  1. “You know, one day you’re gonna meet someone you love so much you’ll want to toss all your stupid rules out the window just to be around them,” Jessica told him the day they broke up.

God, Shane remembers thinking. I fucking hope not.

Shane Hollander was perfect; the perfect son, the perfect boyfriend, the perfect friend. He had spent years refining perfection, making sure he was the picture of it. It was second nature after all these years; a suit that didn’t quite fit, but that he’d gotten used to.
    Enter Ilya Rozanov.

  3. Shane is adjusting to a lot of things in his life.

It's just a little more difficult than he'd like to comfort his new owner, in a country where he doesn't speak the language, all while trying to maintain just enough of a physical and emotional distance that he can recover from this when it all inevitably falls apart.

  5. Men do not cry. Ilya knows this, as much as he knows that being strong is only part of the battle ahead of him; being seen to be strong matters more. Ilya is twelve years old, and no longer a child. It has been four long, brittle days since his mother— since her accident.

The practice rink is busy, tonight. Under the stern tutelage of Coach Baranov, everyone here is fighting to justify their time on the ice. Hockey, Baranov tells them, often, is not a team sport. Hockey is an act of violence, and of endurance.

Ilya believes he is practiced at both.

  6. Ilya realized that he had two choices, and neither of them was very good. He could let his teammates believe he was a controlling asshole of a husband, or he could talk to them about things that Shane would probably prefer to keep to himself. He knew how private his husband was, how much time he’d spent cultivating a very particular image of himself to the world. An image of himself that only Ilya and a few other people were ever able to see behind.

  8. Ilya was looking away from the garden, away from their daughter, and at him. It was his full, unmediated attention that Shane had spent years learning to receive without deflecting, which he had never mastered and probably never would. It was a great deal of attention. It had always been. [...] "She is like you," Ilya said, into his hair. "In here." Shane felt, rather than saw, the gesture—Ilya pressing a hand briefly to his own chest. "The way you were." "I wasn't—" "Да, детка.You were." Shane huffed out a breath, and Ilya squeezed the side of his stomach with amused affection. “When I was trying to find you, you were just like this: present and also somewhere very far away, so careful with everything, and impossible to reach unless you wanted to be." A pause. "It took time. You needed time, a lot of it, and I had to trust that. And eventually, I found you.” His voice lowered, guttural. "And I will always find you." ⋆ ilya, shane, & their middle daughter—as seen by each other.

If Yuna had been a different kind of person: one with a different mother, perhaps, with different scars, then maybe she would have embraced her gift. Cultivated it, shared it.

Instead she pretended it didn’t exist. Except for the times when she couldn’t avoid it.

Mich put it down to the grass Yuna had smoked at the Halloween party the following night.

    Grass didn’t do this.

Déjà vu wasn’t quite right. She’d had that before. No, this was knowing that what she’d seen was going to happen. In the future. Sera vu, or something like that. Preemptive.

She did not call it Seeing. Not even to herself.

  10. "Why are you not scared?"

"I am scared," Ilya admits. "I just am tired. Of hiding me. Of hiding you. Of hiding how much I love you. I want to go to the rink— how do you say it? Authenti."

    "Authentically," Shane supplies, automatically.

"Yes. Authentically. I want to go to the rink authentically, as me," Ilya confirms.

Ilya looks at Shane, pauses until Shane meets his eyes. "I want to say: I, Ilya Rozanov, love a man, and that man's name is Shane Hollander."

  11. "I've been thinking," Ilya murmurs, breath hot against Shane's mouth. "We never tested how many times you can come in an hour. You said two. Now I think you could do four."

Shane's head spins as all his blood rushes south. "This seems like an awfully complicated distraction," he says.

He feels Ilya grin against his lips. "So? It's working."

  12. Ilya proffered his abilities in increments, edging closer and closer to their border with each passing day; a bundle of medicinal roots and herbs, near identical to their poisonous counterparts, to show his discernment. The next, an adult elk, heavy and muscled, its neck snapped cleanly and with minimal disturbance to the rest of the body, so that one may make use of its glossy, healthy pelt. Finally, a stack of firewood piled high, the very top of which rested his flint and steel, no small sacrifice to make in the face of one’s survival in the woods. Acceptance came in the form of the same flint and steel, returned to him at the spot which he left it, but this time wrapped around it with twine, was a slip of paper that read; welcome. * Or, lone wolf Ilya sets his sights on the pack leader’s only son, Shane. A courtship ensues.

