  1. “Why are you here?”

“You see,” Rozanov drawls, “twenty-two years ago, my parents decide they fuck and –”

“Ugh. Shut up.” Shane scowls. “No, I mean – why here?” why now?

The smirk slides off Rozanov’s face. “They want –” he swallows, bringing one arm up to drape over his eyes. “The team I play for. During lockout. They… disagree about rest of season. Tell me I stay.”

    “But they can’t do that!”

Rozanov gives him a sardonic smirk.

When Rozanov’s Russian team doesn’t want to let him return to the MLH after the 2012-13 lockout, Shane finds himself pulled into a harebrained scheme to make sure his rival is safe – and it might just work. Now he only has to navigate a secret pretend relationship while also facing the condensed MLH season. But needs must, right?

  2. “Boring?” Shane asked, heart in his throat. The wet thumb on his chin stroked his bottom lip lightly, almost reverently, and Shane tried not to feel too light-headed from that simple touch. “No,” Ilya finally replied quietly, his gaze melting into something unbearably warm as it took Shane apart. “Boring is better.” Fuck, who let him say things like this? “I’ll find you one. A good replacement. No more smoking.” “Hollander,” Ilya deadpanned. “I will not suck your dick every time I want cigarette.” Shane made a show of rolling his eyes, trying—and failing—not to blush at Ilya’s crude language. “Fuck you. I wasn’t saying that." Or, Ilya starts smoking again, and Shane suggests lollipops to help him quit. It might be the best and worst idea he's ever had.

  3. “Can I ask you something?”

There’s a flash of what looks like fear that crosses Ilya's face before he sits back, his posture slightly closed off as his arms cross in front of his chest. “Depends on what it is,” he says, eyes somewhat steely.

She gets why people are intimidated by him on the ice.

“Why Ottawa?” She knows it’s something everyone has been asking, but she feels like it’s a legitimate thing to ask. “I mean, I get maybe you’re not happy in Boston, but you could have gone anywhere.”

“Not anywhere,” he says with an almost pout.

    “But almost anywhere.”

He lets out a long breath of air through his nose. “I know it does not make sense, but it should not have to make sense to anyone but me.”

Kate tilts her head to the side, appraising him from across the table. “That’s not an answer.”

Ilya shrugs, but he holds her gaze steadily. “Maybe one day you will understand. But for now, know I am where I am supposed to be.”

And who is she to argue with that?

    __

Or, everyone asks 'why Ottawa?' Ilya's neighbor, Kate, just happens to figure it out first.

  4. By the time Shane washes his face, brushes his teeth and packs, there's no time to change. So he's stuck wearing the sweatshirt to the airport while mentally being grateful that it's not a tight neon t-shirt that shows the two barbells poking through both his nipples. Let this be a lesson. Never look at pictures of your situationship with his tongue down beautiful women's throats and go on a jealousy tirade to live a wild night in a city like Las Vegas. Or, Shane gets accidental nipple piercings and Ilya misunderstands.

  5. Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.

It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.

  6. Ilya is recovering after the brain surgery but recovery rerely is a straight line. And Ilya, done with hospitals, is up to mischief. Fortunately, Shane is there to make sure Ilya stays alive.

This is set between "Hold On (I Still Want You)" and "Come Back (I Still Need You)" and focuses on Ilya's recovery after the brain surgery he underwent. It can be read as stand-alone but I think it's probably best to read at least first part of my series to get some context!

  8. “Shane,” Ilya tried again, savouring the snap to attention it earned him, “Take off your clothes. I want to swim with you.” They’ve spent years hiding what they are to each other in hotel rooms with locked doors and stolen hours in the dark. But at Shane’s lake cottage, there’s no one watching and nowhere to hide. When Ilya dives in and calls Shane to follow, it’s the first time they’ve ever done this in daylight, and everything about it feels like stepping off a cliff.

  9. Hanahaki disease is not supposed to happen to actual people, sitting on actual stairwells with sweat cooling on their skin, with an actual game in two days that has a sponsorship contract riding on it. It’s not supposed to happen off-screen, without violins and an audience.
And it definitely isn’t supposed to happen to the first Asian-Canadian MVP of the National Hockey League.
Shane curls his fingers slowly around the petal, like if he hides it, if he doesn’t look at it, it might stop being real.

