The woman had her hair tucked under a knit hat, and her eyes were actually kind.

    "You are cold," she said.

"I'm fine," Shane said. His teeth betrayed him with a chatter.

She unwound her scarf from her own neck and wrapped it around his.

Eight-year-old Shane goes to a hockey camp in Moscow, becomes a victim to language barrier, and gets rescued by a woman who gives him her scarf and tells him snow angels are real.

Eighteen years later, Ilya finds out his mother had already met the love of his life.

Shane looks up from his phone and shakes his head as he blushes, “you’re such an asshole.” Ilya says, “Harris asked if beds were made of cardboard.” Ilya gets close to the bed frame and knocks, showing how sturdy it is. “Is not cardboard, very strong. Hard to break.” “Ilya,” Shane says in a tone both reprimanding and chirpy. Or, Ilya takes Harris’s advice and films videos for TikTok while at the Olympic village.

“Have you talked to Scott Hunter?”

    “No—”

“I did. Briefly, after MLH Awards in June.”

    “And… what did he say?”

“Hey,” Scott says, and when Ilya looks up at him he’s watching him with a softer, concerned expression. “Are you okay?”

  10. “I saw you with Rozanov earlier,” he mentions, trying to sound casual. “I was surprised he wasn’t immediately telling you how weak your backhand is.”

Shane grins a little. “Oh, do you also think my backhand is weak, Hayden?”

Well, it’s not the best part of Shane’s hockey skillset, but Hayden assumes that Shane knows this too. “I don’t think there’s anything about the way you play hockey that anyone should consider weak,” he says.

“Thanks, Hayden,” Shane replies genuinely, like he isn’t the best player in the NHL. “Rozanov was fine. We were just catching up.”

Does anyone just catch up with Ilya Rozanov? Is that possible without him chirping you? Hayden has never experienced this.

Hayden is invited to his first All-Stars game in 2017 and he is very excited to go. As he gets to know the All-Stars from the other teams, makes fast friends with Carter Vaughn and even admits that Boston is kind of good, he also accidentally discovers that Shane is in a relationship. With Ilya Rozanov.

In chapter 2, Ilya deals with the consequences of Hayden finding out as he slowly befriends Hayden, though he will of course deny this.

During their annual two weeks at the cottage, Shane and Ilya both fall ill (and claim the other is responsible for it) resulting in two days of coughing and chugging electrolytes while neither of them admit how bad they feel. Even though he attempts to hide it, Yuna can hear her son coughing over the phone and decides to go check on him during his yearly 'silent retreat', entirely unaware that he had company. Or that his company came in the shape of Ilya Rozanov.
    ---
Even with the blinds pulled closed to keep the lights out she could still see Ilya Rozanov in her son’s bed; arms wrapped around him tightly. They looked asleep. Not just napping but deeply unconscious.

Yuna supposed that was the effect of the half empty bottle of Nyquil on the nightstand.

She swallowed harshly, stepping closer to the bed. Her son was tucked against Ilya, face buried against his neck as a source of warmth and comfort. “Shane...” she whispered, shaking him gently. “Shane.”

He didn’t stir, breaths steady as he slept like a rock. Her eyebrows knitted together, gaze shifting to Ilya, who had his jaw resting on top of Shane’s head, one of his hands under his shirt to feel his skin against his palm.

  14. "Okay it says here that we need to try all the major allergens on her before six months. That lessens her chances of being allergic so maybe just maybe she'll not be allergic to everything coming and going." Shane had read up on all this information early on, memorizing it, highlighting and printing Ilya out a copy of it with bullet points. Or the one where Sofia has a peanut allergy.

  15. “It’s okay, Luca,” Hollander told him, voice sounding as unaffected as usual (except for when Ilya ragebaited him, then he would get all squeaky and flushed — it was very cute, not that Luca would ever say that) as he precisely adjusted his sock over his shin pad. “Ilya’s just being a dick. Plenty of guys got posters of their favorite players. I used to have a Scott Hunter one back in the day.”

    “You what.”

  16. “I used to be so mad that she was gone sometimes, but it’s okay. I forgive her. I would forgive her every time.”

