Yuna wants to want this. David already calls him 'son'. Ilya is clearly trying, so over a hockey game and a bottle of Merlot, she tries too.

  2. Twelve years after filming their first CCM ad together, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are asked to return for a follow-up campaign. The offer sparks reflection and conversation about privacy, visibility, and what it means to exist openly as a married couple in the NHL. --- “Okay,” Farah said, brightly. “So. CCM reached out.” Shane straightened instinctively. He and Ilya were both sponsored by CCM, they had been for years. Would CCM pull their sponsorships now that they were publicly out? Would they only want to keep working with one of them now that they were married and would be playing on the Centaurs together this season? “They want you two for a new ad campaign,” she continued, eyes sparkling. “A twelve-year retrospective referencing the one you shot together the summer before your rookie year.”

  3. “What are these?” Yuna hears Ilya ask. He’s standing with his back to her in front of the armoire next to the couch, looking up at the shelves. She’d been on her way back into the living room with after-dinner coffee when she’d paused at the threshold. Shane steps toward the armoire, coming up behind Ilya and curling both arms around his waist. “Um, trophies from when I was a kid. Like, minor hockey leagues and tournaments and stuff.” Ilya moves his head from left to right slowly, scanning the array of trophies and medals on the shelf. “Is big business? Making meaningless awards for tiny hockey players?” “They aren’t meaningless,” Shane protests, but he sounds a little sheepish. “Yes, I’m sure the…” Ilya leans in close to read the plaque on one trophy, “‘Sportsmanship Award’ for the U7 Snowflake Classic was very prestigious.” Shane rolls his eyes, but he’s laughing. “They don’t have awards like this in Russia?” Or: Yuna bonds with Ilya, one plastic trophy at a time.

  4. “I… don’t know how to say this,” Shane starts, slow, like he’s speaking to a wounded animal. “Honestly, I’m not sure how she found us, really. Maybe you should sit down, baby.” But Ilya doesn’t get a second to sit down, because the door behind Shane is opening, and Ilya is turning around, and— “Zdravstvuyte,” says the girl. “Uncle Ilya?” Sometime in the future, Ilya & Shane have a visitor.

  6. It's time to refresh the fluff pieces about NHL players to fill out sports programming. A new spin has added in interviews with the player's family. Ilya doesn’t have many options, but decides maybe Shane wouldn't mind sharing. Set a couple years into Ilya playing for Ottawa. “We want to make a new video for you, now that you’ve moved to the Centaurs,” the sports media producer was addressing Ilya, but was looking at his agent. “Something a little more grown up, though still keeping your brand.” Ilya was sick of his brand. He wished desperately that he could bring Yuna to these meetings; he'd begun to trust her opinions at least as much as his agent's. But he wouldn’t know how to explain her presence, so he muddled through. “-capture the work you do with your charity, as well as your new house, your fewer cars...” the producer’s eyes flicked to him briefly, as if some part of him didn’t believe those were Ilya's choices. They certainly weren’t “on brand.” “I think it’s a great idea,” his agent said, her professional smile in place as always. “We don’t want anyone to forget about Ilya Rozanov.” Ilya gave a short laugh, crossing his arms. “I am not going to let them.” “Wonderful! Now there is one part I wanted to run by you right away, because it might take some doing to line up.” The producer passed a few papers over. Ilya barely glanced at them. “We’ve been doing some snippets with player’s families in our recent profiles. And I was hoping we could do the same for you?” Now the man was staring intently at Ilya. Under those eyes, Ilya locked down anything his face wanted to do. Better to keep it blank, as his heart ached. What family could he offer? His mother was dead. He was doing a great job at never speaking to his brother again. He couldn’t share Shane, the only person who felt like home. Svetlana wouldn’t want the attention, given the assumptions that would be made and her experiences with her father’s fame. He had to look away from the producer, blinking at the big windows that looked out onto more tall buildings. He wished for Yuna again, the way that Shane described how she could see through bullshit and get what was best. To stand up to these people who just wanted to make money off him so that at least he got the same back in return. An idea started to form: Yuna, and David too with his quiet supportive presence. Ilya started to smile, turning back to the fancy business man. He straightened, leaning his elbows against the table. “I don’t believe it will be as hard as you think. Can get two things done at once, in fact.” The puzzled look that grew into surprise was something Ilya enjoyed greatly. He loved to be able to surprise and shock - even in a business meeting. . “You told them to interview my parents for your family segment?” Shane’s face scrunched in confusion in the light from his phone screen, but showed none of the panic Ilya had been afraid of. “Yes, and it’s fine because I would know them. Yuna runs the foundation named after my mother. Is sweet story,” Ilya said, needing Shane to know he’d thought this through, he wasn’t going to endanger the plan. “I got to know her, she took me under her wing, invited me home for dinner so I met David. I am like second son.” Ilya grinned his wickedest smile. “Favorite son even.” “Stop trying to steal my parents,” Shane scolded, but his face was split with its own smile. “Very rude behavior, you need to do better if you want to be Canadian.” “Yes, yes.” Ilya gazed at his phone screen and then sighed dramatically. “I wish you were here.” “Same. Very rude of you being told to come to Montreal while I’m away,” Shane said, shifting against hotel room pillows. “Ah, rude, rude, I am being so rude,” Ilya rolled his eyes. He leaned against the headboard in Shane’s bedroom, wearing one of Shane’s sweatshirts. He’d probably sleep with Shane’s pillow tonight once the call was over. “You cannot train me not to be asshole, so you must still like it.” “Mhm,” was Shane’s response to that. It was really unfair that the light from the screen seemed to highlight his freckles. Ily slid down in the bed, getting more comfortable. “You have room to yourself, yes?” Shane shifted as well, propping himself up now. “I sure do. Do you have some suggestions of what I should do with that privacy?” “A couple. Let us start with you taking shirt off.” --- The camera crew had set up in the living room, as Yuna had directed them. With David in the kitchen making coffee and tea for everyone, Yuna approached the producer. “You want to do just the piece about Ilya today?” The man, Jake, nodded. “We want a different background between this and the one for Shane. Somewhere in Montreal is what we’re currently thinking.” “That makes sense,” Yuna said, and it sort of did. The man had a vision and he wasn’t going to let this hiccup stop that. She wondered if he would have really traveled to Russia if that’s what it took to get Ilya’s story. “What format are we working with?” Jake gave a half smile she didn't believe. “That’s right, you’re probably old hat at things like this.” “When your son is as talented as mine, you get used to it.” Yuna knew her pride for Shane came through without her trying.

