEN: Arthur found whipped cream once. Jackie says it was a dark time. Shane stares at the message until his brain stops buffering. Then he looks up and sees the four Pike children arranged across the living room like a staged photo shoot for “Parenthood: A Horror Story.” Ruby was is sitting cross-legged on the rug with a book open, reading with the calm confidence of someone who has already accepted that adults are unreliable. Jade is standing on an ottoman, wearing what appears to be a plastic tiara and a superhero cape at the same time at least he hopes that’s Jade, otherwise the twins had a personality swap. Amber is on the couch upside down, hair hanging toward the floor like a bat. Arthur is… not visible. Shane’s blood turns cold. “Where’s Arthur?” A small giggle comes from behind the curtains. Shane lunges and yanks them aside. Arthur is crouched there like a tiny gremlin, clutching Ilya’s phone, proudly smearing his fingerprints across the screen. “Buddy,” Shane says in a voice that is too calm, “why are you in the curtains?” Arthur grins and holds up the phone as if he’s accomplished something incredible. “Mine.” “No,” Shane says. “Absolutely not” A shadow falls over Shane’s shoulder. Ilya leans in, towering, relaxed, and infuriatingly amused. “He is practicing stealth,” he says, like Arthur is training for special ops and not currently attempting to drool on his smartphone. “He’s practicing identity theft,” Shane hisses, snatching the phone away trying to give it back. Arthur’s face collapses. His lip trembles. Shane freezes. “Oh no.” Arthur’s inhale is deep, dramatic, and unmistakably pre-scream. “Ilya,” Shane says, warningly, “do something.” Ilya looks down at Arthur with the solemn seriousness of a man defusing a bomb. Then he lowers himself into a crouch and says softly, “Arthur. You are brave soldier. But now you must surrender.” Arthur sniffles. Ilya puts a hand over his own chest. “I am also sad when phone is taken. Shane is just trying to help be but is misguided. We make treaty instead.” Arthur’s eyes widen, suspicious and hopeful. Ilya opens his other hand and reveals, somehow, a small, shiny sticker. A hockey sticker. It’s a Centaur wearing skates. Arthur stops crying mid-breath like someone hit pause. Shane stares. “Where did you get that.” Ilya shrugs. “I always have stickers.” “You just…carry stickers.” “For children,” Ilya says, like Shane is the dumbest person alive. “Also for Shane when he is being difficult.” “I am not a child.” Ilya leans closer, murmurs so only Shane can hear: “Debatable.” Arthur snatches the sticker with reverence and slaps it directly onto his own forehead. Ruby doesn’t even look up from her book. “Dad says not to put stickers on your face.” Arthur beams. “Face!” Amber pops upright from the couch like a sprung trap. “Can I have one?” Jade bounces. “Me too! Me too! I want sparkly!” Shane points at Ilya. “Why would you do this.” Ilya smiles, pleased. “They asked nicely.” They have not, Shane thinks. They have asked like a mob. How does Hayden manage so many of them? But then because the universe hates him, Amber climbs right over Shane and clings to Ilya’s arm like a koala. “Ilya,” she says, earnest and bold, “Uncle Shane says ‘no’ a lot.” Shane sputters. “I do not—”

prompt: sugar crash “So there’s dinner on the stove, in case you two are hungry — yes, even your shitty birdseed, Shane — and extras for the kids but they’ve all eaten.” Hayden was grabbing stuff and shoving it away as he spoke, clearing up the lounge so that it was somewhat presentable. “Most of their toys are in the den, but they can have two each in the lounge — two — at any one time. Don’t let them tell you otherwise. Bedtime is at seven, they will try to stay up later. There will be many tricks, don’t fall for a single one of them. “Arthur’s potty just got emptied — he took a massive—” “Dump,” Shane cut in as he bounced Amber in his arms. Jackie was still near enough, he thought, to hear him. Amber couldn’t talk but she could babble. Hayden already had three dollars in that jar in the past five minutes. “—shit just before dinner,” Hayden continued, ignoring Shane’s correction. Fourth dollar in the jar.

  5. “I can’t just make some announcement, ‘hey everyone, Ilya babysat my kids, he’s a great guy!’” Hayden threw his hands up in the air. “I mean, actually you can, sweetie, but I was thinking something more gradual.” ... ... ... The one where Hayden is actually the hero of the story, because Jackie talks him into rehabilitating Ilya’s asshole image by publicly defending him, several times. The reactions to the FanMail are different this time, because of Hayden.

