Game Changers Series - Rachel Reid, Heated Rivalry (TV)
2026-02-16
Shane loses his game to a blizzard and his boyfriend to a bad hit, all in the same night.
Snowed in with his parents in Montreal, he watches Ilya get stretchered off on live TV, and discovers that when your relationship is a secret, no one at the hospital thinks to call you.
In Ottawa, Ilya wakes up with broken bones, a serious concussion, and a neatly edited brain. The months where he was lonely and depressed and fighting with Shane? Gone. He’s mentally living in the soft, hopeful beginning of things—and the more everyone tiptoes around him, the more wrong it feels.
The Centaurs step up. The Hollanders dig in. Shane tries to convince himself that “temporary amnesia” is not the same thing as losing him.
They’re still together. They’re technically fine.

"I’m sorry, I am just—” He drops his fork to wave his hand around, the way he does when he's searching for the proper word. He knows enough English words to describe what it is he’s feeling, but they don’t feel like adequate descriptors. My father, the man I loathe, is dying, and there is nothing I can do to save him. Everyone in my life expects so little of me, and I feel as though I may disappear. I feel like, if I did disappear, perhaps the world would be all the better for it. You are the only man in my life who has made me feel happy to take up space. Shane, tell me, what is the English word for this?
Ilya Rozanov's okay, not good, probably bad day.
Set during a liminal space of my design between the All-Star game and Ilya's father's death.

What if Shane never got injured? What if Ilya decided to finally take a step back? What if the 5th best player of MLH was suddenly spotted hanging out hockey's golden boy Shane Hollander? What if Ilya had a few feelings about it? —×— Ilya is aware of Sebastian Hawthorne like he's aware of all the top 10 players of the league. Though he knows no one can come close to him and Hollander, he still likes to keep an eye out for them. Hawthorne, or as his teammates call him, Hawk, joined the Toronto Guardians during his Rookie season and has been there for the past six seasons. He's the assistant captain. “It's like he’s already seen the play unfold five seconds ahead,” Shane had once complained to Ilya over the phone after a particularly nasty loss against the Guardians some seasons back. Ilya then got the impression that Shane didn't like him either. So imagine his surprise when the picture of Hollander and Hawk shows up on his feed: laughing and practically having the time of their lives while leaving a high-end bakery.

“Is he really okay?” Ilya asks, voice broken with worry. “He is, I promise honey. I’m looking after him.” “Okay.” There’s uncertainty still in his voice, but obviously Ilya is aware there’s nothing more he can do from afar right now. “Okay. Thank you. Please. Please just…” Yuna knows his next words before he even gets them out. “Please keep them safe.” And she’s all too quick to promise him. “Of course I will.” -ilya calls yuna when he's at an away game to check on a heavily pregnant shane.- (or , shane giving birth to his first baby, through the POV of yuna hollander)

Ilya Rozanov doesn’t like asking for help, especially at four in the morning. Unfortunately, his appendix doesn’t care about pride. When the pain gets bad enough to force his hand—and Shane is hours away—he calls Yuna. She answers before the second ring. Ilya is dreaming about his mother. At least, he thinks he is. The dream is already slipping away by the time his eyes open and he jolts awake. He can’t remember what she was saying, or even if she was really there, but the feeling of her lingers in his chest. He has just enough time to register that before something else cuts in. A twisting, terrible pressure low in his abdomen. It’s deep and wrong and sudden enough to make him suck in a breath. He lies there in the dark, staring up at the ceiling, trying to get his bearings. It’s nothing, he tells himself because he has a team breakfast tomorrow and he doesn’t have time for this. He can’t afford to be dramatic about a random ache in the middle of the night. So he stays still. Doesn’t shift, doesn’t test it. He waits for it to fade on its own. It doesn’t. It gets worse. Just enough that it’s impossible to ignore. It pulses, sharp in a way that makes his jaw tighten. Sleep is clearly not happening. He closes his eyes anyway, stubborn about it, but every breath seems to set it off again. He wishes, as he does every night, that Shane were there beside him. But Shane is in Montreal, and Ilya is in his Ottawa house, alone in the dark. If Shane were here, he’d probably be sprawled half on top of him asleep, and Ilya would have to nudge him off his chest which would probably wake him up. Shane would probably already be asking what’s wrong… Okay, he thinks. Enough. Ilya shifts toward the edge of the bed, moving carefully, like that might make a difference. Maybe he just needs water or maybe there’s something he can take for the pain. His feet hit the floor and for one stupid second he thinks it’s fine— Then the pain spikes, sudden and blinding, and the room tilts violently. His knees give out before he can grab anything, and he goes down hard onto the floor, the impact jarring and loud in the quiet house. He lies there, gasping, curled around the pain, knowing with cold certainty that this is not something he can ignore. The anger comes next, sharp enough to almost cut through the pain. He’s furious with himself for lying there and being weak. He’s had so many hits on the ice, he’s lost count. He knows how to push through discomfort; it’s practically a job requirement. This shouldn’t be enough to put him on the floor. And then a worse thought slips in, quiet and horrifying that makes him feel so alone, alone and scared. What if he dies like this—alone on his bedroom floor, the house dark and empty, no one even knowing something is wrong. The idea makes his heart race, panicked and uneven. What if he never sees Shane again? The thought is unbearable. He tries to shove it away, to replace it with something simple. He tells himself to get up. To move. To stop being ridiculous. He digs his hands into the floor, tries to push himself upright. It’s not determination so much as instinct. He drags himself across the floor, slow and awkward, the movement setting his stomach on fire. His phone is still on the nightstand. The distance to it feels ridiculous, like it’s on the other side of the house instead of just a few feet away. He gets there eventually and fumbles it into his hand, fingers slick with sweat. The screen lights up the dark. 4:07 a.m. He opens a text to Shane anyway. The blank screen stares back at him. He can picture Shane waking up to it, groggy and alarmed before he’s even fully conscious. Texting him in the middle of the night would send him straight into panic mode, and Ilya can’t do that. He doesn’t want to be the reason Shane spends the rest of the night terrified hours away. He doesn’t know what he would even say. Hey, I think something’s wrong feels like too much. Another spike of pain rips through him, sudden and brutal, bright enough to wipe the thought clean from his head. His breath catches, vision blurring, and his thumb slips off Shane’s name as the decision is made for him. He calls Yuna. He isn’t entirely sure why. Maybe because she’s listed as his emergency contact on a dozen work forms and in his phone, so his brain goes to her automatically. Maybe because she’s close by. Maybe, secretly, because he loves Shane’s mother very much, and she’s the kind of person who will know exactly what to do. She answers before the second ring, and Ilya opens his mouth and realizes he has nothing. The words are tangled up and useless. English refuses to cooperate. For a split second he thinks, If I were still in Russia, I wouldn’t do this. I wouldn’t call anyone. I wouldn’t be this weak.

