Notes on Deafness:
Shane and his family speak American Sign Language (as is common in Canada). In this story, ASL is treated like any other language—when people who are fluent are speaking it, it will read like any other language. Shane has been deaf since birth, and his English is not perfect (as is common for many Deaf individuals). “English is… is not first language,” the woman said quietly. Her accent was thick, and unmistakably Russian.

“No problem at all; welcome to Canada! Is that your boy?” Yuna asked, gesturing over to the child that had similar hair to Irina, which was poking out from under his helmet. He was taller than Shane, though his little hockey outfit still seemed to still dwarf him. He had a serious look on his face, but his eyes were light as he watched the other boys play. He was tapping his stick on the ice, clearly itching to get into the game.
“Ah, yes,” Irina nodded, taking a few seconds to translate the question, “Ilyusha.” Irina looked over at her son, a small smile on her face. “Is my Ilya.”
Or: Ilya and Irina move to Canada for a fresh start when he is six years old. He meets Shane Hollander at ice hockey practice, and they grow up together (and of course, fall in love).

Shane tries not to be disappointed in the way the whole thing has worked out. Because the thing about Rozanov is that his existence is infuriating. And he is so much fun to play against. Shane had almost liked the thought of having a rival and, had the lottery gone a little differently, he and Rozanov would have been drafted to the same division and really delivered on that possibility. They could have really enjoyed it.
As it stands, one of them is going to the southernmost team in the league, and the other is going all the way up North.
Or-
The draft lottery goes a little differently and suddenly there is no rivalry, no joint CCM campaign, and nothing between Shane and Ilya but a charged encounter in a hotel gym and 4,000 kilometres of distance.
A lot of things are different, and some others are too fated to be ruined by something as immaterial as luck.
