“You are Scott Hunter’s boy, yes?” Hockey Guy asked, and fuck, he was Russian. Not that Kip had anything against Russians, of course, but the chances were that any given Russian in the NHL was not going to be all that friendly to gay people. The only Russian NHL player Kip was at all familiar with was that Rozanov guy from Boston, and based on the “fighter, womanizer, party boy” stories he’d heard about the guy, he was really hoping that he was not the man standing next to him.
“Yeah. That’s me.” Kip confirmed, standing straighter and flashing a tight smile.
Hockey Guy grinned and offered his hand. “Ilya Rozanov. Nice to meet you.”
God fucking damn it.
Or: During the MLH award ceremony, Kip finds himself having a very interesting conversation with Ilya Rozanov.

“Yeah, what the hell?” Comeau echoes. “Since when do you go around defending Rozanov?”
“I – I’m not,” Hayden says, starting to carefully fold his clothes so he doesn’t have to look anyone in the eye. Maybe Shane is onto something, always folding his things instead of throwing them into his bag. Gives you a moment to concentrate on something manual, to think before having to respond to questions and comments.
“You literally were defending him right now,” J. J. points out.---
Four times Hayden defends Ilya Rozanov to other people, and one time he defends Ilya from himself.

“Um. Hi,” Shane starts, looking down at the boy. The boy just looks up at him, a puzzled expression on his face. “кто ты?” The boy says in some funny language Shane has never heard of. “Um.. I only speak English.” The boy's eyebrows furrow, but he doesn’t seem all too deterred by the language barrier. Instead, he hands Shane a piece of pink chalk. He points to the drawing he’s been working on, saying something in that funny language again Or: Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov meet when they are six. "Rozanov went to see Shane in the hospital..." One sunny afternoon, after an awkward encounter in the gift shop of Montreal General Hospital, Yuna Hollander decides she hates Ilya Rozanov just a bit less. Translation into Русский available: Семейные узы by chouchoute, silksosoft, WTF Heated rivalry 2026 (fandomHeatedRivalry) David goes to the hospital immediately, of course, but visiting hours are over before Shane gets moved into the observation unit, and eventually he has to leave to get a couple of hours' sleep before heading into work. Yuna wanted to be there; she should have been. She hardly ever misses one of Shane's home games, but there was a major Rolex product launch event in Toronto and she thought it would be good for someone from Shane's camp to make an appearance. Which means she's not there the one time something happens— the one time Shane really needs her. When Yuna finally lands in Montreal, head aching and jaw set, she's running on coffee and fumes, her phone battery at seventeen percent. Of course they've lost her hurried rental car reservation and the only thing left is a huge, unwieldy Lincoln town car. She usually spends a minute walking around any rental with her phone, documenting pre-existing scratches or dings, but she has the feeling she's probably going to scrape this thing along a bollard in the hospital parking garage anyway and quite honestly, at this point, she doesn't give a damn. When she arrives at the hospital, she ducks into a restroom for a moment to practice an encouraging smile in the mirror. It looks unconvincing and terrible. She can't even blame the fluorescent lights. She splashes her face with icy cold water, then folds up a cold wet paper towel and holds it against her eyes for twenty seconds, counting methodically. It helps, a little. The volunteer at the front desk gets flustered when asked for Shane's room number. Luckily for her, not too flustered to request the patient privacy password that Coach Theriault established before she acknowledges that Shane has been admitted and giving Yuna directions to his room. On the way to the elevators, Yuna passes the hospital gift shop, its doors