Montreal's new starting centre fires shots at Yuna online. The centaurs respond. @DomMav_Montreal: Crazy how some people talk like they’re part of the game when they’re just watching from the stands. Maybe focus less on tweeting and more on cheering your boy through another invisible night. @DomMav_Montreal: Ottawa media hype is hilarious. One decent winger and suddenly his whole family thinks they’re untouchable. @DomMav_Montreal: Shane Hollander plays like he’s scared to disappoint mommy. Hockey’s a man’s game, not daycare. #mamasboy @DomMav_Montreal: Tell your son to keep his head up tonight, Yuna. This league eats soft players alive. @DomMav_Montreal: Some guys bring skill. Some bring grit. Some bring their mom to fight their battles online. Guess which one Shane is. #mamasboy @DomMav_Montreal: Hope Ottawa enjoys defending feelings instead of the neutral zone tonight. Northern Ice Sports – Live Broadcast Ottawa Centaurs vs. Montreal Voyageurs Play-by-Play: Jack Mercer Color: Paul Levesque Mercer: Five minutes left, tied at two, and nobody on either bench is pretending this is just hockey anymore. Levesque: Jack, this stopped being about points in the standings the moment Maver opened his mouth about Hollander’s family. Every shift since has been payback. Mercer: Hollander carries through the neutral zone—hooked by Comaeu, no call—he keeps his feet, dumps it deep, and Maver drives him face-first into the boards after the puck’s gone! Levesque: That’s predatory. That’s intent. Mercer: Rosanov is on Maver in a heartbeat—shoves him down—refs screaming for space, but nobody’s listening! Levesque: Rosanov’s not even arguing. He’s staring. He’s remembering. Mercer: Play resumes—Young wins the draw—shot from the point—rebound—ROSANOV SCORES! Levesque: That’s a pressure release. That’s rage finding the net. Mercer: Montreal pulls Stedlund—six attackers—Maver over the line—he fires—Hayes blocks it—covers— WHISTLE —and Maver slashes Hayes after the save!

There's no good way to be stuck in an elevator. Not when you're stuck in an elevator with someone who treats being annoying as an art form he wants to perfect, and definitely not when that person is your son's rival who you've hated for years.
But, when Yuna finds herself stuck in an elevator with Ilya Rozanov, she realises there's more to the story than she'd seen.

Ilya sat straight up after falling, and he looked to his immediate left, seeing the motionless body sprawled out on the ice. It didn’t register to him right away, though it should have. Then, he noticed the blood, a small pool starting to form under Shane’s head. No. no no no nonononono. He glanced down at his skates, noticing a small trace of blood on the tip of his right blade. He felt like he was going to puke.

“What are these?” Yuna hears Ilya ask. He’s standing with his back to her in front of the armoire next to the couch, looking up at the shelves. She’d been on her way back into the living room with after-dinner coffee when she’d paused at the threshold. Shane steps toward the armoire, coming up behind Ilya and curling both arms around his waist. “Um, trophies from when I was a kid. Like, minor hockey leagues and tournaments and stuff.” Ilya moves his head from left to right slowly, scanning the array of trophies and medals on the shelf. “Is big business? Making meaningless awards for tiny hockey players?” “They aren’t meaningless,” Shane protests, but he sounds a little sheepish. “Yes, I’m sure the…” Ilya leans in close to read the plaque on one trophy, “‘Sportsmanship Award’ for the U7 Snowflake Classic was very prestigious.” Shane rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing. “They don’t have awards like this in Russia?” Or: Yuna bonds with Ilya, one plastic trophy at a time.