Ilya played like shit, he was willing to admit that. He couldn’t get his head out of Hollander’s ass, and even his hits on him were half hearted. Shane scored on him twice, and he had spent the game avoiding the one person he wanted to talk to most. He had written out three texts before the game, and two after, all five were unsent. It felt like groveling to admit there was something missing to be in Montreal and not with Shane. But he had Rose Landry now. *** A new take on the club scene*** Red lights, strobes, the smell of sweat in the air. Bodies on bodies and the smell of alcohol in the air. The perfect place to get his mind off of one Shane Hollander. He hadn’t been able to look at him during the game, too scared of what his own reaction might be. Rose Landry had been at the game, and the announcers were all too happy to put her on the jumbotron often enough that Ilya was starting to think they had a grudge against him. Everytime she was shown she was cheering, showing off her Hollander jersey, or blowing kisses towards Shane. He took his phone out, checking the homescreen willing that the name Jane was there. It wasn’t, he pushed his phone back in his pocket, turning his full attention back to where his team mates were leaning against the bar, chatting up the bartender. He leans in close to the girl, her tits were on display, and Ilya made a show of glancing down and then back up at her, she blushed and asked for his order, he gave it back quickly. A double shot of vodka neat. He didn’t want to remember tonight, needed his mind off Hollander. She placed the drink in front of him, taking his card to start a tab. She waved at someone down the bar, and Ilya followed the wave and his eyes landed on Miles. Rose Landry’s friend. Miles met Ilya’s eyes and picked his hand up in a wave of acknowledgement. If Miles was here, Rose was here, Shane was here. He snatched the glass up and turns around as slowly as he can, his eyes raking across the dance floor, looking at every person. He was praying Shane wasn’t here, that he wasn’t here with Rose, that his own suffering wouldn’t be amplified tonight. He kept his face as firm as possible, trying not to betray the fear in his stomach. His eyes landed on Shane. No. Not here. Not now. His hands were on her waist, her hands were pushing up his shirt, touching his abs, and he was laughing. Why did he never laugh like that around Ilya? Shane never went to clubs. His mouth went dry watching the exchange, gripping the glass he brought it up to his mouth, taking it all in one go. His eyes never leave the couple on the dance floor. A woman comes up to him, draping her arms on his shoulders. “Hey, I could be what you’re looking for so intensely” He rips his gaze off the dance floor to the pretty brunette hanging off of him. He needed a distraction and he needed it now. Give Hollander a taste of his own medicine, he would see him eventually. And his attention would be on this woman. He gave her a smirk and guided her to the dancefloor, positioning her body to rub up against him. He tried to focus on the way her body moved, how she felt under his touch, but his eyes kept drifting to Hollander and Rose. Hollander was glancing around, almost like he was looking for something, and he wasn’t paying much mind to Rose. Ilya pushed his nose into her throat, kissing up the column of it, she moans and rubs back against him appreciatively. The next glance he takes he sees Rose alone with Miles, he picks his head up searching for Hollander, finding him staring at Ilya from across the floor his face was blank but his eyes were following Ilya’s hands as he touched her chest. Good, maybe he would feel the hurt that was plaguing him right now. Shane’s eyes touched Ilya’s for a moment, then he was walking towards him. Nope, time to bail. He couldn’t talk to him right now, one word and his whole facade would crumble. “Gotta go. Bathroom.” He whispers in her ear and she kisses his cheek before finding the next closest available guy and begins grinding on him. Ilya didn't glance back to see how far Hollander had gotten, but he picked up the pace, heading to the bathrooms. The hallway where they are located is shockingly empty, and he is able to slip into one of the private single bathroom rooms, slamming the door behind him and locking it quickly. Did Shane chase him through the club? He goes to the sink, staring at his reflection. He was pathetic, trying not to cry over his hook up having a girlfriend. Images of his hands on her passed through his brain, of her seeing Shane’s face when he cums, getting to kiss him in public, hold his hand. It feels like there is a boulder on his chest and a marble in his throat. He tried to steady himself in the mirror. Shane was with Rose Landry, he didn’t need Ilya anymore. He could be happy with her, in public. But why did it hurt so much? Heavy banging shook him from his despair, someone was knocking on the door. Ilya willed it to go away, closing his eyes. But the knocking just got heavier. “Occupied.” His voice broke and he wiped his face off. The banging stopped momentarily before coming back again. “It’s me, Rozanov. Let me in.” “Occupied.” Shane. It was him banging on the door. He had followed him here. But he couldn’t let him see him like this. “Rozanov, if you don’t let me in, I will wait for you to come out.” Ilya trudged towards the door, pausing to take a deep breath before slipping the lock out of place. Jumping back like it burned him, he slid away from the door and leaned on the sink facing the mirror, he couldn’t face him. Not like this. The door is shoved open roughly, like he was expecting to meet resistance. Shane slipped inside and locked the door behind him, then leaned on it facing Ilya’s back. He could see him in the mirror with his hands in his pockets. Now that he was inside, he must have lost confidence. “What do you want, Hollander?”