  7. “You wrote about us having sex while Hayden watches!”

“Fictional us,” Ilya corrects. “Real us would never do that. Probably.” He pauses. “Unless …”

    “No!”

Ilya Rozanov has always been competitive. But when his husband’s best friend starts calling a little too often, Ilya discovers a new arena for dominance: Archive of Our Own.

Armed with a pseudonym that fools absolutely no one, explicit tags that would make a sailor blush, and a truly impressive commitment to pettiness, Ilya wages psychological warfare one kudos at a time. His weapon of choice? Extremely detailed fanfiction about why Hayden Pike will never, ever measure up.

    The problem? Hayden writes back.

What follows is the most unhinged rivalry in hockey history: a battle fought not with fists or slapshots, but with comment sections, kudos, and increasingly creative ways to humiliate each other in front of thousands of readers. Featuring: footnoted statistics, educational sex advice, one very concerned wife, and Shane Hollander wondering what the hell he did to deserve this.

  9. He used to visit his mother all the time when he was in Moscow for the off-season. He’d take bouquets of marigolds and sunflowers, and he’d decorate her grave with them to try and brighten it up. He’d even placed a little solar powered lantern there for nighttime, so she wouldn’t feel so frightened of the dark. It’s silly, probably. He knows she isn’t really there; knows that nothing is left of her but bones, by now. But still. Ilya had left it there anyway, just in case. He’ll never get to visit his mama’s grave again.

  10. “Where is my baby?” Ilya asks as soon as he opens the door to the Pikes’ SUV when it pulls into the parking lot of Christ Church Cathedral.

“Lovely to see you too, Rozanov,” Hayden says as he opens his car door.

“Hi, Hayden,” Shane says from behind Ilya. “Lovely to see you. Please ignore my husband.”

Ilya can’t even be bothered to snark back at either of them, because today is his big day.

Well, mostly. It’s sort of Amber’s day, too, he guesses, and kind of Shane’s as well if one were to look at it from a very specific angle, but mostly it’s Ilya’s.

And as Amber gives him a cheesy grin when she sees him (a new development as of the last couple of weeks), Ilya knows even his boring husband and his boring husband’s loser best friend can’t ruin this perfect day.

Because today, Ilya’s becoming a godfather.

  12. Ilya had not expected the way Shane's parents' cared for Shane to ever extend to him. Except, they kept trying to do exactly that. Shane said it was just them. Being them. So when they casually mentioned that he was family now… Ilya wanted to believe them. He did not know how to be in a family, though. He didn’t think his was ever functional enough to count as an experience of a real family. Could he count the years with just his mother? Were the two of them enough to make up a family? He wasn't sure. Ilya just knew, he did not want to get it wrong with Shane. Or Shane’s family. And so he had to go when they called.