  9. Hayden hated the guy. Hated him. Hated his stupid, smug smirk and the myriad of insults he threw Hayden’s way and the way he made fun of Shane like it was a funny game then looked him up and down like a piece of meat and his reputation of sleeping with everything that fucking moved and the memories of being slammed into the boards by him and quite literally everything about this Russian dickhead. And he hated that he was now going to have to do everything in his power to learn how to tolerate Rozanov because Shane was inexplicably and hopelessly in love with him, and Shane was his brother in every fucking thing but blood, and Hayden was not going to keep being responsible for that sad puppy look on his face every time he realized how poorly they got along. So far, Hayden sucked at it. Big time. --- It bothers Shane that Hayden and Ilya don't get along, so Hayden is putting in the effort to try and see these redeeming qualities Shane claims the guy has. Over the years it becomes easier and easier, until one day, he realizes he doesn't have to actually try anymore. or, 5 times Hayden realized he was starting to tolerate Ilya + 1 time they acknowledged they were actually friends now

The fact that he was struggling through something, and the language barrier was only making it worse, made him even more determined in learning Russian. “I don’t want to prove myself to the people who love you. It’s—It hurts when they see you, then look me like I don’t deserve you.” Shane makes a promise to Ilya, and it changes everything.

  12. "Waitt a minute Barrett why'd ya take a drink," Young slurred with his eyes narrowed, "Harris don't play hockey." Well shit. Of course one of the rookies had to notice, those morons never let anything go. So now everyone and their fucking mothers had turned to stare at Troy who could only let out an awkward laugh. Well this sobered him up. "Harris probably wasn't the first guy he slept with you idiot, he grew up playing hockey maybe it was an old teammate," Holmber said to Young whom he was still currently draped over. "Nooo papa Hazy said professional hockey player, so it has to be someone in the league," Young argued back. The rookies had all taken to calling Wyatt variations of dad and followed him around like a bunch of baby ducks. Troy woulda laughed at the endearing nickname was he not about to get his shit rocked by a 6' 3'' Russian in the parking lot. Because of every hockey player Troy Barrett could've slept with he just had to hook up with Shane mother fucking Hollander. ----- Or the Ottawa Centaurs play never have I ever ----- UPDATE

  14. After practice, in the locker room, JJ had checked his phone with a strange look on his face. He stared at it so intensely, like he was trying to look at something very small. And then his eyes widened, and he shouted what the fuck so loud that everybody turned to look.

“Dude, what the fuck yourself,” Hayden laughed, and swiped JJ’s phone off the floor before anyone else could get it first. And he saw—well. At first, he wasn’t sure what he was looking at. And then he saw Ilya fucking Rozanov pissing all over his best friend’s chest, and, well. What the fuck was he supposed to do with that?

  15. “Jackie?” Shane’s question cuts through the silence, and Jackie winces at the frantic rasp of his voice. “Right here, honey.” She tries to keep her voice light, wrapping her hand around Hayden’s wrist and meeting his worried gaze over the phone. “What’s going on?” “I need your help.” Shane croaks out. “They called, but they won’t - I need to know if he’s okay, but they won’t tell me.” The end of his sentence disappears in something so close to a sob it makes something in Jackie’s chest freeze over.

  17. Then, with a smile in Shane’s voice, “That’s French, Ilya.” Ilya? Had Hayden heard that right? Shane definitely had to be making a joke. Or- or something. Right? And maybe Hayden would have believed that if Shane hadn’t known where Rozanov was a day before anyone else did. Russian… Lily… Ilya… ‘Oh my God’ was the only thought that crossed Hayden’s mind. His fingers gripped at the door, Shane’s head dipped close to the phone visible through the crack. It wasn’t possible. But, he just had a feeling. Something in Hayden’s brain was saying ‘no yeah, that’s Rozanov on the phone.’ Or Hayden Pike figures out Shane and Ilya's secret after overhearing a very consequential phone call. (This fic is mostly show compliant, with a couple details from the book thrown in. Some of it I changed completely for my own purposes.)