  14. “Hey,” Ilya’s voice, deep and rough, resonates through Shane all the way down to the bottoms of his feet. He turns his head toward the sound, but doesn’t open his eyes, instead opting just to keep the blissed-out look on his face as he waits to hear what Ilya’s going to say. Shane imagines it’ll be something like, ‘You are perfect. Such a good boy.’ Or maybe in Russian, ‘I love you so much.’ But much more likely, ‘I give you ten minutes, and then I blow you in the shower.’ Fingers brush against his cheek, and Shane leans into the touch, lost in the feeling of being loved and wanted so wholly. And then, “Would you still love me if I was a worm?” His eyes open, and he wonders if his dopamine-addled brain has just misheard. “I’m sorry. What?”

Ilya's POV for I Like Jane For You

The same mix-up leaves Ilya with someone else's boring phone for three days. It does not contain as many secrets. It does contain more Hollander, more pregnant nudies, and it comes with constant annoying updates from Hayden Pike.

Ilya cannot help but to be curious so he does as the message says and checks his Twitter account, even though he has been awake only three seconds and he doesn’t trust Hayden Pike as far as he can throw him.

  17. Ilya’s laugh is loud and delighted and absolutely infuriating. He leans back on his hands, eyes lighting up like Shane just told him the funniest joke ever. “Oh my god,” he says, murmuring something in Russian that’s too quick for Shane’s mind to translate. “You want to have a not- sex competition.” Shane shrugs. “You said I couldn’t resist you so…” “Hollander,” Ilya says fondly, shaking his head, “You have finally lost it.” “Or,” Shane counters, stepping closer, “You’re just not used to losing.” Ilya’s grin widens. He looks Shane up and down, slow and obvious. Shane’s body has never been subtle where Ilya is concerned and he can’t help the heat that floods his cheeks with Ilya’s eyes on him so intensely. “Fine,” Ilya says easily. “We’ll see how long you last.” Shane doesn’t hesitate. “Longer than you will.” ____ 5 times they don’t give in, +1 time someone finally does

  18. Based very loosely on events from The Long Game that my brain wanted to put into the first book, somewhere between Shane’s injury, and before Scott Hunter wins the cup - for maximum angst, obviously.

What if Ilya’s plane had actually crashed? And what if it had happened before he and Shane had the chance to confess their love and know what it was like to be together.

  19. It starts with Shane running out of Ilya’s apartment after one too‑intimate moment over a tuna melt. He tries to bury it by dating Rose Landry, but the Montreal club night blows everything open jealousy, staring, avoidance, all of it. Rose eventually breaks up with him gently, seeing the truth he can’t say out loud. At the All‑Star Game, things shift from canon. Ilya avoids Shane completely, never realizing Shane and Rose are over. Then Shane’s injury happens. As opposing captain, Ilya visits him in the hospital, only to have a pain‑med‑softened Shane ask him to come to his family cottage. Ilya says “maybe,” assuming Shane won’t remember, and ghosts him again. Months later, on summer break in Spain, Ilya wanders into the Gaixample and finds himself surrounded by openly queer couples happy, unafraid, everything he’s never let himself imagine. Something cracks open. He thinks of Shane. He texts him. Does Shane remember the invitation? And does Ilya go?