5 times Yuna Hollander thought Ilya Rosanov’s mom should be with him, and one time she and Ilya agreed Winter 2008 Yuna had been listening to Shane talk about this Ilya Rosanov kid for weeks. Every day after hockey practice, he had film review to prep for the World Juniors, and every night at the dinner table, he'd tell his parents about another play he saw by this Russian phenom, his eyes bright. He'd been quieter about hockey after he was named to Canada’s junior international team - Yuna worried maybe it was too much. He's just a kid, sports should still be fun, they shouldn't be this intense yet. But seeing how animated he was explaining to David how he'd replicated a backhand shot of Rosanov's that he'd overheard a scout raving about, Yuna felt confident this was the path her son wanted for himself. She'd support him no matter what. The week ahead of their flight from Ottawa to Regina for the tournament had been a flurry of logistics. She had to make sure Shane packed all of his favorite equipment and clothes and backups of each, even though Team Canada was also providing uniforms and gear when they arrived. Shane was a ball of nervous energy on the plane, but now that they approach the arena, Yuna sees him almost bursting with excitement. His cheeks were flush in the cold, the sun highlighted his freckles, and his smile beamed toward her. He'd been taller than Yuna for a couple years now and was still growing. People treated him like an adult, expected him to make decisions about his future, but to her, he was still her little boy. Yuna stops at the door to the arena as Shane notices someone down the alleyway. "Mom, I think that's Ilya Rosanov - I'm just going to go over and say hi, I'll be right back." She follows her son's line of sight toward the kid in the distance smoking and sighs. She’d heard the Russian delegation sends over all these boys with coaches, but no parents. They'd be better behaved if their mothers were here, she's sure. But she knows Shane is excited to meet the only boy people say might actually be faster than he is. They are going to be in the same draft class, might even play in the NHL together one day if this all continues. Coaches and scouts are already been trying to pit them against one another. But they're both just kids, and it’d be nicer for Shane to have a friend. "Okay, honey, I'll just be inside with the other parents." When Shane finds her again in the bleachers of the arena, he's making the face Yuna knows means he was in his head about something. "How'd it go?" "Oh, uh, fine. He said he was going to beat us." That's all he says, but he looks flatter than he did outside. Deflated, maybe. For Shane’s whole mood to shift, Yuna thinks that kid really must've been an asshole. Well, so much for the plan where they're friends instead of rivals. Summer 2009 Yuna has to be honest: she’s glad her son was the second overall draft pick. First would’ve been exciting, and obviously historic, but she’s overjoyed that Shane went to a Canadian team instead of Boston. She just wishes first hadn’t been Rosanov. He was so cocky, holding up the stupid #1 in photos. As they speak with Shane’s new coach at the after party, she knows she's being too effusive about her love of the Metros, but she's just so relieved it all worked out. She'd been on edge for months with all the anticipation for the draft. Even yesterday, she was up all night trying not to wake David, worried it wasn’t the right choice, letting Shane pursue hockey without going to college first. He could’ve had more time to grow before joining the league, while getting a degree as a backup plan. But all of the experts they’d talked to said with his skill level, this would be the best route, with the most impact on the game and the most benefit for Shane. Shane is so talented, and he loves hockey, and she just wants him to be happy. Yuna excuses herself from the conversation to go to the bathroom. Crossing across the ballroom, she sees Rosanov standing with an intense man in a uniform who must be his father and the Boston Raiders' coach. His mom must’ve not wanted to make the trip from Russia, Yuna thinks to herself. She knows it’s far, but she can’t imagine not being next to Shane for this moment. When she's crossing back toward her family, she notices the Rosanovs again. Ilya looks quieter than he did earlier at the post-draft photo opportunity. And younger, standing next to his father. She watches as a scowl come across his face in response to something his father says, and then sees him glance over to where Shane and David are standing. They must be talking about beating Montreal this season. She hopes Shane beats him for rookie of the year. That’ll show them. Summer 2014 “David, how are you so chill about this? Rosanov looked right at Shane when he held up that MVP trophy. I swear, he smirked. The constant interview chirps are one thing, but openly taunting him in a room filled with basically every player and coach in the league?” Yuna paces across their bedroom, vaguely getting ready for bed but too wired hating Ilya Rosanov to commit to it.

