Ilya Rozanov: I knew I was bisexual from a very young age, maybe twelve or so. So, you see, even though you interviewed him first, I was still faster than Hollander. But in Russia, culture has changed a lot even just in my lifetime. [The city of] Moscow banned public expressions by gays and lesbians when I was fifteen. I knew to be quiet.

“So. The plan,” Ilya says eventually. “What should we do? Should you request a trade to Ottawa?”
Shane pulls himself back, just enough so he can meet Ilya’s eyes. He had considered that, on the car ride over. Considered waiving his No-Movement Clause for the Centaurs.
But then, he began to consider waiving it for a different team in a different city. A city that already has a house for them to share.
Ottawa made sense before, when it seemed like the only option for the two of them to be closer together.
But now?
“I could,” Shane says. “Or, I could request a trade to Boston.”
Or: it’s the Spring of 2018. A locker room incident disguised as a prank outs Shane, and his teammates discover his relationship with a rival NHL player— a player that Shane refuses to disclose the identity of.
In the following months, it becomes obvious that Montreal can no longer be a home for Shane.
Boston, however, just might be.

When it happens the puck has just left his stick.
It's a clean hit, but Shane takes it horribly, crumbling on impact and colliding with the boards. While he tries valiantly to keep his head up, he feels himself slide sideways and his last fully coherent thought occurs as his head cracks against both the ice and the bottom edge of the boards.
Immediately, the arena starts to wilt.
“… We just want a future.”
“I have only been in love with one person…”
Shane falls backwards and sinks, the ice turning to water beneath him.
“Holy shit. I love you too…”
“I love you…”
The words—memories?— are swimming amongst him, angled and distorted; they consume him, they’re are all he can process, even as someone else—a medic, maybe?— on the periphery now, says, "Just stay still Hollander."

And the thing is, Ilya has never had to get Shane into a vulnerable state like that to exert that control; no, some sort of merciful God that he hadn't been sure existed since he was a child took pity on him and somehow sent him the most perfect man in the world who seemed to want nothing more than to allow himself to be Ilya's plaything, to be molded into the perfect shape to fit all of his terrible desires. But there's so much allure in it, anyway—the idea of taking that power, taking that control, plucking it from Shane's hands in a much less open way—just because he wanted to. Just because he knew it would feel good. Just because he knew, deep down, that Shane wanted it, too. Shane and Ilya's hospital encounter after the hit from Cliff goes a little differently. Ilya walks away with an invitation to the cottage, and a brand new fantasy about fucking Shane when he's high. Ilya gets what he wants. or: a bit of a love letter to power exchange, the romance of kink, and the beauty of someone matching your freak.