Something in Yuna’s eyes fractures, like a bird bone under the sole of a shoe. “Your mother is very lucky, then.”

“Yuna,” Ilya says, and he tries very hard to not look at Shane, to not see the unforgiving, enduring hurt in his eyes when he looks over at his mother, so far away from her that he can’t come home, even though he desperately wants to. He looks at Yuna instead, and somehow, even as he braces against the ice-cold concrete and lets the sound of the whistling wind settle in his ears and has been looking at her for a long time now, he finds himself entirely unprepared for familiar Yuna’s eyes will be when she turns her gaze from the distant streetlamp to him. “You’re very lucky too.”

Shane Hollander is a ghost with a comatose body that won't work, unable to move on because his mom won't come visit him. Ilya Rozanov is the only person who can see and hear him, and against all odds, this is still a love story.

  18. When Ilya throws a punch on the ice after a homophobic remark, Shane hates seeing Ilya hurt. They don’t argue and where Shane’s tears finally stop the fight. The locker room is a pressure cooker, but they don’t crack. Not there. Shane keeps his face carefully neutral while he changes, answers a teammate’s joke with the right tone, the right smile. Ilya can feel him watching anyway. Can feel the heat of it without ever looking up. His knuckles throb, split and swollen, but he keeps his hands busy, tapes them himself, jaw locked. When their eyes meet, Shane gives the smallest nod. You good? Ilya nods back. Later. Later is a long drive home with the radio on low and neither of them speaking. Later is the apartment door clicking shut behind them, the quiet rushing in too fast. Shane drops his bag by the door. “I didn’t like that you fought him.” Ilya exhales through his nose. Here we go. “You weren’t supposed to.” “I saw it,” Shane says. “I heard it. I didn’t like it.” “He crossed a line.” “I know,” Shane replies. “That doesn’t mean you had to break your hand.” Ilya turns, irritation flaring. “It’s hockey.” “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” Ilya snaps. “This happens every night.” “And every night I hate it,” Shane shoots back. “I hate watching you get hurt.” Ilya scoffs. “I’m fine.” “You’re bleeding,” Shane says. “You’re always bleeding.” Ilya bristles. “So what, you want me to just stand there?” “No,” Shane says, frustrated. “I want you to stop acting like violence is the only language you have.” That stings. “I didn’t fight because I don’t know any better,” Ilya says coldly. “I fought because someone said something about you.” “And I didn’t ask you to,” Shane fires back. “I don’t want to be the excuse you use to wreck yourself.” “Don’t do that,” Ilya says. “Don’t make it sound like I regret it.” “I’m not,” Shane says. “I’m saying I don’t like watching you pay the price.” “You don’t get to decide how I play,” Ilya snaps. “I’m not trying to,” Shane says. “I’m telling you how it feels to sit there and watch you throw your body into something that could cost you games, seasons, careers—” “So now I’m irresponsible,” Ilya interrupts. “No,” Shane says. “You’re reckless.” Silence slams down between them. Ilya’s voice drops. “You knew who I was.” “And you knew who I was,” Shane shoots back. “Someone who worries. Someone who loves you enough to be scared.” “That’s not my fault.” “I didn’t say it was,” Shane says. “But it is my reality.” Ilya runs a hand through his hair, pacing now. “You think the league is going to protect you? You think refs give a shit?” “I think you getting suspended doesn’t help me,” Shane snaps. “I think you getting concussed doesn’t help me. I think you bleeding on the ice because someone wanted to get under your skin about me doesn’t help either of us.” “So I should just let them say it,” Ilya says bitterly. “Let them think it’s okay.” “I’m asking you to trust me to handle my own battles,” Shane says. “I don’t need you throwing punches for me like I’m made of glass.” “I’m not protecting you because you’re weak,” Ilya says. “I’m protecting you because I love you.” “And I love you,” Shane fires back, voice breaking just a little, “which is why I don’t want to watch you destroy yourself.” “That’s dramatic,” Ilya snaps. “It was one fight.” “It’s never one fight,” Shane says. “It’s always one more.” “You don’t get to cherry-pick parts of me,” Ilya says. “Hockey is violent. You don’t get me without that.”