The sound of joy has begun to settle down into a tense silence, some muttering and asking about what was going on. “Be careful with his head,” Hayes is saying, voice thick with something. It is disturbing to see him so serious. Bood nods, and starts moving a lump out of the seat. Ilya raises an eyebrow, confused. “Who is passed out in my seat?” That is when Ilya finally sees what Bood and Hayes are crowding over. It is himself, his own body, passed out and slumped against the seat in the row in front of him. There is a worrying amount of blood coming out of his nose and a cut by the back of his head. Head wounds are terribly dramatic, but Ilya feels worried about this one. Mainly because he’s floating around like a ghost. ilya gets hit on the head during the emergency landing in Tampa and thus begins his week- long stint as a ghost. whatever bad thing that can happen, the proceeds to do so. it's definitely not fun for ilya, and definitely not fun for shane either.

This has to be a nightmare. Ilya is convinced it must be. Because there is no way that what he’s watching happen is real life. The SUV ahead of him, the one that is carrying Shane, is swerving out of control, having hit a patch of black ice. The driver in Ilya’s vehicle has already hit the brakes, their SUV skidding to a stop. But the one in front of them is still going. And then Ilya can’t do anything but watch as it suddenly flips. Once, twice, a third time before it drags across the road, still upside down. Finally, it comes to a stop. The Centaurs end up in a car accident on a snowy drive.

Somehow, Yuna ends up washing dishes side-by-side with Ilya Rozanov. Shane had resisted her help—telling her to sit back down—it was his cottage, he'd wash the dishes, but Yuna needed her hands to be busy. Needed to be alone, really. But that last piece didn't work out. Rozanov—Ilya. He asked them to call him Ilya— slipped into the kitchen easily, and took up the task of drying and putting the dishes away without a word. ——— Yuna talks to Ilya after their dinner at the cottage. Set after episode 6.

“And then this is Shane on his first day of school,” Yuna said, whipping out another photo with a flourish. “He was so nervous, do you remember, honey? We had to hold your hand all the way up to the classroom door.” Ilya gazed at the photo, not bothering to conceal his obvious delight. It struck Shane suddenly that he’d never seen any photos of Ilya as a child. Had never seen what he had worn on his first day of school, never seen the gap-toothed primary school days. He wondered if his hair had used to be lighter. If his mother had held his hand tight on his first day at school as well.

"Sorry. Just realized something just now.," Ilya laughs. "What?" "Loons," Ilya says and laughs again. "Loons?" Yuna repeats confused. "When I went to the cottage last summer Shane made fun of me because I never heard the loon call before. I was so scared. I called it stupid canadian wolf bird," Yuna lets out a little laugh, Ilya continues - "I just realized that these ducks on my baby blanket, they look like..." "Loons," Yuna finishes with smile tugging on her lips. "Yes. Loons. Shane will make fun of me," Ilya groans but not maliciously. He takes the blanket out of Yuna's hands and brings it to his face, trying to see if it still smells like home, like his mom. But the smell was gone and his heart lurches. (...) "Tell me the stories. All of them." *** Or: Ilya has the flu when he recieves a package from Svetlana containing his childhood memorabilia from Russia. Mother son duo Ilya Rozanov and Yuna Hollander strikes again ❤