The sight of the blooming bruise on Ilya's skin is so fucking hot, Shane leaves a second one, just an inch away from the mark that the California girl left.
“Marking your territory, Hollander?” Ilya jokes. He’s teasing, but he’s so fucking hard underneath Shane, it’s obvious he likes this. Because yes, Shane is doing exactly that. In the coming weeks, until these bruises fade, every time Rozanov goes to hook up with someone else, he’ll see these bruises and be reminded that Shane was here.

Between college, his night shift, and the other thing, Shane really doesn't have time to 'get to know' Ilya Rozanov. The man is clearly dangerous and obviously infuriating, and Shane totally does. Not. Have. Time.
Ilya doesn't do attachments, and he never does favors. He shouldn't give in to the urge to take care of this idiot student who was so mean to him, and he really shouldn't become so invested in his well-being.
The one where Ilya's the heir to a mafia syndicate, Shane really needs to get some sleep, and Hayden is not allowed to share his hats. There's passive-aggressive caretaking, more secrets than necessary, and bickering that can be heard through the walls.

Kip is hit with a wave of relief when he sees Scott at the front of the crowd, sweat-dried hair a mess from everyone rubbing his head. He’s out of his pads and jersey, in a black Under Armor shirt Kip has only ever seen in the laundry. The charge of seeing Scott like this, sizzling with energy and salty with sweat, surrounds Kip like a net and pulls him under.

Scott and Kip have only been back together, properly, for three months when Scott comes out. Now it's the summer after.

