  1. Then it’s Friday night and Kip is on his way to his first ever client. He told his dad he has a new job pet-sitting to explain the weird hours and overnight absences that are about to occur, and felt more than a little guilty when George patted his shoulder and told Kip how proud he was of him for working so hard.

Well, he wouldn’t be proud of this, Kip thinks as he walks through the lobby of a fancy East Side apartment building. About to give the guy in the penthouse the boyfriend experience he booked. All 16 hours of it.

    -
Kip finds a more lucrative side gig than smoothie barista. And then he finds Scott.

Eighteen year-old Kyle Swift has been banished from Vermont and sent to navigate a life in New York City on his own, with a wallet chain, a thin thread of financial support, and occasional phone calls where an entire family had once been. Haunted by the shadows of every mistake he’s ever made leading up to the one that blew apart his entire life, Kyle is desperate for the fresh start his mother keeps claiming this is, and he’s desperately hoping to stop making the same stupid mistakes.

  4. “I had such a good time tonight,” Kip whispers, and traces his thumb over the curve of Scott’s smile.

“Even with the unexpected werewolf encounter?”

Kip knows he’s not entirely joking. Scott is always half-convinced they’ll get to a point where his life is simply too complicated and it will scare Kip off, but honestly, what’s a little surprise werewolf compared to what they’ve already made it through?

  5. Three years isn't that long, really. It's long enough to get a Master's Degree in Art History. Long enough to build the foundations of a relationship that could last the rest of their lives. Long enough for a professional hockey player to figure out how to tell the world he's gay.

  6. "These road trips are just killing me. I mean, it's brutal. I think I'm cursed," Scott sighs, throwing the last couple of shirts into his bag. No smoothie, no win, has been the trend lately. And it's not like he can just whisk Kip away and take him on the road with the team to ensure his good luck.

"Don't even joke about that." Kip looks thoughtful where he's leaning against the doorway to Scott's bedroom. And so, so beautiful. Scott can barely make himself stop looking at Kip some days. Staring. Marvelling. "Maria got cursed once, it was terrible."

“Oh,” Kip breathes quietly as he realizes what must have happened. “Oh, sweetheart.”

  10. "You sure about this?” Pike asked as Ilya made it to the door.

The scent was so strong here it felt like Ilya was walking through a cloud of aerosolized candy. It felt sticky on his skin, in his hair. Ilya could feel the warm flush on the tops of his ears, across his cheeks. He blinked a few times, letting the beta’s words sink in. “Yes, fine,” he growled back.

Thankfully, it didn’t seem like Pike was affected at all, thanks to his scent-blind beta nose. “So… there’s no easy way to say this,” the man said nervously. “The guys totally fucked up.” He handed over a plain black wallet.

Ilya opened it, found the Boston College ID card and pulled it out. A handsome Asian boy looked back at him. He had short black hair, warm golden skin, and dark eyes. There was a shadow stretched across his cheeks, something Ilya couldn’t quite make out in the tiny picture. Shane Hollander, the card read. Sophmore.

“How the hell do they make this mistake?” Ilya half-shouted. He snarled again, fought against it, got his face under control. “Fuck.”

    “Yeah,” Pike agreed. “Fuck.”

  12. This work explores the previously unseen three and a half years in the lives and the relationship of characters Scott Hunter and Kip Grady from Season 1 of the Heated Rivalry television series created by Jacob Tierney. It begins where Episode 3 ("Hunter") ends and ends with the final scene of Episode 5 ("I'll Believe in Anything"). It follows Kip's growth from smoothie barista to graduate student and beyond. It accompanies Scott on his journey as a lonely and conflicted professional hockey star who became the Game Changer he was destined to be. And it chronicles the path to sunshine for their relationship.

Season 1 of the 2025 Heated Rivalry television series is treated as canon, and this work assumes the reader is very familiar with the show and especially the Scott and Kip characters within it. A few elements are inspired by events in the book Game Changer by Rachel Reid or other books in the series, but only to the extent that it does not conflict with TV canon. There are several original characters and new roles for familiar ones.

  13. He answered the phone, pressing it tight against his ear even as he maneuvered his way through the locker room and toward the hallway. “Hey. Is everything all right?”

There was a moment of silence, shaky and stiff that worried Scott more than the five separate calls did. Scott’s frown deepened, pulse beginning to hammer beneath his skin. He threw caution to the wind, unable to think clearly over the nausea beginning to roil in his gut. “Kip? What’s wrong?”

“Is this Scott?” An unfamiliar voice filtered through the speaker and into Scott’s ear, doing nothing to calm the anxiety slowly ratcheting up higher and higher within him.

Scott paused for a moment in the doorway, not caring if his teammates noticed him. “Who is this? What’s going on?”

“This is Kip’s dad.” Scott braced himself against the doorframe, stomach clawing its way up his throat.

  14. Maria is shaken by another wave of laughter. “He got back together with his hockey man during playoffs. You beautiful idiot.”

    “And what does that mean?”

Kip sighs. “They have this, like, superstition, I guess. That you’re not allowed to have sex during playoffs or you’ll lose your games. Or whatever.”

Shawn laughs, sounding a little bit evil. “How long do playoffs last?”

    “Don’t ask,” Kip replies darkly.

  15. “I want you to stay here tonight.”

Scott squeezes, and Kip thinks he can feel the bones in his wrist press together. Is he strong enough to break them? Would he try?

Of course not, Kip thinks. That’s crazy. It’s just a game. But he really wants it to bruise, at least.

Scott took his sunglasses from the side pocket of his backpack and put them on. His phone vibrated. He pulled it out and there it was: a picture of Kip and Elena from across the street. Kip smiling, Elena pouting. Below it, the caption: "Please don't die crossing this sea of people."

Scott laughed to himself, put the phone away, and pushed the door open.

The screams of excitement crashed over Scott like a wave. Fans crowded the sides of the path, many with tears in their eyes, others with their arms reaching over the metal barricades, everyone wanting a piece of that night. Happy shouts celebrating the victory, hoarse voices declaring their love for the team, words of pride and admiration. Scott smiled slightly, giving a general wave as he walked, sharing looks of gratitude to both sides – until the smile froze on his face.

"THEY TURNED HOCKEY GAY?! SERIOUSLY?! FUCK YOU, HUNTER!"

The voice cut through the air like a blade. Scott swallowed hard, his eyes finding a compact group on the other side of the metal barricades. Not happy at all. Men, mostly, their expressions twisted with hate, being held back by the police officers doing security.

    "HOPE YOU DIE, YOU FAGGOT!"

  17. Sometimes, Scott feels Kip’s absence like a ghost.

It’s a brush of fingertips down his spine, a soft exhale of breath that sends goosebumps across the back of his neck.

But when he turns, Kip is never there.

  18. “What are you doing in Brooklyn anyway?”

“We’re building a fence for the backyard,” Scott says, probably sounding a little too excited about manual labor on a Sunday morning and Kip laughs again.

    “Ah, I see. A project.”

Charlotte snuffles and tucks her head under Scott’s chin, trying to find a comfortable position to go back to sleep.