flanked by a display of bouquets and a huge stuffed giraffe with balloons tied around its neck. She pauses. There are things Shane likes when he's in the hospital. Lip balm. Sugarless mints. A nice, solid coffee mug to drink from instead of those fiddly plastic cups. Maybe some gentle cleansing wipes for his face. He hates being gross and sweaty. She steps inside, eyes scanning over the tchotchkes, get-well cards and magazines, candy and gum, and blinks. Is that...? It is. The terror and the bad boy of the league, Ilya Rozanov, in a black suede jacket and fashionably straight-legged jeans. He looks thoughtful and tired, heavy-lidded eyes almost shut as he uses one finger to idly rotate a spinner rack overflowing with small stuffed animals. She doesn't say anything, but he seems to sense her gaze and looks up, startled. "Oh. Mrs. Hollander." "Rozanov," she says coolly. "Uh." He looks her up and down. "You just get in?" She nods, and he pulls his hand away from the spinner rack, oddly tense. "I was just up to see him. He, uh... he seems in good spirits. You know. He's okay." He is not okay. A concussion and a cracked collarbone is not okay. It's weeks of painful recovery and physical therapy, weeks of trying to keep Shane from pushing himself too hard without smothering him— and, as they both know very well, he's out of the playoffs. Yuna takes a deep breath. She knows that none of that is what Rozanov meant, and anyway snapping at him won't do anything to make Shane feel better. Then, of course, because it's Ilya fucking Rozanov, he has to keep pushing. "I should have brought him a Raiders bear, maybe," he says, gesturing at the stuffed toys with a little smirk. "They don't have one, so." "Oh. You think that's funny?" Yuna says, seeing red. "You think this is funny?" "No!" Rozanov says immediately. "No, Mrs. Hollander. I don't think that. I don't." Yuna presses her lips together. She is upset and worried and furious, but not at Rozanov, not really. "Sorry." "No," he says, just as quickly. "I understand. You're good mother. You worry. It's fine." Oh, god, both Rozanov's parents have passed, haven't they? He lost his father a few weeks ago. Maybe that's another reason he looks so hollow and worn out around the eyes. "Really, I... didn't mean to fly off the handle." "No, no," Rozanov mutters, looking down, as if he were more comfortable when she was snapping at him, and less comfortable with a conversation between two adults just talking to each other like humans. There are so many feral hockey boys like Rozanov— on their own in foreign countries since they were teenagers, treating the world like one big locker room, where the biggest dick-swinger always wins. The silence stretches on. She doesn't think she's ever seen Rozanov this quiet for this long, at least not since he made captain and his English started improving enough to give good snappy soundbites. "Well," she says. "It was good of you to stop by." And it was. He didn't have to. No one would have made him. "Well," Rozanov says, "I'm the captain. So." He glances back at the stuffed animals. "I don't mean to make fun. He's just very high right now, you know. You'll see. Everything is funny." He reaches for a little golf-ball sized round bird, practically spherical with a little felt beak and wings. "Maybe this one, eh? To chirp at him." Okay, maybe it's the sleep deprivation, but Yuna has to admit: it's sort of funny. She stifles a half-laugh. His mouth twitches, and she nods and turns away awkwardly to her own shopping... and then somehow, by the time she's done collecting everything Shane needs, Rozanov has actually spent fourteen Canadian dollars on a stupid stuffed bird. He reaches out and drops it gently into her shopping bag without asking. He's still smiling faintly in that half-mocking way that is always so infuriating in interviews. "Thanks," Yuna says flatly, and turns to make her way to the elevator bank. Well, what is she going to do, dig it out and throw it on the ground just because Ilya Rozanov bought it?