An Interview with the Hollanders by aurora_chiroptera
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid
2026-01-05
It's time to refresh the fluff pieces about NHL players to fill out sports programming. A new spin has added in interviews with the player's family. Ilya doesn’t have many options, but decides maybe Shane wouldn't mind sharing. Set a couple years into Ilya playing for Ottawa. “We want to make a new video for you, now that you’ve moved to the Centaurs,” the sports media producer was addressing Ilya, but was looking at his agent. “Something a little more grown up, though still keeping your brand.” Ilya was sick of his brand. He wished desperately that he could bring Yuna to these meetings; he'd begun to trust her opinions at least as much as his agent's. But he wouldn’t know how to explain her presence, so he muddled through. “-capture the work you do with your charity, as well as your new house, your fewer cars...” the producer’s eyes flicked to him briefly, as if some part of him didn’t believe those were Ilya's choices. They certainly weren’t “on brand.” “I think it’s a great idea,” his agent said, her professional smile in place as always. “We don’t want anyone to forget about Ilya Rozanov.” Ilya gave a short laugh, crossing his arms. “I am not going to let them.” “Wonderful! Now there is one part I wanted to run by you right away, because it might take some doing to line up.” The producer passed a few papers over. Ilya barely glanced at them. “We’ve been doing some snippets with player’s families in our recent profiles. And I was hoping we could do the same for you?” Now the man was staring intently at Ilya. Under those eyes, Ilya locked down anything his face wanted to do. Better to keep it blank, as his heart ached. What family could he offer? His mother was dead. He was doing a great job at never speaking to his brother again. He couldn’t share Shane, the only person who felt like home. Svetlana wouldn’t want the attention, given the assumptions that would be made and her experiences with her father’s fame. He had to look away from the producer, blinking at the big windows that looked out onto more tall buildings. He wished for Yuna again, the way that Shane described how she could see through bullshit and get what was best. To stand up to these people who just wanted to make money off him so that at least he got the same back in return. An idea started to form: Yuna, and David too with his quiet supportive presence. Ilya started to smile, turning back to the fancy business man. He straightened, leaning his elbows against the table. “I don’t believe it will be as hard as you think. Can get two things done at once, in fact.” The puzzled look that grew into surprise was something Ilya enjoyed greatly. He loved to be able to surprise and shock - even in a business meeting. . “You told them to interview my parents for your family segment?” Shane’s face scrunched in confusion in the light from his phone screen, but showed none of the panic Ilya had been afraid of. “Yes, and it’s fine because I would know them. Yuna runs the foundation named after my mother. Is sweet story,” Ilya said, needing Shane to know he’d thought this through, he wasn’t going to endanger the plan. “I got to know her, she took me under her wing, invited me home for dinner so I met David. I am like second son.” Ilya grinned his wickedest smile. “Favorite son even.” “Stop trying to steal my parents,” Shane scolded, but his face was split with its own smile. “Very rude behavior, you need to do better if you want to be Canadian.” “Yes, yes.” Ilya gazed at his phone screen and then sighed dramatically. “I wish you were here.” “Same. Very rude of you being told to come to Montreal while I’m away,” Shane said, shifting against hotel room pillows. “Ah, rude, rude, I am being so rude,” Ilya rolled his eyes. He leaned against the headboard in Shane’s bedroom, wearing one of Shane’s sweatshirts. He’d probably sleep with Shane’s pillow tonight once the call was over. “You cannot train me not to be asshole, so you must still like it.” “Mhm,” was Shane’s response to that. It was really unfair that the light from the screen seemed to highlight his freckles. Ily slid down in the bed, getting more comfortable. “You have room to yourself, yes?” Shane shifted as well, propping himself up now. “I sure do. Do you have some suggestions of what I should do with that privacy?” “A couple. Let us start with you taking shirt off.” --- The camera crew had set up in the living room, as Yuna had directed them. With David in the kitchen making coffee and tea for everyone, Yuna approached the producer. “You want to do just the piece about Ilya today?” The man, Jake, nodded. “We want a different background between this and the one for Shane. Somewhere in Montreal is what we’re currently thinking.” “That makes sense,” Yuna said, and it sort of did. The man had a vision and he wasn’t going to let this hiccup stop that. She wondered if he would have really traveled to Russia if that’s what it took to get Ilya’s story. “What format are we working with?” Jake gave a half smile she didn't believe. “That’s right, you’re probably old hat at things like this.” “When your son is as talented as mine, you get used to it.” Yuna knew her pride for Shane came through without her trying.