  15. Ilya Rozanov has exactly one problem with his secret relationship with Shane Hollander: Scott Hunter has more fanfiction than them. The solution is obvious. They’ll just have to make the internet ship them harder. What could possibly go wrong? Or in which two NHL players discover AO3, decide to manipulate their public image to generate more fanfiction, and not so accidentally come out in the process. Featuring: competitive nonsense, live television mishaps, and one very distressed Scott Hunter. Ilya is sprawling across Shane’s ridiculously expensive couch in Montreal when he discovers the betrayal. “Shane,” he says, and his voice has that particular quality that makes Shane look up immediately from where he’s chopping vegetables in the kitchen. It’s the tone that means Ilya has found something on the internet that will derail their entire evening. “No,” Shane says preemptively. “You do not even know what I am saying.” “I know that tone.” Shane points the knife at him, then seems to remember that’s probably not safe and puts it down. “That’s your ‘I found something online and now I’m going to be weird about it’ tone.” “I am never weird.” “You spent three hours last Tuesday looking up whether penguins could be gay.” “They can be! Was important research.” Ilya sits up, phone clutched in his hand like evidence. “But this is different. This is serious.” Shane wipes his hands on a towel and comes around the kitchen island. He’s barefoot, wearing joggers and one of Ilya’s new Centaurs hoodies that he definitely stole, and Ilya’s heart does something complicated in his chest. It’s been nine years and Shane still makes him feel like he’s seventeen and discovering what want means. “What is it?” Shane asks, softer now, because he can probably see something in Ilya’s face. “Scott Hunter has more fics than us on AO3.” Shane blinks. “What?” “Scott. Hunter.” Ilya enunciates each word with deep offense. “Has more fanfiction than Hollanov.” “Hollanov?” “Is our ship name. Keep up.” Ilya scrolls aggressively through his phone. “Look. Scott Hunter/Kip Grady has one thousand two hundred thirty-seven fics. Ilya Rozanov/Shane Hollander has nine hundred and eighty-three.” Shane stares at him. “You counted?” “AO3 counts for you. Is right there.” Ilya gestures at his screen. “And is bullshit. We are much better love story than Scott and his little smoothie boyfriend.” “His name is Kip, and they’re cute together.” “We are CUTER.” “Ilya-” “No, listen.” Ilya stands up, pacing now, phone still clutched in his hand. “We are generational talents. Best rivalry in hockey right now. Everyone says. The media, they love us. ‘Rozanov versus Hollander, the new Crosby and Ovechkin,’ they say. We have drama. We have passion.” “We have to keep it secret or we’ll destroy our careers and possibly get death threats,” Shane points out. “Details.” Ilya waves this away. “Point is, we are interesting! Scott Hunter is old and boring-” “He’s thirty-one-” “ANCIENT. And he is with normal guy who makes smoothies! Where is intrigue? Where is fire?” Ilya spins to face Shane, eyes bright with the particular intensity that means he’s gotten an idea, and those are always dangerous. “We should have more fics.” Shane crosses his arms, and oh, Ilya knows that posture. That’s Shane’s ‘I’m going to be reasonable and you’re going to hate it’ posture. “We can’t have more fics because people don’t know we’re together. Because we’re not out. Because it’s complicated.” “Maybe is too complicated.” “Ilya-” “Maybe we should make people suspect.” Ilya’s grin is sharp and reckless. “Nothing confirmed. Just … little things. Hints. Enough for people to write about.” “You want to bait fanfic writers into shipping us more?” “I want to beat Scott fucking Hunter, yes.” Shane’s mouth twitches. He’s trying not to smile, which means Ilya is already winning. “You know this is insane, right?” “You love when I am insane.” “I really don’t.” “You love me.” Shane’s face softens, the way it only does when they’re alone like this, when the walls come down and he stops being Shane Hollander, Canadian Golden Boy, and becomes just Shane. Just his. “Yeah,” he says quietly. “I really do.” Ilya closes the distance between them, and reaches down to cup Shane’s face. Ilya is four inches taller, which Shane will deny matters until his dying breath, but right now it means

  18. Ilya couldn’t help it, gently collecting the small girl into his arms as she easily wrapped her arms around his neck. She was so light, lighter than she should be for a five year old, and yet the burden she carried had nearly weighed her down just as easily. Ilya swears he'd carve out a future where she would never shy away from the sunshine, where she would never question or second guess whether she deserves the calm, the warmth, the love that she receives. Their deaths weren't her fault, never was, never would be. "Uncle Ilyushka is here now." Svetlana calls the Hollander-Rosanovs to inform them Andrei and Alexia have been killed. And that Katarina, his niece, has less than a week before she's officially filed in foster care. Nobody wants to grow up in Russia's foster system. And Uncle Ilyushka of all people, would not allow it.

  19. Yuna could not have predicted she’d be sitting beside Ilya Rozanov in the warm breeze of a July evening, tucked behind the rock wall in Shane’s cottage backyard, grass tickling the backs of their legs. He wasn’t what she had expected. Quieter. Every bit as gorgeous as the TV screens sold him to be, and then some—baked into crooked grins and lopsided curls and sun-kissed skin and tilted accent. Beneath it all, a well. Too much, spilling over. She could see why her son fell so hard. In other words: Ilya and Yuna have a conversation when the Hollander family meets for dinner the day after Shane comes out.