  20. He hadn’t meant to look. Honest. He really hadn’t. But Shane was in the shower, and Hayden had picked up what he’d thought was HIS phone. In his defence, the phone in question had been tossed onto the bed closest to the window, which they both knew was always his bed. Both of their phones were the same model, and neither of them had bothered to change the ringtones from the default notification. He’d picked it up without a second thought and, well, had immediately realized his mistake. But it was too late. Hayden had seen the text chain. OR Hayden starts to put the pieces together and figures things out much sooner than expected. He’d met Shane in 2008. It was the International Prospect Cup, and they’d hit it off almost instantly. Hayden had seen his raw talent and knew, even then, that he’d go far. He’d joked around with a very shy eighteen-year-old Hollander, calling him the new Crosby, who had himself once been dubbed the new Gretzky. It was a sort of passing of the generational torch, if you will. And anyone who’d ever watched Shane Hollander play hockey had to admit there was no denying he was their generation's Great One. Of course, some contested that, predicting Russia’s Ilya Rozanov as the next Great One of hockey. But Hayden knew, like the rest of the world should, that the greatest players were always Canadians. It was their sport after all; no stupid, arrogant, pain-in-the-ass Russian asshole was going to take that title. He had been ecstatic to learn they’d been drafted to the same team. Growing up in rural Ontario, Hayden had always had a soft spot for Toronto, but ultimately didn’t care where he got drafted as long as he got drafted. So, learning that a Canadian team had chosen him was an incredible moment. But learning he’d be teammates with none other than Shane Hollander had been surreal. They’d become fast friends. In the beginning, Shane had been fun, and he’d enjoyed going out with the team after games or particularly gruelling practices. Though he rarely drank, he’d still show up and have a good time. It had been on one of those nights out that Hayden had met Jackie. He’d been sipping a beer with Shane, watching Drapeau make a fool of himself on the dancefloor, when two gorgeous girls slid into their booth. A peppy little redhead had plopped herself next to Shane, while her stunning brunette friend dropped in next to Hayden. He’d bought a round for the table, then took his shot with the girl smiling up at him. Shane had been a killer wingman, politely chatting with the other girl as Hayden and Jackie drank their asses off and tore up the dance floor. An exhilarating few months later, they were Mr. and Mrs. Pike, and Hayden could hardly believe his luck. Shane had stood up with him, of course, supporting the relationship everyone else told him he’d rushed into. But Shane could see their connection; he could see how happy Hayden was and how amazing Jackie was and how perfect their life together would be. He understood and supported Hayden. “I just want you to be happy, man,” Shane had said, “if Jackie makes you happy, then fuck what anyone else says. Be happy.” And Hayden was. He had the woman of his dreams and the career of a lifetime. Nothing could touch him. They’d gone from good friends to best friends after that. Shane had been there to help put his new place back together after the housewarming party got a little out of hand. Shane had been there to celebrate the birth of all of Hayden’s kids. Shane had been there to console him when he’d traded in his sweet-ass Hummer for a Dodge Caravan. And Shane had been there countless other times. Hayden had tried to be a good friend in return. He’d repaid the favour when, after Shane bought his first place, some of the guys from the team had shown up to the housewarming with a keg. It had gotten a bit rowdy despite Shane’s best efforts, and Hayden had stuck around till morning to help him clean up the mess. Unsurprisingly, that had been the last time anyone from the team had been invited to Shane’s condo, aside from J.J. and himself. It was why he had jumped at the opportunity to be invited to Shane’s cottage the summer it was completed. He’d packed up the minivan with Jackie and their kids, then driven out to spend Canada Day long weekend at Shane’s ridiculously fancy, custom-built, lakeside cottage. Suffice to say, Hayden and Shane were best friends. Ride or die. A True bromance. Which was why he noticed when things were … off with Shane long before anyone else. It had started with a simple text message. LILY > Come over He hadn’t meant to look. LILY > Come over > will be worthwhile > 2886 Beacon > Text me. I will let you in There was a moment of silence that stretched for several minutes before another series of pings, and Hayden couldn’t help but look down at the phone he’d still been holding. LILY > You are coming, yes? > Do not make me beg > SHAAAAAAAAAANE He’d snorted at the girl’s desperation, but immediately felt bad for looking. Shane was notoriously private and probably would have been pissed if he knew Hayden had seen. Plus, at 10¢ a message, she must really like Shane. Or at the very least, really want Shane. Damn, Hayden was impressed.