At a bar in Montreal, Shane is having a drink with Hayden after the rest of the team have left, and two guys approach them, trying to start a fight, calling Shane a slur. Hayden tries to be a good friend, but it's not what Shane needs. OR Shane has a panic attack and Ilya drives two and a half hours in the middle of the night to be with him “Don't stay out too late,” J.J. grinned, patting Hayden's shoulder, then Shane's. “We won't, it's way past Shane's bedtime,” Hayden nodded, earning himself a glare from Shane. Shane watched J.J. leave the bar, then turned to Hayden. Though he'd had a nice time out with the team, he couldn't help but notice himself visibly relax. Yes, everyone on the team knew he was gay now, and some of the them had even pointed out a guy in the bar here and there to ask if Shane may be interested, but, with just Hayden, who knew Shane had no interest in anyone but his boyfriend, it was different. “All those guys could have potential, you know,” Hayden grinned. “You might want to consider it.” Shane rolled his eyes. “Come on, stop.” Hayden sighed. “You know I'm joking,” he said, taking a sip from his beer. “But, you know, I also wouldn't be mad if-” The way Shane glared at him again stopped him. “He's good with kids, I'll give him that.” Shane looked around, then lowered his voice when he spoke. “I don't know how I'd ever tell the others,” he sighed. “I mean, I know they'll find out at some point, but...” “It's fine you're not ready. You told them you were gay, that was a big deal.” Shane nodded slowly. “I know,” he said quietly. “I just wish they'd stop trying to find me a guy. They always do that.” “I think they'd try even harder if they knew.” Shane looked at his hands, both wrapped around his glass. He didn't like it, but he knew Hayden was right. “At least they support you. Can't blame them for trying to find someone for you.” “I guess.” He knew he should have got used to people knowing about him by now, but even though he'd told his team mates himself, he still found it strange that now, more and more people talked about it every day. It wasn't like he was the only gay hockey player that was out, thanks to Scott Hunter, and yet, it felt different. He could imagine Scott Hunter put pressure on himself too, but he seemed to be more sure of himself, more confident in who he was. Shane was still working on that. Scott Hunter also wasn't keeping his relationship a secret. “Hey, man, are you okay?” Shane lifted his gaze to Hayden again. But before he could respond, he heard his name, his attention drawn to two men sitting at the bar. “Yeah, that's him.” Shane tensed when he locked eyes with the man that had said his name. They didn't look like they were about to ask him to sign something. “Can't believe he's still fucking playing.” Hayden had noticed too, sitting up straighter as he watched them. “You guys got a problem with my friend?” he asked, calm, but ready to stand up for Shane. “Hayden,” Shane warned. “Yeah, I've got a problem with your friend,” one of the men huffed, sliding from the bar stool and approaching their table. Shane swallowed, his heart beating faster. The other man followed closely behind. “We used to like you, you know,” he said, now directly addressing Shane. “But now we know you're a little f-” “Shut up,” Hayden snapped. Shane's pulse slammed into his throat, too loud, too fast. He didn't want to fight anyone in a bar, he didn't want Hayden to fight anyone in a bar because of him, but he also felt like his heart was beating so fast that it may jump out of his chest. “What? You gay too, Pike?” one of them laughed. Shane had read tweets and articles, even though Ilya always tried to distract him when he started scrolling and reading hate, he'd been booed at games, and he'd heard comments made about him, but it had never been like this before. It was one of the reasons he'd thought about never coming out. One of the men was close to Hayden now, towering over him, and Shane's hands clenched into fists, but he still couldn't move. He wondered if he was having a heart attack. The words blurred. The bar blurred. Voices, shuffling, chairs scraping. His heart was so fast and he couldn't focus on anything else. He gasped for air, but there wasn't enough. “Shane?” He tried to inhale again, but couldn't get enough air past the tightness in his chest. “Shane?” Hayden's face came into focus in front of him, just for a moment, then his vision blurred again. “I can't breathe.”

He meant to have this conversation months ago, if he’s honest.
Truly, he’d planned on reaching out. Had tweaked his usual Instagram message, the one that both offers condolences and community. Scott didn’t figure that Rozanov would respond particularly well to that level of sincerity, especially given the lack of details around his family life – even after his father’s death had been announced by the media. Instead, he’d decided to throw in a light chirp and remove some of the apologies as a middle ground solution.
________________Or, Scott planned to reach out to Rozanov over the summer about his father. But now -- at the Opening Banquet for the 2017-2018 NHL Season -- is as good of a time as any.

It's January 2017 and Shane is still dating Rose Landry. After a solid week of feeling off and under the weather, Rose convinces Shane to see a doctor before he takes the ice in the Montreal vs. Boston game that night. But then, Ilya goes down on the ice after a hit from Comeau and doesn’t wake up. It is in that moment that Shane realizes two things: he’s in love with Ilya and Ilya is also in love with him. Why else would he have Shane on his list of people to contact in an emergency. Anya’s barking continues. At this rate, he will need to check on her at the very least to stop the headache that is slowly forming behind his eyes. “Anya! Come on!” Shane calls once more as he sets his phone down on the small table next to his seat, along with his half-finished coffee. Suddenly, before he can register what is happening, Shane feels a strong arm snake around his torso. Rough fibers scratching the exposed skin of his stomach where the hoodie remained unzipped, leaving him exposed. Just as a cry of shock starts to work its way up his throat, a gloved hand reaches around his mouth, smothering anything that would have left his lips. The arm around his middle tightens, and he feels the hard, cold tap of metal against his waist where he assumes his attacker’s hand is. 'A gun'.
....
“Grab him. I’ll start the car and we can get out of here.” Joe says over his shoulder as he makes his way to the front door.

When Shane starts the document, it makes sense to him.
Later on, when it’s published onto a hundred different gossip sites with hundreds of comments dissecting every word, it looks insane.
It starts because Shane has no one to talk to about everything. He’s never even kept a journal. He balks at the thought of getting a therapist. It’s not like he’s going to risk writing it down physically for someone to find. The only logical way that Shane can think of to deal with his feelings is to open up a blank Google Docs page and start writing.
or Shane decides to write down all his feelings instead of talking to Ilya. After years of writing about their relationship, the entire document gets leaked online.