“That man has a boyfriend,” Rose says, certain. “He does,” Rae agrees easily, their voice equally certain. “He’s never gonna tell me who it is,” Rose says. “Definitely not,” they agree. “I’m gonna figure it out,” Rose says. Rae doesn’t comment on that, just dips their sponge back into the blue paint. Silently begins to layer it over the back of Rose’s hand, carefully dabbing to make sure that it fills the creases of her knuckles, the dips between each finger. It’s impressive, really, how much doubt Rae manages to communicate though the gentle press of a sponge. Whatever. Rose figured out Shane’s sexuality before he did. It shouldn’t be that much more difficult for her to figure out who his boyfriend was. She does have excellent gaydar after all. Though she really wishes it would more frequently kick in before she started sleeping with yet another gay man. Or, Shane Hollander has a boyfriend. Rose is going to find out who it is, one way or another.

The Phone Call by Rain_And_Books (Huni_obri)
Heated Rivalry (TV), Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid

“I’m fine,” Hayden snapped, voice cracking just a little. “You’re on drugs. You’re confused. Let’s maybe not talk about your... your marital activities.” He looked away from the man, finding the floor much more intriguing. “But it’s true! And you’ve heard them before.” The Russian explained, and Hayden paused. “No. I didn’t. I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” Ilya smiled. And Hayden groaned; it was one of those cocky smiles that he had whenever he was about to be an asshole. Which was always. Or Ilya gets sent to the hospital after he collapses. Now, all drugged up, he starts explaining to Hayden what happened during the phone call when he and Shane were at the cottage. Hayden sat on the chair watching Rozanov, contemplating every life decision he had ever made. Why did he agree to come with Shane to the hospital again? Oh, right, cause he’s a supportive friend and loves Shane. Rozanov’s chest rose and fell with his breaths. The man was still unconscious, the drugs they gave him knocking him out. Shane had to run home to get a couple of things and left Hayden all by himself. He had asked him to watch over Ilya in case he woke up, because he didn’t want his husband to be left alone. And now Hayden had to suffer through watching Rozanov. Though as long as he remained asleep, Hayden would be fine with it. Of course, Rozanov did not care for his comfort. Hayden had just started to relax, or as much as he could relax in a plastic chair that seemed designed to punish the human spine, when the steady rhythm of Rozanov’s breathing stammered. Hayden straightened instantly. “No,” he muttered under his breath. “Absolutely not.” Rozanov’s brow furrowed, the crease between his eyebrows deepening. His fingers twitched against the sheets. Once. Twice. Hayden leaned forward despite himself, eyes fixed on the bed. He told himself this was his responsibility. That Shane had trusted him with this. That if Rozanov woke up and tried to rip out his IV or start a fight with the heart monitor, it would technically be Hayden’s fault. His eyelids fluttered. Hayden groaned softly and scrubbed a hand down his face. “You have got to be kidding me.” Rozanov’s eyes opened, slow, unfocused, glassy with medication. For a long moment, he just stared at the ceiling, breathing shallow and uneven, like the air itself was an inconvenience. Then his gaze shifted. And landed on Hayden. Rozanov squinted, clearly trying to piece together reality. He then slowly moved his head away from Hayden and around the room. “Where is… Shane?” “Gone,” Hayden said. Then, because he wasn’t a monster - because he saw the hurt appear on Rozanov’s face and he didn’t want to see that expression on anyone’s face, even if he was Rozanov, he added. “Home. He’ll be back.” Rozanov’s face relaxed slightly, even though his body remained stiff. His fingers curled in the sheets again, knuckles whitening. “You stayed.” “He left me here,” Hayden corrected. “Against my will.” That earned him a faint huff of breath that might have been a laugh if it hadn’t sounded so painful. Rozanov closed his eyes for a second, regaining his composure. As much as he could in his highly medicated state. “You look,” Rozanov murmured, “miserable.” “Thank you,” Hayden said. “I’ve been working on that.” Another silence stretched between them. The machines filled it, beeping steadily, unbothered by the tension coiling in the room. Hayden shifted in his chair, suddenly aware of how close the bed was, how fragile Rozanov looked despite everything he knew about the man. Rozanov swallowed. “I don’t remember… coming here,” he admitted. “You collapsed on the ice,” Hayden said before he could stop himself. “Scared the hell out of Shane.” Rozanov’s eyes flicked back to him, something raw and unsettled flashing across his face before he masked it. He stared at the ceiling again, jaw clenched, like he could will himself back into unconsciousness. He remembered the sudden collapse of Rozanov. Montreal and Ottawa were playing against each other, and as soon as Ilya’s body collided with the ice, Shane became an absolute mess. Thankfully, Rozanov fainted towards the end of the third period; otherwise, Hayden was sure, the paramedics would have had to deal with two hockey players in need of medical assistance with Shane’s impending panic attack. Hayden exhaled slowly. Great. Wide awake. Alone together. This was going to be a long wait. “I want Shane,” Rozanov complained. Hayden sighed. “He’ll be here soon. He just needed to go grab some of your things.” Hayden explained again. He knew Rozanov was medicated, but he really didn’t want to keep repeating himself for the entirety of Shane’s absence. “But why couldn’t he go later?” Ilya whined. Hayden resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Somehow, this particular brand of Rozanov chaos was… almost amusing. He had half a mind to take out his phone and record him, just to spite him afterwards. “Because we didn’t expect you’d wake up already. He thought he’d come back to you still asleep.” Ilya frowned, as if Hayden had just told him the world’s greatest injustice. “But Shane is supposed to be here when I wake up.” “I know,” Hayden said, through gritted teeth. “He will be. Soon.” Ilya stared at the ceiling for a moment, then turned his head again, eyes unfocused. “He usually is.” Hayden paused, unsure where this was going. And kinda scared. Rozanov on a normal day was an ass, Rozanov high on drugs… “Usually is what?” “Here, when I wake up,” Ilya clarified. “Or when I fall asleep. Or in between.” He hummed thoughtfully. “Especially in between.” A lopsided smile appeared on his face, his eyes closing as if he had lost himself in a memory. Hayden felt something cold settle in his spine. He had a bad feeling about where this was going. “Okay,” he said quickly. “We don’t need to-“ “Because we have sex,” Ilya said, plainly. Hayden choked on absolutely nothing. “Yep. There it is.” He said, mortified, and then muttered. “I’m gonna kill Shane.” Ilya blinked at him,