Svetlana shifts the other bottles out of his reach, giving him an unimpressed look when he whines. “What? I’m not carrying your 200 pound ass onto the plane, so slow down there, mister.”

“It takes more to take me down,” Ilya tells her, and he isn’t wrong except that he’s also not right because he’s mostly besides himself, Svetlana would wager. At least she had been, in his place one and a half years ago. They’ve always been too similar, in certain ways.

Svetlana is a there for Ilya whenever he needs her: be it during his father’s funeral, or to call him out on his very obvious crush.

  14. “H’rder,” Shane whines into his mouth, not even trying to interrupt the kiss but speaking pathetically muffled and slurred around Ilya’s tongue. Ilya knocks their foreheads together, smiles. “Nooooo Ilya, not before the game, Ilya,” he whines, a sweetly mocking imitation of Shane, “and now look at you, mhm? Why should I ever listen to your complaining, baby, when you’re gonna be such an easy, perfect slut for it anyways?” Or: Shane plays four-dimensional chess to get Ilya to fuck him even when he tells him no, for Shane-typical control freak reasons, in Shane-typical convoluted ways, with Shane-typical unawareness of this being a sex freak thing. Ilya provides, of course.

  15. And then there is Ilya Rozanov after all of them, the cocky eighteen year old smoking in front of a no-smoking sign outside an arena in Saskatchewan. Ilya Rozanov, hockey player, born in Moscow, Russia to Irina Rozanova and Grigori Rozanov (though Shane wouldn’t really know this until much later). June 15, 1991. Shane was born before him so, technically, Rozanov has never known a life without Shane Hollander, which he will definitely lord over him whenever he’d get the chance to. His jersey number is 81. He’s a center like Shane. He’s the captain of the Boston Raiders. He’s a Gemini, though Shane has no idea how that affects him, if it has any bearing on his personality at all. Shane thinks there’s none because Rozanov is an asshole regardless, but all the tabloids insist that there is. He’s six foot three; only an inch taller than Shane. He’s a boy. There’s this thing that he does where he rubs his nose whenever he’s lying. It’s a pretty easy tell, and Rozanov is not a very good liar. He’s a boy, a boy, a boy.

Sometimes, he wishes Rozanov was a girl instead.

But it’s true. David Hollander is normal about hockey. He has a life outside it. He goes to work at the Treasury. He goes on long walks. He volunteers at animal shelters. He puzzles. Well—he works on puzzles? Ilya still is not sure how the verbs work there.

The point is: David Hollander built a life outside of hockey that was fulfilling—that remains fulfilling. This, in its roundabout way, and though Ilya could never admit it, saves Ilya’s life.

  19. Ilya knows what he is. He has always known what he is. The word for it in Russian tastes like something you'd scrape off a boot. The word in English is bisexual, which is a nicer word, which he has heard, which he does not use. He uses other words. He uses the word his brother taught him. He uses it on himself before anyone else can. He grows up. He gets good at hockey. He moves to America. He... falls in love. 20. "Typical dirty Americans," Rozanov said. He took the pitcher and started pouring water into the four glasses. "You wear your shoes indoors and then you want to fuck someone else's husband and then you expect him to sleep in the same filthy sheets."

Scott opened his mouth to retort back, but Rozanov, the gracious host, was handing him a cold glass of water. "Well, we will all get very dirty together tonight," he continued. "Shane, my sweetheart, you are outnumbered. Better hydrate."

Hollander drank obediently. Needing something to do with his hands, Scott sipped his water, too. Kip traced circles lightly along his back. The silence that felt so pleasant outside by the fire now settled heavily over them. Scott cleared his throat. "So," he said. "What are we doing?"

Rozanov looked at him like he was stupid. "Is it not obvious? We are going to run a train on my husband."
