Check the news, Hayden Pike texts him, and it is news to Ilya that he has this man’s number at all, and that he is even saved under his own name and not just an unknown number. Ilya cannot help but to be curious so he does as the message says and checks his Twitter account, even though he has been awake only three seconds and he doesn’t trust Hayden Pike as far as he can throw him.

Eventually, they have to talk about it.
The world resumes its spins. The sex runs out. They kiss until their lips are bruised and they make up for lost time in any way that they can, and Ilya only leaves the hotel room to get food for them both. It is the middle of the night and their heartbeats have returned to normal. The silence has finally sunk in.
Shane whispers, “Talk now?”
Ilya kisses him on the forehead. “Talk now.”

Did you figure anything out? Shane writes, and flips the page around for Ilya to read it.
Wont like the answer, Ilya’s written, in his quick hand.
So he doesn’t have to take the pen back, Shane just shrugs. What?
Ilya sits down at the desk for a steady surface to explain.
3 things
1 its curse. if true we can break it
2 its spell. if true we can break it
3 we are soulmates. if true we are fucked“No,” Shane mutters, before he can stop himself. Immediately, he slams a hand over his mouth.
or: Ilya and Shane are soulmates, and their bond prevents them from both talking and being apart. Unfortunately, the only thing that’ll make the pain stop is confessing the one thing they can say: that they’re in love.

Hi. This is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail. The greeting wasn’t a joke or an exaggeration—it was the truth. Shane leaves messages anyway, confessions to a digital void that will never judge him, and never push him away. At least, that’s what he thinks.

"WouldyoustilllovemeifIwasaloon?" Shane blurted. At that, Ilya clicked his phone shut, dropped it on his chest, and gazed straight into Shane's eyes. "What?" Ilya asked. "You heard me. Would you still love me if I was a loon?" Shane could feel his cheeks turning hot. "Why would you be loon?" Ilya's brows furrowed in obvious confusion. "How would you turn into loon?" Everything was going smoothly. The plan was working soon they could breathe. The foundation was doing great, the camps were working, Ottawa was getting better since Ilya became captain of the team and their relationship....it was so good that they were true with themselves, their close friends and family. Well that's what Shane thought until the wall crumbled and he saw the brutal truth right in front of him. + Everything happens back to back. The boys don't take a break until summer Everything was going smoothly. The plan was working soon they could breathe. The foundation was doing great, the camps were working, Ottawa was getting better since Ilya became captain of the team and their relationship....it was so good that they were true with themselves, their close friends and family. Well that's what Shane thought until the wall crumbled and he saw the brutal truth right in front of him Ilya hadn't been himself for a while now. But their schedules didn't help them to actually talk about serious stuff when one of them flew away or had practice. Anytime they meet Shane would forget about this concern and drown in their lustful time together. ....... It all happened too fast for Shane to catch up. It was just a party And Shane didn't realize that it wasn't just the party it was everything. They both said many things. Things both of them regretted. They had their biggest fight they had in years And Shane didn't hold back. He fired back. He didn't hold back and said some nasty things to Ilya. Why did he ask him ? Why did he push for the answer ? Why did he push him ? WOULD YOU CHOOSE ME? He was an asshole He had been crying since he left Ilya. Would Ilya choose shane? Really!! He already did!!! Ilya gave so much for them. He had left a great team to move to Ottawa and be closer to Shane. God, he made his boyfriend move to his hometown. Away from the friends he made in Boston, even the complicated friendship he had with Svetlana. He had friends and family that supported him and expected Ilya to be cool that his friends and family accepted him as Shane's boyfriend?? It was true that Ilya only had people that were from Shane's side as friends. Their fight really wasn't about the party It was because Ilya wanted...no, he needed to breathe. Ilya and shane had talked briefly, both had games elsewhere not having the time to meet and talk. Only from facetime that was limited by the schedules. But it was enough to give them some air to breathe. But they would talk when they were both home.

A squawk, followed by an incensed, “Jesus! It’s Hayden! Hayden Pike! Shane’s best friend? A guy you’ve played against for years?” Oh. This is… not good. Ilya very slowly lowers himself down on the bed, spine straight. “Why are you calling?” Pike huffs. “Trust me, I don’t want to be.” “Okay, then, why? How do you know… Lily?” A beat. Then, “You’re Lily.” Protectiveness rears its ugly head. Severely, Ilya declares, “This is none of your fucking concern.” “He’s asking for you.” OR: when Shane gets hurt on the ice, Hayden Pike reaches out to Boston Lily.

“I do sometimes still think about how my life would have been if I never got injured,” Shane started to whisper. Ilya looked at him, he was focused on the ceiling. He grabbed his hand and placed it over his own chest. “But, you know, I’m glad that it led me here. To you,” the fondness that laced his tone opened Ilya in half. Ilya laid on his side, so he could contemplate him better. The sigh of Shane naked, only with the light sheet covering little of his modesty had something divine about it. “Maybe we could have met either way.” AU where neither of them play professional hockey but they make their way to each other eventually (Kids' coach shane and uncle ilya fall in love one practice at a time -and gay bar flirting-)

"Waitt a minute Barrett why'd ya take a drink," Young slurred with his eyes narrowed, "Harris don't play hockey." Well shit. Of course one of the rookies had to notice, those morons never let anything go. So now everyone and their fucking mothers had turned to stare at Troy who could only let out an awkward laugh. Well this sobered him up. "Harris probably wasn't the first guy he slept with you idiot, he grew up playing hockey maybe it was an old teammate," Holmber said to Young whom he was still currently draped over. "Nooo papa Hazy said professional hockey player, so it has to be someone in the league," Young argued back. The rookies had all taken to calling Wyatt variations of dad and followed him around like a bunch of baby ducks. Troy woulda laughed at the endearing nickname was he not about to get his shit rocked by a 6' 3'' Russian in the parking lot. Because of every hockey player Troy Barrett could've slept with he just had to hook up with Shane mother fucking Hollander. ----- Or the Ottawa Centaurs play never have I ever ----- UPDATE

Honestly, it was a miracle they had won the Cup this past season, with how divided the team had become. And it was no one’s fault but his own, Shane thought. That’s why he had been so determined to win. To prove himself. To earn back his teammates' respect. To fix the divide. If that meant more pressure on himself, stricter dieting, more workouts, more time spent at the rink, ignoring quips and small acts of defiance against him, playing through any pain or illness, then he had decided that’s what he would do.

"It is our first game of the season against them. But it is their first against us too. They may have won cups, may have been higher in the ranking. But they are not the same. They are weak. They are missing what made them special, who made them important." Ilyas eyes lingered on Shanes face before he turned back to address the room, slowly spinning to look all his team mates in the eyes. “Do story time, pease” Irina says with a sleepy pout, and Shane could hear Jackie’s soft “aww”. He smiles as he watches Ilya’s gaze soften, staring at his daughter for a moment before nodding once. ‘Story time’ referred to Irina’s nightly bedtime story; she usually needed at least 2 books read with the occasional scene getting acted out before she could fall asleep. Hayden is usually the only other person Irina allows to do story time, enjoying how he changes his voice for each character, so Shane knows this is a big deal. “Once again I am betrayed” Hayden grumbles and Shane pats his shoulder in sympathy before walking down the corridor. He hears Ilya following him and can’t help the fluttering in his chest. Shane and Irina’s lives were never going to be the same again. He can’t remember the last time he was this happy. - How the rest of the night went when Ilya and Shane reunited after 5 years.

“I'm sorry, are we... friends?” Ilya knows he's in too deep, has for a while. That's why he's decided to end it once and for all, and now is the perfect moment to do just that. Hollander doesn't remember him, and everything they've done. He doesn't know him, doesn't trust him, probably doesn't even like him. He should shake his head no, right now. No, they weren't friends. Ilya was just the captain of the opposing team, here to offer his condolences. Hollander would accept it at face value. That's it, clean cut. “No, boyfriends.”

Sometimes, it feels like they’re two planets caught in the same volatile orbit. Shane spends his nights wondering why the girls in the rinkside seats feel like white noise while every single highlight reel of Ilya Rozanov feels like a secret rendezvous. Ilya spends his afternoons wondering if the heavy thrumming in his heart whenever Shane pins him against the boards is hate, or if it’s the only thing that makes him feel human. All Ilya knows is that he would have been there to tell him that a lost game wasn’t the end of the world, and he would have iced the bruises on Shane’s back. Their story is a road movie. It’s a double-feature. Two boys striking out across a field of wildflowers in Ottawa, while desire, like a monster, crawls up out of a lake nearby. All of us are wondering if these two boys will find a way to figure things out. One cuts a lock of his hair with a steak knife in the restroom of a gas station. He knows he’s desperate to subvert expectations. Expectations of being the golden boy, the very best, the pride of his family. The other smothers a cigarette on the ground with the toe of his scuffed-up boot. He presses down on it, hard, and it almost feels like a part of his bruised heart gets smashed into the tile too. One boy, half-destroyed, and the other, half-complete. Both screaming into the space between their faces as they run across a field, watching the sky around them transform from dark night into the coming of dawn. It’s not just the warmth of the glow of sunrise they’re feeling, no. There’s something more there that makes their hearts flutter, something that settles into the pits of their stomachs as Shane grabs onto Ilya’s hand. The world still looks the same to Ilya, but when he squints a little harder, he realizes it burns brighter. It’s shinier, and it’s sunnier. It’s better. OTTAWA, 2005 There is a kind of love between them that Ilya doesn’t quite know how to describe. A love that blazes in innocence, born on a Tuesday afternoon in a downtown community rink. Warm, damp grass grazes Ilya’s palms as he leans back on his hands outside the arena, letting himself bathe in the slow midday heat. It feels like soft kisses across his face. Something he never knew and felt in the biting winters of his childhood in Moscow. It’s nice. Shane braces himself with a wince as he feels the ice beneath his palms etch into his skin like a blade after a particularly hard fall. He feels the glaring floodlights burn holes into his back, right through his jersey. “How do you do it?” “Do what?” Two boys with their shoulders pressed against each other’s as they lean over the boards. Shane with his custom skates that are glossy with crisp red lines running across the middle. He’d leave behind clean lines in the ice as he weaved around the slower skaters. Ilya looks back down at his own skates. They’re rentals, and a jarring industrial blue. Not the shiny finish of Shane’s skates, no. It’s the kind of plastic that makes you scrunch your nose up in disgust. He runs his fingers across the dozens of scratches and scuff marks. He’d leave odd-shaped gashes in the ice after ramming himself into the boards in an effort to slow down. “I wish I could skate like you.” Ilya bumps the toe of his skates against the boards. “Well, if you come here every Tuesday, I can teach you,” Shane says, glancing behind his back. “Oh, really?” Ilya asks, his accent still clipped. “Yeah.” Ilya never returns to the rink. His family moves again, chasing work and a life that he’s never quite entirely sure belongs to him. He clutches a small, crumpled hockey trading card Shane had signed for him as a joke. All he can think about in the car is the distance growing between them as the engine revs, away from the only boy who didn’t care that Ilya was the “weird foreign kid” that nobody wanted to get close to. A sign overhead whizzes past, and Ilya can barely make out the words on it as he clambers to peer through the backseat windows.

“Because I can’t fucking do this, Ilya. I’m going to my parents’, I- I need a break, alright? Shit.” Shane’s gaze locked onto his keys and he picked them up, stalking towards the door. He needed a break from the arguing and he needed to go somewhere he could breathe and collect his thoughts, so he could process this correctly and talk about it with Ilya civilly. Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place. - Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships). or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue

It kind of looks like junk, at first. Just a random collection of items, like the lost property box at the arena for things the cleaners find after games. But Shane quickly realises that the collection isn’t random at all. No, this is a box of memories. Ilya’s memories of Shane.
